MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION: DESCRIBING

AND MEASURING MOTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

01
DESCRIBE THE MOTION OF AN OBJECT IN TERMS OF DISTANCE,
DISPLACEMENT, SPEED OR VELOCITY AND ACCELERATION.

02
DIFFERENTIATE QUANTITIES IN TERMS OF MAGNITUDE AND
DIRECTION.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How will understanding of speed, velocity,
acceleration important in understanding
everyday occurrences?
DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT

What are scalar and vector quantities?

Scalar- are quantities that are fully described by a
magnitude (or numerical value) alone.

Vector- are quantities that are fully described by both a

magnitude and a direction.
LET’S EXPLORE AND EXPLAIN!

Quantity Category
a. 5m SCALAR

b. 30 m/sec, East VECTOR

c. 5 mi., North VECTOR

d. 20 degrees Celsius SCALAR

e. 256 byte SCALAR

f. 4000 Calories SCALAR

DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT

Distance- is a scalar quantity that refers to "how

much ground an object has covered" during its motion
Displacement- is a vector quantity that refers to "how
far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall
change in position.
Distance vs. Displacement
DISTANCE DISPLACEMENT
Distance is the length of the path Displacement is the shortest distance
travelled by a body while moving from between the intial position and the final
an initial position to a final position. position of the body.
Distance is a scalar quantity. Displacement is a vector quantity.
Distance is measured always as Displacement can be positive or
positive negative depending on the reference
point
The total distance covered is equal to The net displacement is the vector sum
the algebraic sum of all different of the individual displacements in
directions different directions.
There is always a distance covered Displacement will be zero if the body
whenever there is a motion comes back to its initial position.
What is the distance and the displacement value?
Determine the resulting displacement and the distance traveled by the
skier during these three minutes.
ANSWER:

The skier covers a distance of

(180 m + 140 m + 100 m) = 420 m

and has a
displacement of 140 m, rightward.
SPEED
SPEED

Speed refers to how far an object

Formula: moves in a given time interval

Speed= -gives as an idea how fast an object

distance/ time can cover a distance in a given
amount of time
-Speed is a scalar quantity
Let’s try!

Given: Ian went running at a

Distance:
Time:
distance of 120 m in 30 s.
Average speed: ? What was Ian’s average
speed?
Formula:
Speed= distance/ time

Answer: 4 m/s
VELOCITY
VELOCITY

Velocity: speed with direction

FORMULA:
-It gives us an idea to how
Velocity= fast an object is moving and
displacement/ to which direction.
time -Vector quantity
-It refers to the rate of
change in displacement.
Let’s try!

What is the runner’s average

Given:
Displacement: velocity if his position
Time: changes from 15 m east to 40
Average velocity: ? m east during a three second
Formula: time interval?
velocity=
displacement/ time

Answer: 8.33 m/s, East

ACCELERATION
ACCELERATION

Acceleration: refers to the

FORMULA: rate of change in speed or
velocity of an object.
Acceleration= -It gives us an idea how
change in quick an object speeds up or
velocity/ time slows down.
-when the speed of the
object is changing
Let’s try!

A cars accelerates from rest

Given:
Initial velocity: to 24 m/s in 6 s. What is its
Final velocity: average acceleration?
Average acceleration: ?

Formula:
acceleration= change in
velocity/ time Answer: 4 m/s
LET’S ANSWER!
1. Which runner
won the race?

Ans.: Albert
2. Which runner
stopped for a
rest?

Ans.: Charlie
3. How long was
the stop of Charlie?

Ans.: 5 sec
4. How long did Bob
take to complete
the race?

Ans.: 14 sec
5. Calculate Albert’s
average speed.

Ans.: 8.33 m/s

6. A car moves a distance of 1000 m
with an average speed of 28 m/s.
Calculate the time.

Ans.: 35.7 s
7. A cheetah runs with an average speed
of 32 m/s for 30 seconds. How far did
the cheetah run?

Ans.: 960 m/s

8. A runner races in the 100 meter dash.
It takes her 10 seconds to finish. What
is her average speed?

Ans.: 10 m/s
9. A car accelerates uniformly from
22.5m/s
to 46.1 m/s in 2.47 seconds.
Determine the acceleration of the car.

Ans.: 9.55 m/s2
