Summary:

The paper examines the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) in Oman. It evaluates their strategies and challenges. According to the findings, interviews
with two SME representatives reveal a diverse range of social responsibility activities. These activities include
organizing charity events, partial school scholarships, and supporting women's education. The companies face
challenges such as increased government regulations, limited funding, and limited resources. However,
despite these obstacles, both SMEs emphasize the need for ethical and community engagement. The report
highlights the benefits that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can gain from CSR, such as boosting
consumer loyalty, brand recognition, and competitive advantages. The study concludes by acknowledging the
crucial role of SMEs in the economy and advocating a broader definition of CSR. This emphasizes the need for
specialized techniques to solve problems and promote socially conscious behavior.

Introduction:

Nowadays corporate social responsibility has a significant impact on how consumers and the target
audience view companies (Reckmann, 2023). The concept of corporate social responsibility, or CSR,
holds that companies should conduct their operations by values and guidelines that have a beneficial
effect on the environment and society (McGrath & Jonker, 2023). This report explores the CSR

2
practices, challenges, and impacts of SMEs in Oman through in-depth interviews with two exemplary
companies: Dorat Al Khaleej International Private School and Roshan Jewels. By looking at the CSR
initiatives and experiences of these companies, we try to shed light on the opportunities and
obstacles faced by SMEs in adopting socially responsible practices.

Methodology:

To investigate the landscape of CSR among SMEs in Oman, qualitative research methods were
employed, focusing on in-depth interviews with key stakeholders from Dorat Al Khaleej International
Private School and Roshan Jewels. The companies were selected based on their CSR efforts and
diverse business sectors, providing valuable insights into different approaches to CSR within the SME
context. The interview questions were structured to get detailed information about each company’s
CSR strategies, challenges encountered, impacts on stakeholders, and plans. Key themes and
patterns were identified through the interview transcripts analysis, which provided a comprehensive
understanding of the CSR landscape of the SME sector in Oman.

company A:

Introduction and background:

The first person interviewed was Hadeel, the school’s financial manager, with years of experience in this field.
She mentioned that Dorat Al-Khaleej Private Schools is one of the leading educational schools in the Sultanate
of Oman, with a student population of approximately 1,200 students from kindergarten to grade 12. It has two
branches: Al-Irfan branch and Al Ghubra Branch. Since its establishment in 2003, Dorat Al Khaleej School has
made a history full of many distinguished educational achievements, as it received many trophies and awards
from various educational bodies in different subjects: PE, Arabic, English, Art, Islamic ...etc. The school's
vision is to build the students' self-confidence, reinforce their personality, and graduate creative cohorts to
contribute to the prosperity of their societies. They are committed to providing effective strategic visions, as
they work to meet the student's needs for self-respect, confidence, achievement, and mutual respect only by
meeting the need for a sense of belonging. Recreational, educational, and technological activities are
indispensable in any successful educational facility. Dorat Al-Khaleej School provides all educational,
technological, and recreational programs and activities to its students to promote comprehensive growth.

3
Existing Social Responsibility Initiatives:

Enriching the lives of the community is important to the company, and it sees it as a major responsibility and a
way to give back for its success. The school values community involvement as a responsibility and a way to
repay its achievements. Dorat Al-Khaleej Private Schools consider corporate social responsibility important
because it helps create a positive and social impact and fosters trust with customers, students, parents, teachers,
and all stakeholders (Fusheini & Salia, 2021). Additionally, the school has a formal social responsibility
program focusing on education, community support, and sustainability. They host several charity events
throughout the year, partnering with local SME projects and companies to contribute to local charity
organizations. Their initiatives include spreading awareness about various situations, and collecting charity for
educational purposes toys, stationery, and books, focusing on students' needs in other countries or states. This
approach prioritizes stationery and student-related items due to the awareness that other entities may collect
monetary or food items. Moreover, comprehensive research shows that CSR and a keen sense of employee
purpose led to higher employee engagement, boosting productivity by 17%, profits by 21%, and cutting
absenteeism by 41%. Engaged workers benefit from volunteering opportunities, creating a virtuous loop that
enhances engagement and morale (2023).

