Azhagi's Unique and Superfast Tamil Transliteration Scheme

Font requirement

If the characters in this page are not visible in Tamil, then it means you do not have even
one suitable Unicode Tamil font in your system. To download and install atleast one
FREE Unicode Tamil font, kindly visit freefonts.php.

Consolidated Key-mappings Summary

As explained elsewhere in this page, the summary tables below can only serve as a basic
reference. Otherwise, Azhagi's transliteration scheme is "not rigid". It is flexible, smart and
changes according to certain combinations of letters - thus giving you a superfast Tamil
transliteration experience. Hence, kindly please go through the various other 'Help' topics
mentioned in this page without fail so that you use Azhagi at it's easiest best and increase
your productivity in Tamil computing.

How to type ' '?

n = , nh =

That is very simple. You have to use either 'n' or 'nh'.

ெசா த , 'n' அ ல 'nh' - எ type ெச தா ,' 'வ .ஒ ெசா

இைட ' ' வரேவ மானா , 'nh' type ெச ய ேவ .

To elaborate on the above, as you keep typing continuously, inputting 'n' at the start of

words will always give ' ' only. But, if you move the cursor around and start typing at
some random point of your already-typed text, then 'n' may give ' ' only. In such cases,

you have to use 'nh'. Of course, you can opt to always use 'nh' itself at all times (at the
start or middle of words) so that you always get . It is your choice eventually, based on

your convenience.
Examples: neenga = க, nandri = ந , nhagar = நக , maanhagaram = மாநகர ,

senhnheer = ெச

How to type ' க'?

ngha = க, nkha = க, nKa = க
e.g. payanghaL, nanghu, nankhulam, nanKulam = பய க , ந ,ந ல ,ந ல

The UNIQUE 'x' modifier

Available only in Azhagi++ [aka 'anbe sivam'], AAW [short for Azhagi's Addins for MS
Word] and 'Azhagi' android app, as of 25-Jan-2024

Examples:

lx, rx, nx, llx, rrx, nnx, sx, shx

, , , , , , ,

More examples:

e.g. kaalxai, irxaivan, kanx, ullxam, karrxu, kannxan, sxaagaram, shxivan = காைள,
இைறவ , க ,உ ள ,க ,க ண , ஸாகர , வ

Note: Actually, instead of 'x', you can use backquote character (`) also as the 'x' modifier,

in case you feel that backquote character (`) is more convenient than using 'x'. In order to
use backquote character, you need to specify it under the "ModifierCharacter" tag in the

"xmods-Tamil-Unicode-PhoneticTransliteration.txt" file which you can find in the

"Atma\Indic Direct Typer\Tamil" directory of your Azhagi++ portable folder. So, if you

really wish to use the backquote character (`) as your 'x' modifier, then, replace 'x' with '`'
under the "ModifierCharacter" tag. Apart from the the backquote character (`), you can

use the backslash character (\) too as the 'x' modifier. i.e. you can replace 'x' with '\' too
under the "ModifierCharacter" tag.

Personally, I use 'x' itself since I do not make use of 'x' to type ' '. But, if you are somone

very much availing 'x' to type ' ', then I suggest you use '\' or '`' as your 'x' modifier,
whichever you feel is more convenient to you.

The default list of 'x' modifiers (which can be modified by the user himself, at any time,
by editing the abovesaid "xmods-Tamil-Unicode-PhoneticTransliteration.txt" file) is as

follows:

எx = ஏ x= x=

Convert web pages and HTML files to PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API Printed with Pdfcrowd.com
ஒx = ஓ x= x=

ஈx = ஏ x= x=
ஊx = ஓ x= x=

x= x=
ஏx = எ x= x=
ஓx = ஒ x= x=

x= x=
kex = ேக x= x=

kox = ேகா x= x=
keex = ேக x= x=

koox = ேகா x= x=
x= x=

ேகx = ெக x= x=
ேகாx = ெகா x= x=

x= x=
x= x=

x=
x=

NOTE-1: 'x' modifier is liberally used in the mappings of other Indic languages (Hindi,

Telugu, Malayalam, etc.) in Azhagi+. The same strategy I have used for Tamil also, in
Azhagi++. So, it is not anything new I am introducing. In fact, I have implemented this 'x'

modifier for Tamil transliteration in 2016 itself, but in Azhagi's Android App
(https://azhagi.com/aa.php). You can view Azhagi Android app's Tamil transliteration

scheme's key mappings here - https://www.azhagi.com/aa-tamil-trans-1.php. Therein, I

have written about the 'x' modifiers.

Note-2: The above modifiers setup is not rigid. You can introduce your own modifiers

too. For e.g. you can introduce your new modifier line too. For e.g., "இ` = ஈ" can be your
own new modifier line. In other words, you can have the modifiers in this file in such a

way that it suits you in the bestEST manner. As simple as that.

Note-3: If you place an '#' at the start of a modifier line, that would mean that that

Convert web pages and HTML files to PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API Printed with Pdfcrowd.com
modifier will not be considered. So, there is no need to delete any existing modifier line in

the "xmods-Tamil-Unicode-PhoneticTransliteration.txt" file, in case you are not in favour

of that modifier. Just place an '#' at the start of any such modifier line and that modifier

will not be considered by Azhagi++.

Note-4: There is a great facility in Azhagi++ using which even while typing in Alt+4 mode,
you can still avail the flexibilities of the Alt+3 mode. Rather than me explaining this in

words and you trying to understand it, I suggest you watch the following videos for
getting perfect understanding. If doubts persist, you can always get them cleared quickly

by visiting contacts.php#100percent-free-support

For more useful info like above, please read the "Remarks" section in the 'x' modifiers file

(i.e. "xmods-Tamil-Unicode-PhoneticTransliteration.txt" file).

