PROVISION OF PERMANENT
CO2 SNUFFING SYSTEM
FOR ERB WEST FLARE
Introduction
The LP (150mm Ø ) and HP (400mm Ø) flare pipeline shall be tapped in for the proposed CO2
snuffing system.
The respective flare line shall be tapped 45 degree and a latrolet to be in place for the new
CO2 snuffing system line.
The following procedures are for positioning, welding the latrolet onto the existing HP and LP
flare and making hot tap access entry into the line respectively. These procedures are in accor-
dance to the PTS 31.38.60.10 Hot Tapping on Pipelines, Piping and Equipment.
This hot tapping and welding operation procedure will be presented in the following order:
The line shall be depressurized after system shutdown and at no gas content prior to welding
and tapping work. Control isolation valve of the flare shall be at closed position.
Gas test to be carried out to test the oxygen gas level prior to welding and tapping work.
A. Weld Gap
• Fitting body or connecting fitting must be raised off the surface of the pipe or vessel
wall to establish a proper weld gap.
• Normal weld gap is 1.6mm per ANSI B31.1, applicable for carbon steel ASTM A105
pipeline.
B. Welding
• Arc weld should be used, if at all possible for all grades and types to minimize
warp age and distorting because of its localization of concentrated heat and to
prevent misalignment of hot tapping toll when the cut is made.
1. Tack Weld
• Preheat the access fitting to eliminate the possibility of the material cooling to a
temperature below the minimum.
• Temperature crayons or electricity temperature controls are generally used to
determine when the proper heat has been reach.
• Isolate all welding from chills and drafts.
• Center the body on absolute top dead center of pipeline run which it is to be in-
stalled.
• The base joint is tack welded, preferably at four (4) points.

D. Post Welding
• The whole area should then be wrapped with gunny sack and allowed to cool
slowly.
Test the integrity of the finished weld before cutting is started. Testing may be done
hydrostatically.
1. Hot Tapping equipment is coupled with the access fitting body which has been
welded earlier.
2. Open gate valve fully.
3. Check for wall smoothness and alignment of internal diameter of welded spools.
4. Assemble the hole saw chamber onto the hot tapping machine and insert the hot
tapping machine through gate valve and tap spool until the drill bit touches the pipe
surface.
5. Pull out the hole saw with unrestricted shaft to determine the actual length of the
hot tapping machine.
6. Place the gasket on the RF of the gate valve.
7. Mount the hot tapping machine with the shaft totally retracted until the tip of the drill
bit about 0.5 inches to 1 inch from the gate valve shuttle.
8. Insert all stud bolts and nuts, tighten with torque wrench then check the alignment
of hot tapping machine.
9. Slowly turn the handle of hot tapping machine until the drill bit of the saw touches
the pipe surface
10. Start drilling the pipe until the hole saw cut through the pipe wall.
11. Turn the handle of the hot tapping machine reverse to retract the shaft and the hole
saw completely.
12. Close gas valve completely.
13. Bleed the hole saw chamber through the bleed valve if the tapping machine.
14. Dismount the hot tapping machine by removing all stud bolts and nuts.
15. Remove the coupon and clean the saw chamber.
