The Global Edge School Pre-Board III Question Paper 2023-2024
34. Read the extracts carefully and answer the following questions. 1+1+2=4M
India had a very rich and old tradition of handwritten manuscripts – in Sanskrit, Arabic,
Persian, as well as in various vernacular languages. Manuscripts were copied on palm leaves
or on handmade paper. Pages were sometimes beautifully illustrated. They would be either
pressed wooden covers or sewn together to ensure preservation. Manuscripts continued to be
produced well after the introduction of print, down to the late nineteenth century. Manuscripts,
however, were highly expensive and fragile. They had to be handled carefully, and they could
not be read easily as the script was written in different styles. So manuscripts were not widely
used in everyday life. Even though pre-colonial Bengal had developed an extensive network of
village primary schools, students very often did not read texts. They only learnt to write.
Teachers dictated portions of texts from memory and students wrote them down. Many thus
became literate without ever actually reading any kinds of texts.
35. Read the extracts carefully and answer the following questions. 1+1+2=4M
India stands second as a world producer of sugar but occupies the first place in the production
of gur and khandsari. The raw material used in this industry is bulky, and in haulage its
sucrose content reduces. The mills are located in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra,
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.
Sixty per cent mills are in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This industry is seasonal in nature so, it is
ideally suited to the cooperative sector. In recent years, there is a tendency for the mills to shift
and concentrate in the southern and western states, especially in Maharashtra, This is
because the cane produced here has a higher sucrose content. The cooler climate also
ensures a longer crushing season. Moreover, the cooperatives are more successful in these
states.
36. Read the extracts carefully and answer the following questions. 4M
The organized sector offers job that are the most sought-after. But the employment
opportunities in the organized sector have been expanding very slowly. It is also common to
find many organized sector enterprises in the unorganized sector. They adopt such strategies
to evade taxes and refuse to follow laws that protect labourers. As a result, a large number of
workers are forced to enter the unorganized sector jobs, which pay a very low salary. They ae
often exploited and not paid a fair wage. Their earnings are low and not regular. These jobs
are not secure and have no other benefits. Since the 1990s, it is also common to see a large
number of workers losing their jobs in the organized sector. These workers are forced to take
up jobs in the unorganized sector with low earnings. Hence, besides the need for more work,
there is also a need for protection and support of the workers in the unorganized sector.
36.1. Mention any two examples which do not fall under unorganized sector?
36.2 Give one reason which is not applicable for a worker, who works in the organized sector?
36.3. What are manufacturing units in unorganized sector?
