21ST CENTURY LITERATURE FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND THE WORLD


Course Syllabus

Grade Level: G12


General Description: This course aims to engage students in appreciation and critical study of 21st
Century Literature from the Philippines and the World encompassing their various dimensions, genres,
elements, structures, contexts, and traditions
Course Description: Critical study and appreciation of the literature of the region where the school is
located in relation to the literature of the other regions of the country and the world

First Quarter
Content Standards: The learner will be able to understand and appreciate the elements and context
of 21st century Philippine literature from regions.
Performance Standards: The learner will be able to demonstrate understanding and appreciation of
21st Century Philippine literature from the regions through:

1. A written close analysis and critical interpretation of literary text in terms of forms and theme, with
a description of its context derived from research
2. An adaption of a text into other creative forms using multimedia

Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs):

1. Write a close analysis and critical interpretation of literary texts and doing an adaptation of these
require from the learner the ability to identify:
o The geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial
to the contemporary
o Representative texts and authors from each region (e.g. engage in oral history research with
focus on key personalities from the students’ region/province/town
2. Compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and the ones from the earlier
genres/periods citing their elements, structures and traditions.
3. Discuss how different contexts enhance the text’s meaning and enrich the reader’s understanding.

Second Quarter
Content Standards:
The learner will be able to understand and appreciate literary texts in various genres across national
literature and cultures.
Performance Standards:
The learner will be able to demonstrate understanding and appreciation of 21st Century Literature of
the world through:

1. A written close analysis and critical interpretation of literary text in terms of forms and theme, with
a description of its context derived from research
2. An adaption of a text into other creative forms using multimedia

Africa
2. To explain the texts in terms of literary elements, genres, and traditions

4. To appreciate the cultural and aesthetic diversity of literature of the world
5. To compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and their elements, structures,
and traditions from across the globe
6. To distinguish the literary uses of language from the non-literary and understand their use as well
formal features and conventions of literature
7. To explain the relationship of the context with the meaning of the text.
