I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
a) Define the concept of a learning environment;
b) Create a Venn Diagram showing the similarities and differences of traditional classroom and constructivist
classroom; and
c) Show the importance of a teacher in a constructivist learning environment.

Concept:
Technology plays a crucial role in constructivist learning environments, which emphasize active, personalize learning were
students build new understanding based upon their existing knowledge.

III. PROCEDURE

a. Learning Environment – Refers to the whole range of components and activities within which learning occurs.
b. Constructivist - Refers to a philosophical or educational perspective that emphasizes the active role of learners
in constructing their understanding and knowledge of the world.
c. Traditional - Refers to customs, beliefs, practices, or values that have been passed down through generations
within a culture or society.

Before we delve deeper into our discussion, let’s take a


moment to clear our minds with an activity. But first, kindly
read the mechanics.

Mechanics:

1. First, divide the class into (2) groups.

2. Then, give them already cut out papers that form an


image related to our topics.

3. Next, instruct them about what our activity is, which is


to arrange the cut-out papers to form the correct image.

4. The person who correctly and quickly arrange the


image first will be the winner.

5. The completed activity will be displayed in front if the


class.

After completing the activity, what are the concepts that

In picture 1, we noticed that the teacher and students in
the classroom were using a blackboard, chalk, manila
papers, and textbooks, Sir!

While in the picture 2, Sir, it is observed that they are


using modern educational tools like computers,
interactive whiteboards, mobile devices, projectors, and
audiovisual materials.

There are many ways where learning takes place. It is not


only the learning style that defines the way people learn.
Earlier on, you have recognized different various objects
and categorized them into diverse classes. Your
responses will be expanded in more detail as we explore
the role of technology in the Constructivist Learning
Environment. As we move forward with this lesson, our
objective is to accomplish the specified goals.

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

C. Discussion of the Lesson

During our younger years, we seem to connect learning to


take place in a typical classroom where we meet both our
teachers and classmate, and have fun. But as time goes
on, this traditional picture of a teacher, classroom, and the
school is slowly phasing out due to the emergence of
learning paradigms and the influx of technology.

For today’s lesson, we will discuss the impact of


technology in the constructivist learning environment,
differentiate traditional and constructivist classroom, and
the roles of a teacher for today’s education.

First off, let me ask you a question. What do you think is


“learning environment”?
Learning environment refers to the physical locations,
contexts, and cultures in which students learn Sir!
These may include our classrooms, homes, or any
areas where learning can occur.
So learning environment refers to the place or area where
teaching and learning take place in the most effective and
productive manner. It includes not just physical places like
our classrooms, but also virtual spaces like digital
platforms.

Learning environment encompasses the culture of a


school or class, its ethos and characteristics, how
individuals interact and treat one another, as well as the
ways in which teachers may organize an educational
setting to facilitate learning

Based on the figure above, what do you think does it


show? Sir, I have observed that the figure shows the
perspective of a teacher to a learning environment.

Any other observations? Sir, it shows the components as to where the teacher
may have little or full control.

As you have observed, it shows the components as to


where a teacher may have little control such as the
learner’s characteristics and resources, as well as the
component where a teacher may have full control such as
the choice of the content and learning support.

Since you already know the basic concept of a learning


environment, let us now focus on the so called
“constructivist learning environment” and the role of
technology.

First of all, where did the term “constructivist” rooted?


Sir, the term constructivist rooted from the theory of
constructivism developed by Jerome Bruner in 1961.

Who were the prominent theorists that influenced the


theory of constructivism by Jerome Bruner?
The theorists that influenced Bruner with his theory of
constructivism were Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget. Sir.
As you have said, Bruner’s theory of constructivism was
supported by 2 prominent theorists, Lev Vygotsky and
Jean Piaget. The framework supports the beliefs that
learners construct new ideas and concepts based on their
existing knowledge, presented the idea that they could be
active problem solvers capable of exploring more difficult
subjects of instruction.

Therefore, constructivism states that knowledge is


constructed, not transmitted, and that the construction of
knowledge is based on experience.

Now, we will discuss the basic constructivist principles in


order to create and develop a technology supported
constructivist learning environment. We need to
understand and consider each of the following
constructivist learning principles

The first of the basic constructivist principle is “Learning is


an active process”. What does this mean?

constructivist principles and discusses how they
understand each)

It means that to learn, we must participate in the


learning process and not just sit and stay idle.
What are the other basic constructivist principles? How do
you understand each?

Now we will proceed to the comparison between
Traditional Classroom and Constructivist Classroom.

Who can give the comparison between the traditional and


constructivist classroom?
In a traditional classroom, learning takes place through
a structured format where a teacher imparts knowledge
to students who typically sits at desks in a physical
classroom.

Meanwhile in a constructivist classroom, it focuses on


student questions and interest, building on what they
already know and working with others.

Yes, that’s correct.

Since we are through of differentiating the traditional and


constructivist classroom, we will proceed our discussion
about Technology in the constructivist learning
environment.
When we say technology, what comes into your mind?
Technology means computers, gadgets, social media
and any other modern equipment used to improve
learning and everyone’s quality of life.

Yes, and technology nowadays plays an important role in


the learner’s lives and the learning environment.

Learning instruction with the use of technology have the


vital capabilities to support learning. The emergence and
widespread use of social media and other online apps
support the constructivist principle that learning is a social
activity that involves interaction between and among
learners with teachers and others.

What are the unique capabilities and roles played by


technology in the learning process?
(Students will enumerate the unique capabilities and
features played by the use of technology in acquiring
knowledge and skills e.g. online instructional resources
supports collaborative learning, likewise, sophisticated
technology communication tools can capture cognitive
processes in solving problems, etc.)
What are the Teacher’s Role in the Constructivist Learning
Environment?

Teachers with constructivist perspective towards teaching


and learning assume the following roles:

- An expert learner who can guide students into


adopting cognitive strategies such as self- testing,
articulating understanding, asking probing
questions, and reflection;
- An organizer of information around big ideas that
engage the students in developing new insights
and connect them with the previous learning’
- Designer of learner-centered learning activities that
will encourage the students to ask their own
questions, carry out their own experiments, make
their own analogies and come to their own
conclusions; and
- A guide, a coach and a mentor in the process of
constructing knowledge.

Can you give the important roles of a teacher in the


constructivist learning environment?

traditional learning because constructivist learning is
manipulative that offer learners with more experiences
and discover new things by explorations that developed
their cognitive skills