The school does not directly contribute revenue to social responsibility projects, but it actively hosts several
charity events throughout the year, benefiting non-profit organizations like the Cancer Association and blood
donation drives. These initiatives have had a positive impact on the community by addressing social issues,
promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting local causes. Through its CSR activities, the school has
not only enhanced its reputation but has also instilled a sense of responsibility and compassion among its
students, preparing them to be responsible global citizens. According to reports, for example: fortune Global
firms devote approximately $20 billion per year to CSR activities, and more than 90% of the world's largest
corporations publish an annual CSR report. One common CSR initiative is donating a portion of a company's
profits to charity. This demonstrates the widespread adoption of CSR practices among leading corporations,
emphasizing the importance of giving back to society and contributing to positive social change (Briscese,
2021).

4
Factors driving the company’s social responsibility initiatives:

Then we would like to explore how the school will engage with local communities and the impact of their social
responsibility programs on society. Volunteering is a key element influencing the emergence of corporate social
responsibility, offering intangible returns on investment. However, measuring the effectiveness of these
programs is feasible and akin to assessing marketing campaigns. This involves a three-part process: firstly,
setting clear goals to establish success benchmarks and quantifiable key performance indicators. Secondly,
calculating value using the impact multiple of money metric gauges social return on investment across six
phases. Lastly, tracking results by collecting data to evaluate if our CSR objectives are being met and to guide
future improvements. Alongside assessing financial ROI and societal impact, it is crucial to consider other
measures of success, such as employee retention. As “Wynn highlighted, gathering feedback from employees
ensures they have a positive experience and feel more connected to their teams and the community.”
(Finkelstein, 2024)

Challenges in Implementing Social Responsibilities:

We asked Hadil Al-Hinai about the difficulties and challenges they face during the planning and
implementation of social responsibilities related to the company, and she pointed out that the regulatory and
legal regulations constitute a great challenge for the company, but they are not considered an obstacle or
difficulty for them because they believe in the need for a percentage of control and authority to ensure the
implementation of social responsibility practices to the fullest and in the right way.

We emphasize what Hadeel said that government regulations and laws are challenging, but it is in the interest of
companies, as studies indicate that Governments have the authority to enact laws that establish minimal
requirements for business conduct, such as environmental and labor laws. Companies may be encouraged to
adopt ethical practices by these regulations, which also guarantee that all businesses are held to a standard of
accountability. Governments can also offer financial incentives to businesses that embrace ethical behavior.
Examples of these include tax exemptions or grants for businesses that invest in green technology or place a
high priority on worker safety (How Do Government Regulations Encourage Responsible Corporate Behavior?
n.d.).

5
Employee Engagement and Social Responsibility:
About the company's involvement in social responsibility initiatives, A's approach entails highlighting the
significance of implementing a social responsibility program and demonstrating to the staff the advantages of
doing so. Employees are inspired and encouraged to contribute more to the company's programs by
demonstrating the advantages of these social responsibility projects and how they will benefit the company.
company A believes that spreading and increasing awareness of social responsibility is very important, and this
is what she focuses on in her organization, as the studies agreed that the first and most important step is to
educate and educate employees about the importance of social responsibilities and the need for their
participation in them. Not everyone will support sustainability objectives right away. In actuality, obtaining
employee engagement through CSR initiatives can be challenging. Because of this, it is critical to inform staff
members about how the objectives will benefit communities or the environment. By incorporating sustainability
into current training, especially onboarding, you can prepare staff members to expect and look forward to
participating in initiatives that advance society (Team, 2019).

Community Involvement:

Next, we want to see how company A engages with the neighborhood and what positive effects their social
responsibility initiatives have on society. Company A engages in community outreach through the school and
makes donations to the Al Rahma Society for Maternal and Childcare, blood banks, and the Omani Cancer
Society, among other local nonprofits. In addition, it provides orphans with a special discount and works to
assist the family if they encounter financial difficulties. To inspire them, twelfth-grade students can also receive
partial scholarships based on their grades. Instead of accepting donations for the Ramadan charity, the school
gathers food items like rice cans, flour, and oil, packages them, and distributes them. New toys, clothing, and
books are also gathered, put in boxes, and given to the kids. Additionally, because the school is closed for two
months during the summer, school property is lent to organizations so that the building can be used as a location
for gathering alms.

