creative. But, you don’t have to be an artist to be creative.

Contemporaryartisoftenlookedatwithaskepticaleye.Itusestechniquesthatmostpe
oplearen’tquiteusedto,causingthatskepticismtocomeintoplay.It’s
anincrediblefeattocreateapieceofcontemporaryart,especiallyusingthese
techniques.They challenge the mind and offer unique perspectivesin a way that
arthasnever been able to do before.For that reason,they’re some ofthe most valuable
techniquesthatapersoncanexperiencethroughartwork.
Inyourpreviouslesson,youaredoneonthetechniquesandperformance practicesof
Contemporaryartsinyourlocality.
Thismodule will provide you with information and activitiesthat will helpyou
applytheartisticskillsandtechniquestoContemporaryArtsProduction.

Therearethreetechniquesthataremostrelevantincontemporaryarttoday.
1. Minimalism
Minimalism seeks to take away what’s unnecessary and leaving only what’s
essential. This is probablythemostimportantpartofcontemporaryart,as ithas informed
so much ofsociety.

2. FoundObjects
Taking something that people view as useless, and then using it in a unique
way in order to make artwork as one of the most important movements that currently
exist in contemporary artwork. The idea is that things that we often view as junk are
actuallymorevaluablethanwethinkthattheyare.

3. Large-ScaleArt
It is more than just a painting that happens to be oversized. It is larger
thanlifeandmassiveenoughtofillaroom,commandaspaceanddwarfeverythingelse that
comes near it.

ArtisticSkillsandTechniquestoContemporaryArtCreation
1. Graffiti
Thisarewritingordrawingthathavebeenscribbled,scratched,orpainted illicitly
on a wall or other surface, often on a public space. It is also range from simple written
words to elaborate wall paintings.

2. LandArt
Land art is that which is made use from natural materials,that are taken
fromthenaturalworld,builtorcreatedinanoutdoorsetting,andwhichmakessome kind
ofcomment or observation about the environment.

3. Collage
Itisapicturewithpiecesstuckon surface:apicturemadeby sticking
cloth,piecesofpaper,photographs,andotherobjectsontoasurface.Itinclude
magazinesandnewspaperclippings,ribbons,paints,bitsofcoloredorhandmadepapers,po
rtionsofotherartwork or texts,andother foundobjectsgluedtoapieceof paper or canvas

4. Décollage
Insteadofanimagebeingbuiltup,itwilltakeoffsomepartsofexisting
images.Itiscreatedbycutting,tearingawayorotherwiseremovingpiecesofan original
image.

5. Printmaking
Itisanartisticprocessbasedontheprincipleoftransferringimagesfrom
amatrixontoanothersurface,mostoftenpaperorfabric.

6. DigitalArt
Digitalart isanartisticworkorpracticethatusesdigital technologyas part of the
creative or presentation process. Since in 1970s, various names have been
usedtodescribetheprocess,includingcomputerartandmultimediaart.

7. MixedMedia
Invisualart,mixedmediaisanartworkinwhichmorethanonemediumormat
erial hasbeenemployed.Assemblagesandcollagesaretwo commonexamplesof
artusingdifferentmediathatwill make use ofdifferent materialsincluding
cloth,paper,wood and found objects.

Art is a form ofexpression that can be conveyed by people in


severaldifferentways.Paintings,Sculptures,andDrawingsareonlyfewtypesofartthat
havebeenaroundforhundredyears,andthathavebeenconveyingwithhuman
emotions.ContemporaryartstodayproduceArtisticSkillsandTechniquesin ArtCreations.

Doyouknowwhatcollageis?Howmanyofyouhavetriedthis?Whatmaterialsdidyou used?
1. Collage
Collage isthe techniquesofan art production primarily used in the visual arts,
where the artwork ismade from an assemblage ofdifferent forms, thuscreating a
new whole. Collage maysometimesinclude magazinesand newspaper clippings,
ribbons,paints,bitsorhandmadecoloredpapers,portionsofotherartworkortext,
photographs,and other found objects,glued to a piece ofpaper or canvas.

