Pattern Notes:
1. The Crocodile Stitch Hooded Cowl is made up of two Sections: Cowl and Hood sections. Both
sections are worked in Crocodile Stitch. The construction of this design is quite simple and only
requires minor seaming to finish the hood, and attachment of two large buttons needed to close
the cowl section.
2. In short, the ― Crocodile Stitch is formed by a two-row repeat: a row of V-sts followed by a row
of scales (or shells). This is a fairly easy pattern to execute and fast to memorize. The only
novelty about this design is that the scales are crocheted in front of the V-sts with clusters
of front post double crochets (fpdcs) from top to bottom, then from bottom to top, as
opposed to working them on top of the row, like in most shell patterns.
3. The hood was made with Double Knitting (DK) weight yarn. If you prefer working with worsted
weight yarn, you can. However, take in consideration the hood will be slightly larger and bulkier
than the one showcased in pattern pictures.

Finishing Directions:
Joining Top of Hood: With the wrong side of work facing you, fold top edges of Row 60. With long tail

top crocheting sl sts through both sts of folded edge sts, across (see schematics).
Making Button Loops: Holding two strands of yarn together, join yarn to corner st of Row 1 (see
schematics), Ch 9, sl st in top of first dc of Row 4; turn, sc 9 in ch-9 sp. Fasten off – (9 sc). For second
button loop, holding two strands of yarn together, join yarn to first dc of Row 14, Ch 9, sl st in top of
first st of Row 18, turn, sc 9 in ch-9 sp. Fasten off – (9 sc).
Button Placements: On opposite side of button loops, attach first button on 6th V-st (counting from left
to right) of Row 4. Attach second button to 6th V-st of Row 18.
Last row: Join yarn in first st of Row 18 and sc evenly around top edges of cowl (right and left sides)
and hood edge. Fasten off and Weaving all ends.
