Perth Empathy Scale
Perth Empathy Scale
Instrument Type:
Inventory/Questionnaire
Test Format:
For affective empathy, items ask participants whether an emotion in someone
else causes them to feel the same emotion. For the cognitive empathy items,
the wording “just by seeing or hearing someone, I know if they are feeling [an
emotion]” directs participants to respond on their tendency to infer others’
emotions. Items are rated on a 5-point Likert-type scale, ranging from almost
never (1) to almost always (5), in terms of how often each item statement is
true of them, with higher scores indicating higher levels of empathy.
