English Grammar Masterplan

Lesson 14: Basic Sentence Patterns

Lesson Overview

Subject - Verb - Object: We will look at how we

form this structure, and what are the important
aspects.

Sentence Patterns: What are the common

sentence patterns in English? How do we form
them?
Subject-Verb-Object Structure

What is it?

The Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) structure is a

fundamental grammatical arrangement found in
many languages, including English. It refers to the
sequence of elements within a sentence.
Subject-Verb-Object Structure

Subject

The subject is typically the "doer" of the action or

the entity the sentence is about. It's usually a noun,
pronoun, or noun phrase.
Examples

Noun: "John" is reading a book.

Pronoun: "She" is singing beautifully.

Noun Phrase: "The bright red car" is parked

outside.
Subject-Verb-Object Structure

Verb

The verb indicates the action performed by the

subject or describes a state of being. It's the core of
the sentence.
Examples

Action Verb: She "runs" every morning.

Linking Verb: He "is" a talented musician.

Helping Verb: They "have been" studying for

hours.
Subject-Verb-Object Structure

Object

The object is the recipient or target of the action. It

can be a direct object (the one directly affected by
the action) or an indirect object (the one indirectly
affected or receiving something from the action).
Examples
Direct Object
Noun: She paints "a beautiful portrait."

Pronoun: He loves "her."

Noun Phrase: They are building "a new house."

Examples
Indirect Object
Noun: She gave "her friend" a gift.

Pronoun: He sent "me" a message.

Noun Phrase: They offered "the team captain"

some advice.
