Bevel Designed by Natalie B.

I was searching for a pattern to use for a skein of Opal Handpaint that had been in my stash for a few
years. I wanted something that wasn’t lacy, but more interesting than plain stockinette or ribbing. I
paged through my 365 Knitting Stitches a Year Calendar, and came upon the “herringbone” pattern on
October 29.

The stitch count necessary resulted in some unsightly pooling of the Opal Handpaint, but I still liked the
pattern. So I switched over to a solid yarn, and it was perfect. The eye-of-partridge heel flap works well
with solid, striped, or handpainted yarns.

Size
Women’s narrow to medium width foot

Sizing Note
The stitch pattern is a repeat of 7 stitches +1. For wider socks, add in extra repeats (7
stitches per repeat) for desired width.

Yarn
Cleckheaton Cocoon (70% merino wool, 30% nylon; 177 yards [162 meters]/50 grams):
Color 0003; 2 balls.
Alternate yarns: Any fingering-weight sock yarn; at least 354 yards (354 yards is enough for
a medium width size 7 or 8 (women's) foot. Wider or longer feet will require more yarn).

Needles
Size US 1 (2.25 mm): set of 5 double-pointed needles

Notions
Stitch marker; tapestry needle.

Gauge
17 sts and 23 rows = 2” [5 cm] in St st.

Abbreviations
The increase used for this pattern is indicated by “inc” and is worked as follows:
Insert needle from back to front through right leg of stitch below. Knit this stitch. Then knit
the stitch above. (For each “inc,” you will have 2 stitches.)

Pattern
Leg
Cast on 72 stitches. Divide stitches onto 4 needles, 18 stitches on each. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.

Note: The join is the beginning of all rounds. It will be located at the back of the leg. Needles are numbered from
the join. The first needle worked is #1, etc. A marker may be placed at the join to indicate the start of a round.

Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 15 rows (1.5” or 4 cm).

Knit one row, decreasing one stitch at end (K 70, K2tog). 71 stitches.
