Have you heard of Nelson Mandela? Mandela, and his political party, the African National
Congress, spent a lifetime fighting against apartheid. Mandela had to spend thirty years in
prison. Finally, democratic elections were held in South Africa in 1994 and Mandela became
the first black President of a new nation.
Have you heard of Mahatma Gandhi? He spent his adult life working for independence from
British rule for the Indian nation. He was a qualified lawyer and travelled to many countries.
He believed in non-violent protest. One day, sadly, he was assassinated by a lone gunman.
