Topic - Analytical Paragraph

An analytical paragraph is a form of descriptive writing used to explain a


given chart, graph, data, table, etc. It requires analyzing and comparing
the given data, facts and coming up with a conclusion on the given data.

Features -
● It should be brief; around 120-150 words.
● It should be precise and well directed.
● Clear and crisp language should be implemented.
● The entire paragraph should be written using a single tense.
● Personal opinions should not be included in the paragraph.
● Mention figures and quantities appropriately

Analytical Paragraph is divided into three parts-


1. Introduction
2. Body of paragraph
3. Conclusion

Types of Analytical Paragraphs

1. Data Based

In this, some data is presented in the form of a pie chart, a bar graph, line
graph or a table. Students have to analyse the data making comparisons
and drawing conclusions.

2. Problem and Solution Based

Here, a problem is presented and students have to suggest some solution


based on some logic. Their solution must be supported with arguments,
reasons and data.

3. Process Description Based

In this, students have to analyse the information presented in the form of a


flow chart, a diagram, a visual or an info graphic.

4. Information Based

This has some information presented as an input. Students are required to


process and understand the given information and then describe it in the
form of a paragraph.

5. Map Based

In this, a set of two maps is presented as an input with significant


differences in a piece of land or a building plan showing some additions
and alterations. Students have to analyse these changes and summarise
them in the form of a paragraph.

Most important tips to score full marks in the analytical paragraph:

● Analyse the given diagram 2-3 times carefully and understand it properly
before you start writing.
● Keep the sentences crisp and clear.
● The facts of data should be kept the same.
● Organize the content and structure the ideas logically, sequentially,
cohesively
● Use functional language to show comparison, contrast, emphasis,
conclusion etc.
● Avoid grammatical and spelling mistakes.
● Do not repeat the same words in a single line.

Thus, students can easily score full marks in the analytical paragraph writing
questions by keeping in mind the above tips and suggestions.

Format of an Analytical Paragraph

The content of an analytical paragraph should be written in 100-120 words. The
content of the paragraph must include the following parts:

(i) Introduction:

Explain in one or two lines the context or the subject of the given graph.

(ii) Body:

● Explain in detail the figure and trends, making comparisons and


contrasts.
● Explain in detail what the graph is about.
● Use relevant figures, explain trends, make comparisons and contrasts.
● Divide it into sub paragraphs, if required.
● Use appropriate functional language to show trend progression and
comparison

(iii) Conclusion:

Conclude the paragraph giving the overall view or summary of the chart or
graph.

Sample Question with Solutions

1. The given pie chart represents the amount of


money spent by a family on different items in a
month. Write an analytical paragraph using the
information given in the chart.

Answer: The pie chart provides information about the amount of money a
family has spent on different items in a month. On an average, the family has
spent majorly on groceries which is twenty-three percent of the total expenses.
Whereas it has spent 20 percent on education which shows that it’s the second
priority for the family.
The other item on which it has spend the most is clothes and transportation
which levels off 19 and 18 percent respectively. Fifteen per-cent of their
expenses were on other items that might include stationery, cosmetics,
accessories, etc. and the least they had spent was on their rent. The maximum
amount was spent on groceries, education, transportation and clothes.
Overall the data shows that they have not spent much on the unnecessary
items or miscellaneous. After spending on groceries which is of utmost

importance they have spent a significant amount on education. The least
money is spent on miscellaneous items after spending on their rent which is
their liability. Thus, it is evident that 85% of their total amount of money was
spent on their liabilities whereas only 15 percent was spent on other items that
might not be necessary to spend on.

Analytical Paragraph – 2

The given bar graph shows the increasing use of skin care products by men
and women over the period of three months. Write an analytical paragraph
elaborating the given information.

Answer:

The given bar graph shows the usage of skin care products by men and
women over the time of three months. The products used are facewash, toner
and sunscreen.
The bar graph of men shows that the most used product by men is facewash.
In the month of June the face wash was used around 33 times, in July 30 times
and in August 35 times. The toner was used around 27 times in the month of
June, 20 times in July and around 33 times in the month of August. The
sunscreen was used 29 times in the month of June, 25 times in July and 32
times in August.
The bar graph of women shows that the most used product is sunscreen. In
the month of June the face wash was used 25 times, in July 22 times and in
August 24 times The toner was used 22 times in the month of June, in July 25
times and in August 27 times. The Sunscreen being the most used product
was used 34 times in June, 29 times in July and 35 times in August. To
conclude the given information, the usage of facewash by men saw a rise in
the month of August and reached its peak and usage of sunscreen by women
saw its rise in the Month of August too, reaching its peak of 35 times of usage.
