Discipline DIDACTICS OF SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

TOPIC DOMAINS IN THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES: THE LINK BETWEEN ANIMALS AND PLANTS

TITLE :
This lesson will establish the link between the plants and animals in your environment using the
Description of the key points
notion of the food web and the food chain

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE : THE LINK BETWEEN THE PLANT AND THE ANIMAL

WORLD

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to establish the link between animals and plants and
Page… Objective
have the ability to value every living thing by seeking ways to protect the plant and animal world.

PAGE… ELEMENTS OF DOMAIN: Value and Behaviour

HEALTH EDUCATION AND CONTENT: Access to education
WELLBEING: TYPE OF INSERTION: Partial
PSYCHOSOCIAL SKILL: Ability to solve problems and think critically
Question: Which of the following statements accurately distinguishes plants from animals?
A) Plants have chlorophyll and can perform photosynthesis, while animals lack chlorophyll and rely
PAGE… REVISION on other organisms for nutrition. B) Both plants and animals can move freely from one place to
another. C) Plants store food in the form of glycogen, whereas animals store it as starch. D) Animals
release oxygen into the atmosphere during respiration, while plants release carbon dioxide.
Answer: A) Plants have chlorophyll and can perform photosynthesis, while animals lack chlorophyll
and rely on other organisms for nutrition
Mr Ngon looking for a space to cultivate, sets fire on a farm close to GBTTC Douala. The fire
destroyed the school garden and rendered the neighbours goats that were grazing there hungry, as
well destroying the micro-organisms in the soil, rendering the place infertile.

Questions for reflection

Didactic situation
-What is the consequence of the Actions of Mr Ngon on the life of living things.

- Describe the link that the these living things have with respect to the consequences mentioned
above.

- As a student-teachers greatly affected by this, what are the actions that you will put in place to
protect your environment.

Page… Learning activities 1 From the didactic situation above, Mr Ngon is thinking about how to make income through farming
for his family by so doing the new space of land he got he decided to burn down the bush on the
( Modelling) space of land he got by GBTTC Douala. Unaware that these actions will greatly impact living things
with man inclusive.

What then are the consequences of his actions

-The goats are without food, the soil becomes infertile, the crops produced by the student teachers
are all destroyed.

-what is the link between these affected living things?

- They all need each other to survive.

 We note here that all plants and animals need food which provides them energy in order to
survive
 Below is a diagram of a food chain that explains the relationship each living has with each
other, how plants and

animals depend on each other to survive.

To promote sustainable development and to ensure that living things will have their constant supply
of food man needs to protect the living things in his environment. Below are some of the practical
ways in which man can protect his environment:

 Afforestation: that is tree planting around the school environment and in the community at
large.
 Don’t throw dirty and chemical liquid in the water/river. Proper waste disposal reduces
pollution and will improve on the drainage system thereby preventing floods etc

Using the food chain diagram presented during modeling, you are to respond to the following true
or False questions to establish the link between the plants and animals and also on protecting the
environment

1. True or False: A plant is a producer in a food chain.

Page… Learning activities 2 : o Answer: True.
2. True or False: A predator kills other animals to eat.
Guided Practice o Answer: True.
3. True or False: A carnivore eats only meat.
o Answer: True.
4. True or False: An ant is a producer
5. True or False: Choosing reusable items over single-use products is an effective way to
protect the environment
o Answer: True
Page… Recall The relationship between plants and animals is symbiotic (mutualistic) where both parties benefit
from the interaction. Plants and animals are interdependent on each other. Plants are producers. They
take energy from the sun, nutrients from the ground and water to grow and produce their flowers,
seeds and berries. They also release oxygen which all animals including humans, need to survive.
Animals are consumers and they all depend on plants for survival that is, they depend on plants for
food, shelter, protection and to get oxygen and so on. Plants depend on animals for pollination and
they absorb nutrients from decomposed animal bodies to grow.

To promote sustainable development and to ensure that living things will have their constant supply
of food man needs to protect the living things in his environment. You can do that putting into
practice some of the following:

 Consumption of young species should be discouraged.

 Use good farming techniques. Avoid the use of Pesticides.
 Protect endangered species

1) Using not more than four words provide answers to the following questions:
 For living things to survive, the need each other, what is the impact of the following on man. .
a) The goats that had no more food to eat.
Page… Autonomous Practice
b) The student-teachers crops that were being destroyed

c) The soil that was rendered infertile

2) From the list below place a tick √ on the appropriate practical measures that you will put in place
either collectively or individually to protect your school environment and the entire community at
large?

 Afforestation
 Poaching
 Dispose your dirty and chemical liquid in the water/river.
 Consumption of young species should be discouraged.
 Use good farming techniques. Avoid the use of Pesticides.
 Deforestation
 Protect endangered species
FOOD CHAIN AND FOOD WEB
All plants and animals need food which provides them the energy they need to live
Food Web: A food web is an interconnected network of food chains. It is the means by which energy
is transferred through a biological community. It shows how plants and animals are interconnected by
different paths and ways to help them survive
Page… Summary of the lesson A food chain represents feeding relationships within a community that is plants and animals.
What is a food chain.
A food chain is a sequence of organisms
 It describes the order in which organisms depend on each other for food.
 It shows the transfer of energy from one organism to another.
 It includes producers (usually plants), consumers (animals that eat plants or other animals),

and decomposers (organisms that break down dead matter)

Example of a food chain
Protection of the plants and animals’ world.

Consolidation and A cosmetic company was to construct its laboratory for fabrication of their cosmetic products. For
Announcement of the next this reason, they have destroyed many hectares of land in the village of Foto, plantations which has
caused the displacement of the population and the animals. After installation, fishing becomes
impossible because of their waste products that have been thrown into the river of this locality.

-List 4 problems caused by the implantation of this company in the locality of Foto

-What pedagogic advice can the administrators of this company receive from you, the student-teacher
concerning the preservation of the elements of the food chain? Write in your answer in the space
below and click ok after completion
