INTRODUCTION
• The theory learning by insight is related to the cognitive type of
theory of learning. It was developed by Gestalt psychologists.
• This theory advocates that when a particular situation is being
learnt, it does not help to learn it in parts but it helps to learn it as a
whole.
• Learning is creative activity but not a trail and error method of
activity. Learning means ,‘Reorganization of the perceptual field ’.
Learning is depending upon intelligence of the individuals.
MEANING OF INSIGHT LEARNING

• Learning by insight means sudden grasphing of the solution, a flash

of understanding without any process of trail and error.
• All discoveries and inventions have taken place through insight.
• Of course the discoverer possessed a complete knowledge of the
whole situation in peace-meal.
Wolfgang Kohler(1887-1967)

• Wolfgang kohler was a

psychologist who conducted
experiments in which insight
learning was observed in
animal behaviour.
Kohler’s Experiment
• Wolfgang kohler (1887-1967) was a Gestalt psychologist. In one of his more
famous studies (Kohler 1925) he set up a problem for one of the Chimpanzees.
Sultan the chimp was faced with the problem how to get to a banana that was
placed just before but of him reach outside his cage.
Kohler placed a banana outside of the cage of a hungry Chimpanzee. He gave
the Chimpanzee two sticks to try to retrieve the banana.
The chimpanzee was unsuccessful using both Sticks. He tried to use one stick to
push the other towards the banana.
After seemingly giving up the chimpanzee accidently joined the sticks together
and used the new, longer stick to retrieve the banana.
• This study ‘s demonstration of insight learning has been called into question
because the chimpanzee accidentally joined the sticks together.
Kohler’s Experiment
The results of the experiments are:
• Learning is achieved not by trail and error method but one of the
chimpanzee’s intelligence.
• The whole situation has to be understood and along with the inner
relations involved there in one can solve the problem through the
experience gained
Factors of Insight Learning
• Experience: A child cannot solve the problems of modern mathematics unless he is
well acquainted with its symbolic language.
• Intelligence: More intelligent greater will be his insight.
• Learning Situation: Insight occurs when the learning situation is so arranged that all
the necessary aspects are open to view.
• Initial Efforts: Insightful learning has to pass through the trial & error but this stage
does not last long it should be in the form of an initial effort to open the way for
learning.
• Repetition & generalization: Obtained solution of a problem is implement in another
situation demanding similar type of solution
Educational implications of theory of
insight of learning
• Learning is purposeful & goal oriented.
Motivation to the learner is emphasized.
Acquaint with specific aims & purposes of the learning.
• Emphasis on situation as a whole maxim from whole to parts.
Organization of perceptual fields & learning material as a whole.
Distinction between a psychological & a logical order of presentation.
Problem solving attitude develops.
Encourages reasoning, develops thinking & trains imagination &
creative activity.
Conclusion
• In conclusion, Kohler’s approach highlights the internal cognitive
processes that contribute to problem-solving and learning. This
theory has implications for understanding how individuals
approach and solve complex problems, emphasizing the
importance of cognitive restructuring and insight in the learning
process.