2. Décollage

Inart,itistheoppositeofcollage.ItisaFrenchwordwhichmeans“willtake
off”ortobecome“unglued”ortobecome“unstuck”somepartsofexistingimages. Itisalso
createdbycutting,tearingawayor otherwise removingpiecesofan original image.
Exampleofdecollageincludecut-uptechnique.Similartechniqueisthe
laceratedposter,aposterinwhichonehasbeenplaceoveranotherorothers,and

the top poster or postershave been ripped, revealing to a greater or lesser degreethe
poster or postersunderneath.

3. Graffiti

Itisaformofvisualcommunication,usuallyillegal,involvingtheunauthorized
markingofpublicspacebyanindividualorgroup.Thecommonimageofgraffitiis
astylisticsymbolorphrasespray-paintedonawallbyamemberofastreetgang, some graffiti
isnotgang-related.Itis an antisocial behavior performed in order to
gainattentionorasaformofthrillseeking,butitalsocanbeunderstoodasan expressive art
form.

4. LandArt
Land art isthat which ismade usefrom natural materials:Stones, water,
gravel,fallen treebranches,leaves,feathers,shellsand soil arethemost commonly
used materials,but more unusual itemslike animal bonesor skulls,fur,ice orsnow or
animal tracksmight also be used.

5. DigitalArt
DigitalArtfallsintothreebasiccategories:

A. Digitalpainting

Digital paintingisdonethroughpaintingthatusesbrushesmuchlike traditional


paintingtechniques suchas watercolor,oils, impasto, etc.areapplied usingdigital
toolsbymeansofacomputer,agraphicstabletand stylus,and
softwarelikepainting on a table orcreating artwork digitally on acomputer.

B. Digitalphotography&darkroom

- usingcameras,containingarraysofelectronicphotodetectorstocaptureimagesfocus
edbyalens,asopposedtoanexposureonphotographicfilm.

C. Fractals

Fractals are specialized hand – held glass prism that adds artistic flare toyour
imagesand video.
Fractal Filters are supplementary tools designed to provide photographers(and
videographers)withnewtechniquesthatcan beusedtoshootanytime,
anywhere.

6. Printmaking

A. Woodcut

Theoldestformofprintmaking,woodcutisareliefprocessinwhichknivesand
othertoolsareusedto carveadesigninto thesurfaceofawoodenblock. Theraised
areasthatremainaftertheblockhasbeencutareinkedandprinted,whilethe
recessedareasthatarecutawaydonotretainink,andwillremainblank in thefinal print.

B. Engraving

Engravingisanintaglioprintmakingprocessinwhichlinesarecutintoametal
plateinordertoholdtheink.Inengraving,theplatecanbemadeofcopperorzinc. The
metalplate isfirstpolishedtoremove allscratchesandimperfections fromthe
surfacesothatonlytheintentionallineswillbeprinted.

C. Etching

Etchingisanintaglioprintmakingprocessinwhichlines orareas areincised


usingacidintoametalplateinordertoholdtheink.Inetching,theplatecanbe made
ofiron, copper,or zinc.
To prepare the plate for etching, it is first polished to remove all scratches and
imperfections from the surface. When the surface is completely smooth, it is covered
evenlywithalayerofacid-resistantvarnishorwax,whichiscalledtheground.

D. Lithograph

Lithography is a Planographic printmaking process in which a design is drawn


ontoaflatstone(orpreparedmetalplate,usuallyzincoraluminum)andaffixedby meansofa
chemical reaction.
First,thedesignforthelithographisdrawndirectlyontoapolishedslabof
limestoneusinganoil-basedlithographiccrayonorink.

E. Screenprint

Screenprintingisaprocesswhereinkisforcedthroughameshscreenonto
asurface.Makingcertainareasofthescreenimpervioustoprintinginkcreatesa stencil,which
blocks the printing ink from passing through the screen.Theink that passesthrough
formsthe printed image.

7. MixedMedia

Invisualart,mixedmediaisanartworkinwhichmorethan one mediumor


material hasbeenemployed.Assemblagesandcollagesaretwo commonexamplesof
artusingdifferentmediathatwill make use ofdifferent materialsincluding
cloth,paper,wood and found objects.
