B.Ed.Spl.Ed. Programme Guide CY 2023 batch onwards

Tamil Nadu Open University is offering the special education programme with the approval
of Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) specialisations of Visual Impairment (VI), Hearing
Impairment (HI) and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) since 2008 with a
maximum intake of 500 students.

As per G.O.(Ms).No.56 Dated 24.04.2012 B.Ed.(Special Education) course be considered as


equivalent to B.Ed.(General Education) course for the purpose of employment in Public
Services.

After completion of the programme a student can enrol in Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)
to get special educator register Number i.e., Continuous Rehabilitation Register (CRR)
Number.

B.Ed.Spl.Ed.Programme: The RCI revises the Norms, Guidelines for B.Ed.Spl.Ed.


programmefrom time to time; to keep parity with the revised curriculum, the TNOU follows
the same. As per the new Norms and Guidelines for B.Ed.Spl.Ed Programme through ODL,
2021.

Course structure:

Theoretical part Practicum part

● 1400 marks. ● 600 marks for Practical Components (PC)


● 19 courses / student & Final Teaching Practicals (FTPS)

Scheme of Evaluation
A. Evaluation System for Theory Courses:
The University will be able to consider a student for granting permission to appear in the Term
End Examination, subject to the condition that an Eligibility Condition Certificate
given by the Programme Coordinator of the Programme Study Centre.

The evaluation process has two segments called Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) and
Term End Examination (TEE) with the marks weightage of 30:70 respectively.
The Scheme of Evaluation of the performance of student-teachers will consist of two main
components:
● Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA)
● Term-End Examination (TEE)

➢ The scheme of evaluation of CIA and TEE for 100 marks is as follows:

Note: the student has to secure a minimum of 45% in Term End Examination; however he/she
has to secure 50% in aggregate (TEE+CIA) to pass the course.

B. Evaluation System for Practical Courses:


The ratio of marks for Internal and External practical examinations is 50:50. The student has
to secure a minimum of 50% marks as aggregate (Internal + External) to get a pass in practical
courses.

During the 1st Semester, after Workshop-1, the Student Teachers are expected to do:

1. Observation at Inclusive School (10 Working Days) – 20 Marks


A. Should observe a total of 20 periods (10 periods for Optional-1 and 10 periods for Optional-2 in any one Inclusive School) and should submit
the filled-in Classroom Observation (Form-A) for 20 periods.
B. Should submit the filled-in School Observation (Form-B).
Marks: Classroom Observation – 10 marks; School Observation – 10 marks

2. Observation at Special School (10 Working Days) – 20 Marks


A. Should observe a total of 20 periods (10 periods for each special Schools – 2 different special schools) and submit the filled-in Classroom
Observation (Form-A) for 20 periods
B. Should submit the filled-in School Observation (Form-B) for 2 special schools.
Marks: Classroom Observation – 10 marks; School Observation – 10 marks
3. Observation at any National Institution for Differently abled (or) Disability Service Clicnic/Centre (or) Early Intervention Centre/
Rehabilitation Centre (or) an NGO for PWDs – 10 Marks
The student teacher can choose any one of the above options, should visit the institute/centre, prepare and submit a Report Form-C.

⮚ During and after the Workshop session, the student is expected to complete Worhop-based and School-based Activities
⮚ Under this part, 100 Marks will be awarded to the Records and Reports prepared by the student teacher on the following Practical components:
A. Seminar Presentation – 10 Marks

D. Practice Teaching – 40 Marks
● Seminar Presentation: The Student teacher has to prepare and present on any academic Topic of B.Ed.Spl.Ed. courses for 10 Marks.
● Microteaching: The student teacher should do the Micro teaching to get trained in certain teaching skills. For the he/she will write the Micro teaching
Records for the Pedagogy of Teaching subjects (Optional Subjects) for 10 Marks.
● School Based Activities: The student teacher during the Practice Teaching at Inclusive school should have to be involved in any four (04) of the School Based
Activities mentioned below. Each activity consisting of 10 Marks
o Addressing the School Assembly
o Assisting in Exam related works
o Maintenance of Registers and Records
o Organising Parent Teachers Association Meeting/ Debate
o Preparation of School Timetable
o Conducting Action Research (compulsory component)
o Organising the Field trip/ Campaign
o Checking the Assistive Devices for the differently abled.
● Practice Teaching: The student teacher has to do teaching practice at Inclusive school for 28 working days. During that time he/she has to prepare Lesson
plans, teach to the students with the help of Teaching Learning Materials, and conduct a Test. The Records pertaining to the Practice Teaching are,

○ Case study - 10 Marks


○ Lesson Planning - 10 Marks
○ Preparation of Teaching Learning Material
○ Scholastic Achievement Test - 10 Marks.
FTPS-21: Final Teaching Practical

The student teacher has to perform his/her teaching competency at Inclusive school in front of Internal and External Examiners during the Final Teaching Practicals
(External Practical Examination). During the FTP, all the Records, Registers and Teaching Learning Materials pertaining to Optional-1 and Optional-2 should be
presented to the External Practical Examiner, and further the student trainee should attend for the viva-voce examination.

