RECOMMENDED Issued 1924-02
PRACTICE Revised 1990-09
1. Scope—This SAE Recommended Practice sets forth recommended back of cab to rear axle (CA) dimensional
data. It applies to 4- and 6-wheel motor trucks but not necessarily to truck-tractors.
1.1 Frame Width—Width of frame shall be measured at any point back of the rear most extremity of the cab and/
or its support.
1.2 Frame Length—The CA dimension (distance from extreme back of cab to centerline of rear axle) of 4-wheel
motor trucks, measured with chassis unloaded, shall be:
a. 39 in (991 mm)
b. 48 in (1219 mm)
c. 60 in (1524 mm)
d. 72 in (1829 mm)
e. 78 in (1981 mm)
f. 84 in (2134 mm)
g. 96 in (2438 mm)
h. 102 in (2591 mm)
i. 108 in (2743 mm)
j. 120 in (3048 mm)
k. 126 in (3200 mm)
l. 138 in (3505 mm)
m. 144 in (3658 mm)
n. 156 in (3962 mm)
Where additional CA dimensions are required for longer wheelbase trucks, the recommended increments shall
be 12 in (305 mm) beyond the last dimension listed (156 in [3962 mm]). The tolerance on the CA dimensions
shall be plus 1 in (25.4 mm) minus 0 to avoid possible interference between the cab and body.
The CA dimension of 6-wheel trucks shall be the same as those for 4-wheel trucks, and shall be measured
from the extreme back of cab to a line midway between the two rear axles, expressed as a hyphenated figure,
the first unit of which shall be the standard CA dimension as defined previously. The second unit shall be the
distance between the two rear axles, and is to be given by the vehicle manufacturer as information only.
Chassis components which project beyond the extreme back of cab shall be identified and shall be
dimensioned from the extreme back of cab with a tolerance of plus 1 in (25.4 mm) minus 0 to avoid possible
interference between the component and body.

Rationale—Not applicable.
Application—The following dimensional data apply to 4- and 6-wheel trucks and do not necessarily apply to
truck-tractors.
