Solution

Given was the sample job description of a human resource manager.


There are several problems in this description. From what I know
about job descriptions, I have made a list of many problems as I find
in the job description:

Problem 1: Classification cannot be exempt

2. Instead of naming a person, it should mention the designation of


Reporting manager

3. Instead of mentioning :

“Summary/Objective

The human resource manager is responsible for human resources in


the company”

A clear objective like “Human Resource Management and control”


may look more appropriate

4. Functions can be rephrased like we cannot mention planning of


all human resources instead we can write about managing any
issues with human resources

A human resource needs to make plan or his/her reporting manager


or department can make plans. Similarly the departments can make
their own plans as the candidate is human resource manager and
not the manging director.

Also some performance evaluation can be done by department


managers an not the Human Resource manager

Furthermore, personnel policies can be developed by human


resource department and the supervision can be done by human
resource manager. It cannot be expected that the manager is
developing the policies himself or herself

Similarly, the manager cannot be expected to directly develop


affirmative action program; files EEO-1 annually. The candidate can
supervise the development.

5. There are many places where the job description is suggesting as


if the manager has to do record keeping or do direct recruitments or
other ground level work. A jon of human resource manager is to
facilitate, control, manage and monitor the ground level work so
that the work if done by the team as effectively as possible. So the
job of the manager should be to get the things done rather than
doing the work himself or herself.

6. In competencies the Manager cannot be expected to Financial


management, though a bit of it may be necessary bit not complete
financial managent

7. the experience at “Required Education and Experience” is not


clear as it also should mention the degree required or not with 9
years experience

8. the requirement in the field “Additional Eligibility Qualifications

“ is also doubtful eligibility criterion.

9. Similarly in the field Physical Demands “The employee must


occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds” is also not clear as to
why this lift or move would be necessary.

10. The signature requirement mentioned also looks not obligatory


as it is sufficient that about the job reaches the candidates
