ACMP 251 TITLE: DATABASE ADMINISTRATION FUNDAMENTALS (3.

Course Aim and/or Objective  Understand core Database Administration concepts like, server
configuration and management, database system’s installation, setup and
storage management, relationships, tables, filtering, sorting, and updating
data
 Learn data normalization and all important levels of normalization
Course Description Database Server Architecture: Communication, Data, Administrative and
Application Architectures; Server Security: Login Authentication, Permission
Validation, Database User Accounts and Roles; Database Management
Systems Setup; Database Management Systems Configuration; Creating,
Dropping and Managing a Database, Data Transfer: Transformation Services
and Linked Servers; Full Text Indexing and Web Publishing, Backing up and
Restoring Databases: Backup Types, Backup Devices, Monitoring and
Maintaining a Database Server; Database Replication: Distributed Data,
Replication Types, Physical Replication Models. Transactions and locking;
Security and user management. (Prerequisite: ACMP/COMP 150).
Learning Outcomes This course provides students with the background and tools needed to install
a database software, set up, operate, and manage databases. Upon completion
student will be able to:
 Install, setup and configure a database
 Configure a database server
 Manage database server and resources
 start up and shut down a server and database
 manage database objects
 manage physical and logical storage
 create an operational database
 manage privileges, resources and users
 Manage database storage.

Pre-requisites: Prerequisite: ACMP/COMP 150

General Description of - This course has 60 hrs (30hrs theory and 30hrs practical). It entails
Teaching/Learning Methods simulations.
and Modes of Assessment - Students must do two continuous assessment tests (CATS), a number of
assignment and presentations (if any, not a must). All this should add to
30% of total examination.
- Final examination (end of semester exam) amounts 70% of the total
exams. All add up to 100%.
