Part 3
Read the text below and answer questions 17 – 24.

Frugal living is learning to be smart with your spending. It means knowing what your priorities are. It also
means being sensible with your spending. Spending money on things that you can afford and that brings
joy adds value to your life. One needs to be disciplined to be able to live frugally.
To begin with, one needs to save enough to make choices in life. Saving some money for emergency
use and for unexpected incidents helps to reduce your stress. The easiest way to live frugally is to be mindful
of what you spend on. Before making any purchase, ask yourself if you really need it. Frugal living does not
mean that you cannot go on a shopping spree. If you have the spare cash for the things that you really love,
go for it. The key word is being mindful. Have you paid off your debts? Have you put aside some savings?
How much do you have at the end of the month? These are some questions that you should consider
before you decide to give yourself a treat.
To live frugally, create a budget. Know how much your incoming money is and how much you have to
put aside for other necessities. Keeping track of what you need to spend on helps you to direct your money
to better use.

Part 5
Questions 33 – 40
You are going to read an article on how to deal with friends who do not reply your text messages.
Eight sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A to H) to fill each gap (33 – 40). For
each question, mark the correct answer (A to H) on your answer sheet.

How to Deal with Friends Who Do Not Reply Text Messages

Does it bother you that your friend does not answer your text messages? 33. G Your friend is

probably unable to respond or for some reason do not wish to respond. 34. C

If this happens to you from time to time, it is really nothing to be unduly concerned. 35. A

Over reacting to the unresponsive text messages may cause one to lose a friend. 36. E Do not read

.
too much into their silence and respond with a message that may in the end hurt a relationship. You may

hd
even lose a friend. 37. B

.B
dn
Blame the situation on the social media that has become such a part of our life that it has become
iS
intrusive. 38. H The question is do we have to check our social media for messages and update our
g

lives all the time? 29. D So, if your friend does not respond to your message, send her another text
an

after some time. 40. F

l
Pe
n
ta

A Send him or her another message for your friend could have missed the message.
bi

B So, give your friend time and space.

er

C There is also a possibility that your friend is having problem coping with so many text messages that flood
n

his or her life.

Pe

D Let’s not forget that there is so much more in living our everyday life than in updating our friends on social
media about our whereabouts and the happenings in our life.
E Do not expect your friends to respond to you all the time for they too have their own lives and their
concerns.
F We have to accept that social media is part of our lives but we certainly do not need to be affected by it.
G Unless it is work related and it is a matter you need to deal with urgently, it should not bother you at all.
H Communicating on the social media has become a way of life that people expect others to respond the
way they expect them to.

PART 2
(20 marks)
You should spend about 35 minutes in this part.
You have been asked to talk about a hobby that you have just picked up. In about 70 – 90 words write an essay
on how you learnt the hobby. You may use the notes below to help you.

Name your
hobby. What
motivated you
to take up the
hobby?

.
hd
My Hobby

.B
How do you go
about improving dn How do you go
about it?
iS
the end result?
g
l an

Write your essay.

Pe

Suggested answer:
n

The recent hobby that I have picked up is making video clips. I have such a huge collection of photographs
ta
bi

and that motivated me to take up this new hobby.

er

First, to make video clips I attended online tutorials. Then, I selected the photographs for my video. After that,
n
Pe

I downloaded a few apps to improve my video clips and learnt how to do editing and insert music.
However, picking up a hobby isn’t about how good the end result is. It is the process in which one goes
through. Whatever the outcome, the process is always an enriching experience.
