Introduction of the NGO’s-:
The National Association for the Blind, India (NAB) was
founded in Mumbai on January 19th, 1952. It stands as a
prominent voluntary organization dedicated to the welfare of the
visually impaired within India. With a presence spanning 22
state branches, 65 district branches, and 11 institutions focused
on blind welfare, NAB holds the distinction of being the largest
organization of its kind in the country.
A central pillar of NAB's mission is to raise awareness in society
regarding the prevention and treatment of blindness. The
association plays a pivotal role in serving the community by
establishing educational, vocational, and employment
opportunities for both children and adults who face incurable
blindness. This noble endeavor is carried out through an
extensive nationwide network.
Additionally, NAB has established Cyber Cafes tailored to the
needs of the blind, and it operates Braille and Talking Centers
to further enhance accessibility and education.
In essence, the National Association for the Blind, India, is a
beacon of hope and empowerment for the visually impaired
community. Its tireless efforts across various domains
underscore its commitment to creating a more inclusive and
compassionate society. Through its multifaceted initiatives and
unwavering dedication, NAB's impact resonates strongly in
enhancing the lives and prospects of those it serves.

NAB's range of activities encompasses several key areas.
These include championing a movement aimed at preventing
and curing blindness, fostering education and vocational
training, providing employment opportunities to visually
impaired children and the elderly.
Requirements of both urban and rural blind have also been
taken up by NAB, keeping in mind, the infrastructure and
financial constraints. The Word "Blind" includes people having
complete loss of sight and very low vision. Legal Blindness is
defined as visual acuity of not greater than 20/200 in the better
eye with best correction or a visual field of less than 20
degrees. Legal Blindness can mean tunnel vision, no central
vision, cloudy or extremely blurred vision, seeing just shadows,
or no vision at all.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES-:
AIM-:
• To provide educational and mental empowerment to visually
challenged people.

• To safeguard the rights of visually challenged people.

• To guide the parents in the prevention of disabilities in

newborn.

• To provide vocational training in field of IT sector to make them

understand advancement in technology.

• To generate awareness program like role of mother in raising

special child, cure of eye alignment.

• To Empower Blind Women we run many projects.

OBJECTIVES-:

We have different innovative projects to support the blind

children like every years exams are conducting and visually
challenged children faced a lot of problems in writing the exam.
Many volunteers are there to write exams for them so our NGO
and initiative to create Volunteer Bank for Readers and Writers.

To promote the knowledge of technology among them our NGO

has set up two Computer training Center in Chandigarh and
Ludhiana. We teach them basic IT training and this training for
blind or partially blind people or EWS people for them to cope
up with the society. It’s free of cost. And we teach them in our
computer labs and from basic to advance.

To empower blind women, we also have many programs which

help them to stand in the outer world and not to confined to
the four walls of house like training in household, Braille
learning and computer education for the literate.

NAB in association with M/s Reliance Industries is running a

nationwide Program of Cornea transplant named “DRISHTI” by
paying the cost of this operation directly to the Hospital for
carrying out free operations for the poor. At present, we are
financing three hospitals in this region i.e P.G.I. Chandigarh,
Govt. Medical Hospital Sector 32 and Sh, Guru Harkishen Eye
Institute, Sohana for providing free Cornea Transplants. So far,
we have financed these 3 institutes for over 250 operations at a
cost of Rs.12, 00,000. These 250 people have got the gift of eye
through this project
Problem Identification and the Cause of the
Problem-:
• Blindness cause lack of knowledge-:
There is lack of knowledge among society regarding the causes
of disabilities in the new born babies. People from EWS won’t
able to provide proper nutrients to the young ones which can
also cause such disabilities. Mostly children from these are
affected with such disabilities. And these disabilities can also be
in children who parents are working as they don’t have proper
time for foetus nourishment.

Diabetes can one of the major reasons for blindness as due to

high level of sugar in patients body can damage retina if not
diagnosed on time. In all these cases problems is lack of
knowledge among people.

• Lack of vocational training-:

We have seen that parents of special children treat them as a
burden and never allow to step outside to outer world. But
their parents should teach them how to adjust in the society
and provide training to them in different fields.

They should teach them braille script so that they can read
stories of people which motivate them and they should also
have at least basic IT training so that they can explore
“INTERNET”. These basic things help children in boosting self-
confidence and can make self-independent.

Parents should also encourage children in para-sports so that

they will understand the power of their bodies and can utilise in
an appropriate way.
Steps taken to achieve the objectives-:
There are number of steps that can take to achieve our objectives-:
• By promoting different sports-:
It is well said if one organ stops working then use other organs
at its best. Our NGO is promoting different kinds of indoor and
outdoor sports for special children so that they can find keen
interest in others domains also. We promote indoor as well as
outdoor sports like chess, cricket.

