Eating disorders

An eating disorder is a nutrition-related mental illness. There are several

types of eating disorders such as Anorexia, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge eating
disorder. It is reported that 7.9% of the world’s population has suffered from
them and 9% of the American population has dealt with or are currently
dealing with one. Girls are more likely to experience eating disorders than boys,
but unfortunately anyone can struggle with them regardless of their gender.

Anorexia sufferers for example will deprive themselves from all kinds of
food and avoid eating the right quantities to stay healthy and active. They
decrease their daily calorie intake to dangerously low and very critical levels.
They might consume between 500 calories to 1000 calories when the healthy
amount of calories for the average adult is between 2000cal and 2500cal.
People who suffer from anorexia are always obsessed about how much they
eat and they never feel satisfied about their bodies, they always view
themselves as fat or overweight no matter how dangerously skinny and
underweight they might be. There are multiple reasons as to why people and
especially girls might experience anorexic behavioral issues; one of them is the
entertainment industry ( Social media, movies, clips, TV series…) that have
always shown skinny fit girls with “perfect bodies” as the norm or the typical
body that a girl or a woman should have. As a result, they grow up exposed to
this kind of media and compare themselves with these unrealistic standards
which cause them to develop insecurities and low self-confidence. It eventually
leads to an eating disorder as a way to lose weight quickly and unsafely. This
illness can be deadly and seriously life-threatening if left untreated, because
your body and organs can give up from the constant lack of food and nutrients.

On the opposite side, binge eating disorder is the act of eating massive
quantities of food (mostly junk food) in a very short period of time until the
person feels uncomfortably full and unable to breathe well. The reasons as to
why people might have binge eating disorder are different than those of
anorexia. Binge eaters (usually overweight) usually find comfort in food and
consider it like a friend. Especially if they tend to feel lonely or they don’t have
many friends and free time activities. Junk food represents a real addiction for
binge eaters and people in general.

How can we protect our teenagers from developing an eating disorder?

Therapists suggest that we can do that by teaching them to be grateful and
thankful for their healthy bodies. We have to remind them that the pictures of
perfect models they see on social media are often photoshopped and
unrealistic. We should encourage young people to have healthy eating habits
and not follow strict diets that could threaten their physical and mental well-
being. Regular physical activity is also a great way for them to be in good mood
and stay in shape.