Through these actions and social contributions, we see that the school focuses on finding compatibility between
its interests and the interests of the surrounding environment, as social responsibility is an important indicator
for evaluating the contribution of organizations to achieving sustainable development.

Ethical consideration:

6
The fundamental aspect impacting an SME's decision-making process for social responsibility across economic,
social, and environmental dimensions is establishing a balance that optimizes satisfactory results while reducing
negative consequences. Companies evaluate benefits and risks using a variety of methodologies, including
brainstorming, interviews, surveys, SWOT analysis, and benefit mapping. Furthermore, detailed risk assessment
and mitigation measures are prioritized throughout planning to maximize project benefits while minimizing
threats. Transparent communication, the involvement of skilled teams, and agile methodologies promote
flexibility (Mohammed, n.d). In terms of priority, social responsibility takes precedence, with an emphasis on
student well-being and inclusion. Environmental responsibility follows, with a focus on sustainability, and the
economic factor is managed through local community and economic development projects.

Plans for social responsibility:

The enterprise’s upcoming event is Charity Day, which is dedicated to supporting the Oman Cancer
Association, which is an independent, non-profit organization that has been helping the community for 17 years.
They aim to achieve their vision and goals by conducting unique projects, major initiatives, fundraising
activities, and increasing awareness about all forms of cancer. Their principal areas include promoting
awareness, empowering individuals, improving human resource skills, and supporting research activities
( Oman Cancer Association, 2024). The funds raised will go towards aiding their crucial efforts. Scheduled for
after Eid, inshallah, this event holds significance as the Association addresses pressing needs, such as providing
free screenings for women aged forty and above. This initiative-taking measure aims to detect cancer early,
combating delays in screenings due to high demand. Additionally, the Association extends support to non-
Omani patients by covering medication and treatment costs, a vital service considering Omani citizens receive
free treatment in our country.

Collaborations and partnerships:

Collaboration with other organizations is a great approach to supporting SMEs. Working together, businesses
may combine resources and knowledge to offer SMEs the assistance they require to prosper. Collaboration with
other companies can provide a variety of benefits to SMEs. For starters, it allows access to a broader range of
knowledge and resources. For example, a partnership between a business assistance group and a financial
institution may supply SMEs with both business guidance and money. Second, cooperation can assist in
eliminating duplication of effort and ensure that resources are allocated efficiently. Finally, collaborations can
contribute to a more integrated approach to assisting SMEs, with groups working together to give a more

7
comprehensive support package. ( collaborating with partners for greater CSR impact, n.d ). According to the
firm, they partnered with the Oman Cancer Association and the Blood Bank to further their social responsibility
effect.

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs:

The administrator and financial manager of the enterprise would advise to embrace the power of Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) to not only increase your company connections but also to establish significant
links with communities globally. Enhancing your company's CSR will impact sales and employee motivation.
According to the Project ROI study, a well-designed CSR program may raise employee engagement by up to
7.5%, improve staff productivity by 13%, reduce employee turnover by 50%, and increase revenue by up to
20% (Allen,2021). Companies that participate in CSR efforts may move beyond the transactional aspect of
business and promote their organization with a human touch. Remember, in life, what you give is what you get.
So, take advantage of this opportunity to make a positive difference and get benefits in return.

Company B:

Introduction and Background:

Our second interviewer was Samah and Rajwah Al Rawahi, co-founders of Roshan Jewels. Roshan Jewels
stands as a beacon of elegance and ethical craftsmanship in the world of fine jewelry. The boutique specializes
in handcrafted pieces adorned with ethically sourced gemstones. While they do not have a published company
profile at the moment, they prioritize transparency and ethical practices in all aspects of their business. They
mentioned that their passion for jewelry derives from their mother, who taught them the value of being true to
themselves and embracing it. Also, they mentioned that one of their favorite memories of mom is looking for
unusual jewelry items locally or on one of their global journeys. They always wanted to create Roshan in a way
that allowed them to give back from the start. Inspired by their passion for one-of-a-kind pieces and their basic

8
principles, they wanted jewelry to invest in women. That is why they have pledged to give a part of our
revenues to girls' and women's education projects. (Roshan Jewels, n.d.

