Cleaning Method
Crude Palm Oil is not water soluble and will require the use of a Veg Oil Cleaner, Alkaline Cleaner and/or Multi-Purpose Cleaner to saponify the cargo to bring it into
suspension. Potassium Hydroxide "Caustic Potash" (KOH) is preferred to Sodium Hydroxide "Caustic Soda" (NaOH) as the alkaline cleaner, however if KOH is not available Caustic soda
can be used. KOH or NaOH solutions may be used on their own or may be mixed with Detergent and used in lieu pre-mixed chemicals. Always make sure that there are no visible oil
residues present inside the cargo tanks before the cleaning chemicals are used, otherwise there will be little or no cleaning effect. The use of solvents, Solvent Cleaner or
Hydrocarbon Remover may be required to complete the cleaning process, depending on next cargo. After the cleaning of some vegetable oils and fatty acids the results may
include white powder deposits on the tank surfaces. Recirculation of an acid solution or Rust Remover may be required to remove these deposits, however care should be taken
when using acid solutions in Epoxy tanks as these solutions can damage or reduce the life of the coating.
Cleaning Steps

Description Time Temperature Notes

1:Machine Wash Sea Water 1.5 Hours 50

2:Machine Wash Sea Water 2.0-3.0 Hours 75 Use wash water temp up to maximum allowed for tank coating or by class.

3:Inject or Recirculate Cleaning Chemical 3.0-4.0 Hours Temperature and concentration as per manufacturers recommendations.
Recirculation of low flash (<60C) solvents is not recommended.

4:Machine Wash Sea Water 2.0-3.0 Hours 75

5:Fresh Water Rinse 0.3-0.5 Hours Ensure all tank surfaces are rinsed.

6:Gasfree

7:Eject and Mop Dry

8:Inspect and check wallwash results to determine

if further cleaning is required
Note: The TIME indicated above is based on cleaning to a water white standard in a 1000 m3 tank with fixed tank cleaning machines with complete tank coverage.