⮚ Under this part, 100 Marks will be awarded to the Records and Reports prepared by the student teacher on the following components:

A. Workshop Based Activities:


○ Seminar Presentation: The Student teacher has to prepare and present on any academic Topic of B.Ed.Spl.Ed. 3rd Semester courses for 10 Marks.
○ Model Lesson Plan / IEP: The student teacher has to prepare a model Lesson plan or Individualised Education Plan for 10 Marks

B. School Based Activities: The student teacher during the Practice Teaching at Major disability specialisation school should have to be involved in
any four (04) of the School Based Activities mentioned below. Each activity carries 10 Marks.
o Organising Parent counselling
o Organising the Field trip/ Awareness Campaign
o Record of Assistive Devices for the differently abled at school
o Involving in the process of getting the UDID for children
o Assisting for Daily Living Skills
o Preparation of Sign Language Video for 3 minutes (compulsory component)
o Record on School Accessibility
o School based Record on Transition Plan (compulsory component)

C. Practice Teaching: The student teacher has to do teaching practice at Major disability specialisation (Hearing Impairment) school for 28 working days.
During practice teaching he/she has to prepare Lesson plans, teach the students with the help of Teaching Learning Materials, and assistive devices
under the supervision of a senior special educator. The Records pertaining to the Practice Teaching are,

○ Case study (1) / IEP (1) - 10 Marks

○ Lesson Plan (10 for Optional-1 & 10 for Optional-2) - 10 Marks
○ Teaching Learning Material (Minimum 2 TLMs for each lesson) - 10 Marks
■ Charts, Working/Non-working models etc.

B.Ed. Spl. Ed. Practical in Other Disability Specialisation (apart from their major disability specialization) has the following components:

⮚ PC-04 : School Engagement Activities (Workshop Based, School Based, and Practice Teaching) - Internal Assessment - 50 Marks
⮚ FTP-41 : Final Teaching Practicals at Other Disability Specialisation School - External Practical Examination - 100 Marks

PC- 04 : Practical Components-04 (4th Semester) – Workshop-Based Activities, School-Based Activities, and Practice Teaching

⮚ Under this part, 50 Marks will be awarded to the Records and Reports prepared by the student teacher on the following components:
D. Workshop based Activities – 10 Marks
E. School Based Activities – 20 Marks
F. Practice Teaching – 20 Marks

D. Workshop Based Activities:


○ Seminar Presentation: The Student teacher has to prepare and present on any academic Topic of B.Ed.Spl.Ed. 4th semester courses for 5 Marks.
○ Model Lesson Plan / IEP: The student teacher has to prepare a model Lesson plan or Individualised Education Plan for 5 Marks.

E. School Based Activities: The student teacher during the Practice Teaching at Other disability specialisation school should have to be involved in any
four (04) of the School Based Activities mentioned below. Each activity carries 5 Marks.
o Organising Parent counselling
o Organising the Field trip/ Awareness Campaign
o Record of Assistive Devices for the differently abled at school
o Involving in the process of getting the UDID for children
o Assisting for Daily Living Skills
o Record on School Accessibility
o Assisting the Exam related works
o School based Record on Transition Plan (compulsory component)

F. Practice Teaching: The student teacher has to do teaching practice at other disability specialisation school for 28 working days. During practice teaching
he/she has to prepare Lesson plans, teach the students with the help of Teaching Learning Materials, and assistive devices under the supervision of a
senior special educator. The Records pertaining to the Practice Teaching are,

○ Case study (1) / IEP (1) - 5 Marks


○ Lesson Plan (5 for Optional-1 & 5 for Optional-2) - 5 Marks
○ Teaching Learning Material (Minimum 2 TLMs for each lesson) - 5 Marks
■ Charts, Working/Non-working models etc.
○ Assistive Technology Record - 5 Marks.

FTP-41: Final Teaching Practical (FTP)

The student teacher has to perform his/her teaching competency at Other disability specialization school in front of Internal and External Examiners during the Final
Teaching Practicals (External Practical Examination). During the FTP, all the Records, Registers and Teaching Learning Materials pertaining to Optional-1 and Optional-
2 should be presented to the External Practical Examiner, and further the student trainee should attend for the viva-voce examination.

● Vouchers or log book, Utilisation Certificate on received share for each financial year on the payment/remuneration to the resource
persons for counselling sessions, workshop sessions, assignment evaluation, Teaching practice observation, programme-in-charge and
clerical assistant, supportive expenditure, contingencies, and to the non-teaching staff etc.