Existing Social Responsibility Initiatives:

Corporate social responsibility is a fundamental value at Roshan Jewels, as they prioritize making a positive
impact beyond profit. They demonstrate their ethical practices in every aspect of their business operations.
Today's consumers are highly attuned to local, national, and global issues, and these concerns significantly
influence their purchasing decisions. Customers are more inclined to support companies that show genuine
concern and take positive actions on issues that resonate with them. They are even willing to pay a premium for
goods from socially responsible companies, which can boost profit margins (Dublino, 2023). Roshan Jewels
aligns its values with ethical sourcing and sustainability, with a primary focus on supporting women's and girls'
education. Investing in girls’ education has transformative effects on communities, countries, and the world at
large, leading to healthier, more productive lives and contributing to economic stability and reduced inequality.
Additionally, Roshan Jewels support artisan communities and environmental conservation efforts (Girls’
Education, n.d.) Approximately 5% of their revenue before tax is allocated to social responsibility projects in
compliance with the Companies Act, of 2013, which mandates spending a portion of profits on CSR initiatives
(Agarwal, 2023). These endeavors have not only enhanced their brand reputation but have also made a tangible
difference in the communities where they operate. In today's digital age, companies that demonstrate corporate
social responsibility garner exposure and praise for their involvement. Publicizing CSR initiatives through
social media platforms can further enhance brand image and generate positive public sentiment. Consumers feel
proud to support companies that contribute to the betterment of their community, highlighting the importance of
communicating CSR efforts effectively. (Chandra, 2019)

Factors driving the company’s social responsibility initiatives:

The company strongly believes that regulations in many nations and industries, which have been enforced by
the government require businesses to conform and operate in a specific way. In this scenario, however, the
entities affected by the legislation are just complying with certain criteria due to regulation. They may or may
not be willing to integrate social responsibility programs into their day-to-day operations as part of a larger plan.

9
Examples include environmental regulation, pollution, worker use and conditions, product disposal, production
materials, and so on. Also, External pressures such as customer expectations and community needs play a
significant role in shaping corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. As consumers become more
knowledgeable about social and environmental concerns, they are increasingly emphasizing ethical
considerations in their purchasing decisions. This shift in consumer behavior results in heightened expectations
for businesses to operate responsibly and ethically, both in terms of their social impact and environmental
policies. Consequently, companies are compelled to respond to these expectations by implementing more
extensive CSR activities to address social and environmental challenges. For instance, companies like Disney
and KFC have faced criticism for their labor practices and animal welfare standards, respectively, due to
increased consumer awareness and scrutiny. As consumers become more vocal about these issues and demand
greater transparency and accountability from companies, these firms may be pressured to reassess their
practices and improve their CSR performance. This could involve initiatives such as ensuring fair wages and
working conditions for workers in their supply chain or adopting more sustainable sourcing practices for their
products. Thus, external pressures from consumers and communities drive companies to be more initiative-
taking in addressing social and environmental problems through robust CSR initiatives. Overall, the changing
expectations of consumers towards corporate behavior are likely to drive companies to prioritize CSR initiatives
that align with societal values and address pressing social and environmental concerns. Failure to meet these
expectations could result in reputational damage and loss of consumer trust, highlighting the importance for
companies to embrace CSR as a strategic imperative. (Fripp, 2023).

Challenges in Implementing Social Responsibilities:

When a company implements socially responsible practices, one of the main obstacles it faces is ensuring that
initiatives are aligned with the organization's main goals, resource allocation, and financial constraints, and
measuring and reporting their impacts. This is made more difficult by the fact that there are only two employees
in the company. Despite these difficulties, companies can consider a variety of viable strategies to overcome
these barriers and successfully integrate CSR into their daily operations (Beattie, 2024).

We note that there is a difference in the type of difficulties and challenges in both companies, as Company A’s
difficulties were in regulations and laws, while Company B's were in finding compatibility between its
initiatives and goals, as well as in the scarcity of resources and determining the budget.

10
All things considered, putting CSR initiatives into practice can be extremely difficult. However, companies can
overcome these obstacles and continue to operate in an environmentally and socially responsible manner if they
have a clear plan and a dedication to cooperating. Businesses can enhance their operations and positively impact
their communities and the global community by implementing these measures (Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR): A One-stop Guide | Diligent Corporation, n.d.).

