Class: Grade 10 S

Subject: Biology

SBA # 13

Date:

Title: Transport in plants

Aim: To demonstrate the upward movement of water in plant.
Material/Apparatus:

Red dye
2 dicot plant (celery)
2 beakers
1 razor
Water
1 glass slide
1 cover slip
1 microscope
1 ruler
1 petri dish
1 magnifying glass
Method:

1. Gather all materials needed.

2. Wash and clean all apparatus.
3. Wash soil off the fresh celery plant obtained
4. Place the celery onto a petri dish and remove the roots with the aid of the razor
5. Obtain two beakers and labelled them A and B respectively.
6. Fill each beaker with equal amounts of water.
7. Place 3 scoops of dye using a spatula into Beaker A and then leave to dissolve.
8. Place one of the celery plant into beaker A and another into beaker B.
9. Leave the beaker with the celeries to then sit for 24hrs.
10. Observe the external parts of both plants and record your observations in an appropriate
table.
11. Remove both celery plants from each beakers.
12. Measure each and then cut 1cm of the celery from bottom to top continuously using the
razor.
13. Prepare two slides and label them according to the beaker labels.
14. Place each slice that was cut into their respective slide.
15. Observe each slice for the presence of dye and record observation in an appropriate table.

Discussion (To be written as a report (past tense), report must include information relating
to the questions)

1. What does the terms Transport in plants mean?

2. What is the purpose of transport in plants?
3. How does the structure of xylem tissue cause water to move up a celery stalk?
4. Describe the results in plant A. ( how and why dye were able to be present)
5. Describe the results in plant B. ( how and why dye were not able to be present)
6. -Limitations -Sources of error -Precautions

Conclusion

One statement answering your aim. (Summarize what items tested positive for each nutrient)

Reflection

What have you learnt from the experiment? How is this information relevant to you and society?

NB: When writing a lab report you must never refer to yourself. You should not use the
words; I, my, she, he, her, him, the researcher or the experimenter.