• By promoting entertainment events-:

Our NGO is promoting different kinds enjoyable events which
helps in boosting the moral support of special children and
promote enthusiasm in them such movie screening for special
children, comic books in braille script and many more.
• Distribution of scholarships-:
Our NGO also financial aids as well as scholarships to Blind
students and also give accessories which help them. This help
them in further studies and purchasing required accessories
and in their operation for eyes.

• By providing information on website-:

Our NGO is providing all information about our NGO on
their website and news and announcement and new
projects are also updated on our website. This help
people for any help and query.
ACTIVITY DONE :-
DAY(1-3): Introduction to NGO and learning some
fundamentals of NVDA Software. Instruction to how to deal
and treat with special children. I am learnt about different
shortcuts for NVDA Software and note them so that it can be
easy to teach them.
DAY (4-24): Work as an assistant with Richa Mam in computer
lab at National Association for the Blind, Karuna Sadan, UT
Red Cross Building, Sector 11B, Chandigarh ,160011. In this
we teach students basic concepts of Computer and introduce
them to the Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) Software. It is a
basically a type of screen reader with advance features such
speaking of character, beeping on wrong words, details of the text
and many more.

I have also learnt different things from Internet so that I can teach
them like sending mails through Gmail, different shortcuts for start
menu and shut down the PC.
DAY(25-30): Work as Sole instructor for the students in the Lab and
my main role is provide them different questions and instruction on
MS Word to students so that they can practise and become fluent
in typing and text formatting ,e.g., give them a paragraph to write
and then change font and style and give a new colour to font or
change all words in small caps or capital.

Students are very sincere as they have completed one month of IT

training and I came to know if your determination and mindset is
hard then nothing can stop you. With that I also teach them how to
send a mail and with this I completed CDP which is of 30 days.
Then on 15th July,2023 I went to Sh. Vinod Chadha Sir, President of
NAB Chandigarh for receiving the accomplishment letter of my
project and he admired me a lot and motivate to do public service
whenever I get a chance.

Sh. Vinod Chadha,

President of National
Association for the Blind,
Chandigarh

Challenges:-

During my project I have faced challenges:-

It’s quite tough to deal with special children and need to treat
them with special attention and care.

• The economic downturn means future aid budgets and

donations are likely to decline

• It is hard that this resource to provide to every corner of

the country.
Effectiveness:-

Our project seems to be a greater role in improving the life

condition of blind children and it seems very effective in
Chandigarh and Ludhiana and in coming future our NGO is
planning to bring up more ideas and project for well fair and well-
being of the society.
Our main aim is to provide this service to everyone who can’t
afford education so this education is not only for special children
but also for economic weaker sections.
Our positivity spreading step was a great step toward eliminating
anxiety and setting up a peaceful environment everywhere.
People have appreciated us to do such a kind work.

Social Problems:-
• The major problem we saw is that they won’t access to all
study material. This makes it tough for special children to
lack of knowledge. Even audiobooks are available but the
major subjects like science and mathematics can’t convert
to audiobooks. This is the major drawback for blind
students which keep them away from the vast pool of
knowledge.

• Navigating around places as they won’t able to see. They

can move in their houses as they know everything but in
commercial places it become quite hard and it can made
easy if we install tactile tiles in commercial places for
visually impaired people. Tactile tiles are colourful tiles on
the pathway which may be of red or yellow which helps to
navigate the way.
Conclusion:-

In the closing I am very thankful to NGO for providing the

opportunity. By participating in it I came to know about different
challenges faced by NGOs and by special children. By
interacting with people, I came to know about challenges they
face in day-to-day life.

NAB is doing very good in its field by providing free vocational

training to such students which can’t afford it. Though NAB is
stopping in just vocational training rather it is spreading its
boundaries in different sectors, i.e., empowering blind women,
students for exam writing and many more are still in progress.

The support and guidance provided by NAB along with its

contributions of volunteers, donors, and supporters, have
solidified the its foundation and enabled its success. It have laid
the groundwork for continued progress in our mission to create
a more inclusive world—one where everyone, regardless of
their abilities, can actively participate and thrive.

Governments which actively welcome NGO involvement and

participation in the development process provide a policy
environment where NGOs are viewed as partners. NGOs play
a critical part in developing society, improving communities, and
promoting citizen participation.

This project made me realize we should thankful to God for

everything we received and contribute our life in some well
society driven deeds and consider everyone equal.
