Language learning
1.What languages do you speak?
My mother tongue/ first language is Vietnamese. Besides, I can speak English at a
conversational level. When I speak a language, I feel like I am part of that culture. For
instance, when I speak English, I usually get straight to the point while the Vietnamese
often beat around the bush.
2.Do you think learning languages is important?
Well, I believe learning a language can enrich your life. Not only can it help you connect
with people from different backgrounds, but it can also enhance your job prospects and
give you a competitive edge in a globalized world. Learning a language also provides
cognitive benefits such as improving memory and critical thinking skills.
3.How did you learn the languages that you know?
I think the most effective way to learn a language is to practice more with a native
speaker. By doing this, you can improve both listening and oral skills simultaneously,
you will be fluent in this language. Besides, I also do general readings in my spare time
and keep a journal in English
4.Do you want to become a foreign language teacher in the future? Why?
That thought has crossed my mind once or twice but I’ve never visualized myself as a
full-time teacher. A part-time job, yes. A professional one, not likely. Being a legitimate
teacher in my country requires certain academic degrees and credentials to be able to
convey knowledge and improvise in class. In my case, I’ve never attended any special
training in teaching or have any pedagogical skills; therefore, I don’t have much
confidence in handling difficult situations in class. Besides, you have to reach a high
level of language proficiency to make sure that whatever you say is trustworthy and
credible.
5.Why is there a strong demand for language skills?
The world has become more interconnected than ever and cross-border communication is
not only a demand but also a determining factor in strengthening bonds among countries
and people, economically and politically. Therefore, understanding each other’s, verbally
or nonverbally, is crucial. Furthermore, languages are valuable assets when it comes to
traveling and experiencing. If you are bilingual or multilingual, you can roam around
other parts of the world with great ease and your whole journey will be transformed
miraculously.
6.What is the difference between talking over the phone and face-to-face conversation?
While talking on the phone is more convenient, in-person conversations seem more
efficient and productive in terms of getting the message across. It might be a bit difficult
to convey a full range of emotions when conversing through an electronic device because
words and intonation are the only means. By contrast, with face-to-face communication,
people can use eye contact, facial expression, and body gesture to make sure their verbal
and non-verbal messages are correctly perceived. That’s why misunderstanding is less
likely to happen when people meet and talk in person.