Important NOTE: The above tables as well as the consolidated table hereunder give you
only a summary. For details on other "as-you-type" (dynamic) flexibilities in the key-
mappings, you SHOULD always refer to the various other 'Help' topics mentioned in this
same page. See sample words below, which will help you understand how flexible the
transliteration scheme is and how easy your transliteration experience will be because of
the same.

Tips - Typing in middle of words

There are 3 ways to type in the middle of words when the ' ' has to be generated
after a 'mey'. i.e. after b, f, g, j, k, l, m, r, v, w, x, y, ch, sh, dh, th, etc.

For e.g. say, you wish to type நர ஹ or கம ஹாச .

1. Type it straightaway as 'narasimhan' or 'kamalhaasan'. For this to work correctly, you

have to ensure that the option "Exclude 'h' in words like Bhairavar" is kept UN-ticked. You
can find this option in Azhagi+ if you click the 'Settings->Preferences' menu item and
then click on 'TAMIL' in the left pane.

2. In case you wish# to keep the abovementioned option always ticked#, then to
generate நர ஹ or கம ஹாச
Either:
type narasimHan or kamalHaasan(i.e. use 'H' to generate ' ')
Or:
type narasimhhan or kamalhhaasan (i.e. type 'h' twice to generate ' ').

(#) please note that if you keep the abovementioned option ticked, you can easily type
names like bhairavar, khushboo, raghu, prabhu, jhaansi, etc. just as you are used to write
them (with the silent 'h' in them) rather than forced to write them as bairavar, kushboo,
ragu, prabu, jaansi, etc.

A recap of the salient key mappings below, so that you can use Azhagi+ at it's EASIEST
best, availing all the FLEXIBLE key mappings:

aum / Aum / OM

.
.
lx, rx, nx, lxx, rxx, nxx, llx, rrx, nnx, sx, shx, sxx (only in AAW (short for Azhagi's Addins for
MS Word) and 'Azhagi' android app)
, , , , , , , , , , , ऽ (avagraha)

e.g. kaalxai, irxaivan, kanx, ulxxam, karxxu, kanxxan, ullxam, karrxu, kannxan, sxaagaram,
shxivan = காைள, இைறவ , க , உ ள , க , க ண , உ ள , க , க ண ,
ஸாகர , வ

Note: The above facility is a unique feature amongst Indic apps, as of now. This facility
allows you to use the 'x' modifier feature of Azhagi and transliterate some oft-used
characters without using the shift key.

As you can notice, there was no need to type Swaami, namaSkaaram, viSwam. i.e. there
was no need to use 'S' (capital 's'). In other words, whenever a mey follows 's' ( ), Azhagi
will automatically convert s ( ) to S ( ).

Consolidated Table

Note: The following** is a screenshot of the table available at mazhalaigal.com/tamil/learn/keys.php

(thanks to the editor of mazhalaigal.com, loving (Late)Sri. A K Rajagopalan sir). This snapshot table
shows you only the "basic" key mappings. But, Azhagi provides alternative keymappings too for very
many letters and to view the same, please visit the abovementioned mazhalaigal link and move the
mouse over each colored Tamil letter.

Convert web pages and HTML files to PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API Printed with Pdfcrowd.com
The display of alternate mappings to display any Tamil letter during "Mouse Hover" over any letter works
in all major browsers - Google Chrome, Firefox, MS Edge. The only thing is that you need to allow the
abovementioned page to load fully (it takes a minute or two sometimes). Perhaps because the page is
getting loaded from 'web.archive' now, it is taking time for the full page to load fully, I think. But, once the
page is loaded fully, the "mouse hover" works perfectly. See some examples of the same below.

Azhagi's Tamil Transliteration Scheme - Modern Style

Tamil can be transliterated using Azhagi, following it's easy, fast and flexible 'English to
Tamil' transliteration scheme/rules (i.e. English-to-Tamil letter/character/key mappings).
As far as Tamil is concerned, Azhagi provides a natural (easier and faster) transliteration
scheme since 2000, making it unique. For more information on this uniqueness, please
see easytam.php, easy.php and docs.php. Since there is no 'rigidity' with regard to Azhagi's
Tamil transliteration scheme, there are lots of HELP topics/links provided from within
Azhagi application itself to help you understand the various intelligent and flexible key
mappings Azhagi offers to make your Tamil transliteration experience ever so easy,
natural, intuitive and fast. The aforesaid HELP topics/links (as well as a tutorial in
mazhalaigal.com on the naturalness and flexibility of Azhagi's transliteration scheme) are
listed below.

Help 1

Click on 'English to Tamil Mappings' button in the main opening screen of Azhagi.
You can click on each item in it to see mappings for vowels, consonants,
vowels+consonants, special cases, intelligent mappings, extended mappings, etc.

Help 2

You can visit mazhalaigal.com/tamil/software/0806akr_azhagi.php hosted by the

You can get to see a consolidated mappings summary of Azhagi (which is given
here in this page too). You can take a print-out of this for your reference. But, as
explained elsewhere in this page, this summary can only serve as a basic reference.
Azhagi's transliteration scheme is otherwise flexible and changes according to
certain combination of letters and hence you have to go through the various other
help topics so that you use Azhagi at it's easiest best and increase your productivity
in Tamil computing.