Employee Engagement and Social Responsibility:

Due to its small workforce of only two employees, Company B does not prioritize engaging its employees in
social responsibility initiatives. Comparatively speaking, Company A, which employs 230 men and women,
takes a different tack by informing staff members about the value of engaging in social responsibility initiatives
and outlining the implications of such efforts for the organization, its workers, and the community at large.

Community Involvement
Let us take a closer look at Company B's activities and how they interact with and benefit the community next.
In Addition to supporting neighborhood charities and forming partnerships with other craft groups, Company B
takes an active part in community events. As we mentioned, companies A and B make similar kinds of
initiatives and contributions. As we have seen, Companies A and B both place a high value on community
service because they both think that being involved in the community helps businesses establish and preserve
connections with locals and organizations. The company might gain more devoted customers as a result,
strengthening its reputation as a morally and responsibly run business (Garcia-Rocha, 2024).

Ethical consideration:
When we look at how the corporation makes its decisions, we can see that it prioritizes the social causes,
followed by the environmental causes, and the economic ones. This strategy demonstrates a commitment to
addressing today's interrelated concerns. Socially, the corporation may prioritize fair labor practices to ensure
the well-being and empowerment of its employees throughout the supply chain. Environmentally, it may
promote sustainable material procurement, lowering carbon emissions, and limiting ecological damage. Finally,
by taking economic variables into account, the organization seeks long-term survival while also positively
impacting the areas in which it operates, supporting economic growth and stability. ( not sure of this )

11
Future plans for social responsibility:

In the interview, the co-founders of Roshan Jewels stated that they intend to expand their activities, including
educational programs for artisan communities, while also reducing their environmental effects. Companies can
reach this aim by using ethical and sustainable sourcing methods, such as recycling metals and conflict-free
gemstones. Additionally, underlined the need for energy efficiency, recommending investments in energy-
efficient lighting and equipment, as well as researching renewable energy choices such as solar power. Water
conservation surfaced as another major issue, with proposals for incorporating water-saving measures and eco-
friendly cleaning procedures into manufacturing operations. Furthermore, improving transportation routes to
decrease carbon emissions related to shipping raw materials and completed goods was emphasized ( 10 Simple
Ways to Reduce Your Business’s Carbon Footprint, 2023). These initiatives not only lower environmental
footprints but also help to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations to enjoy.

Collaborations and partnerships:

In today's competitive market, firms must devise fresh ways to stand out and attract their intended audience.
One useful strategy is to develop brand alliances and partnerships. Collaboration and partnerships may assist the
jewelry business in a variety of ways. To begin, jewelry firms can get access to new markets by collaborating
with other businesses, such as fashion stores or internet merchants. Second, Complementary knowledge:
Working with other jewelry designers or craftspeople can give access to complementary talents and knowledge,
allowing firms to produce distinctive and modern designs or enhance manufacturing methods. Finally, shared
values and missions. Partnering with groups that share similar values and purposes, such as sustainability or
social responsibility, may boost a jewelry company's brand and credibility among socially concerned consumers
Currell, 2023). As mentioned in the interview, Roshan Jewelries is planning to collaborate with non-profit
organizations, artisan cooperatives, and other businesses to amplify their social responsibility impact.

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs:

12
"Incorporating social responsibility into your small or medium-sized business (SME) is not only a moral
obligation; it is also a wise strategic decision. Begin small, assuring sincerity, and align your activities with your
corporate ethos. Remember that it is not just about charity gestures; it is about creating mutual benefit for
everyone involved. Consider forming collaborations with neighborhood groups or implementing sustainable
practices that align with your brand's identity. By doing so, you not only benefit society but also improve your
company's reputation and long-term profitability.”

Based on the interviews, the following analysis presents the main conclusions, recurring themes, optimal
methodologies, and suggestions:

Key Findings:

Challenges in Implementation:
● Dorat Al Khaleej International Private School encountered difficulties acquiring permits and adjusting to
legal requirements. Roshan Jewels encounter difficulties in balancing corporate objectives, reorganizing
the financial plan, assigning resources, and calculating and disclosing the results of its projects.

Employee Engagement:
● Hadil Al-Hinai aims to engage staff members by highlighting the value of social responsibility and
outlining its advantages for the business, the workforce, and society at large. Although Rajwa and
Samah Al-Rawahi believe it is important to engage in social responsibility work, they do not involve
employees in it because they are the only ones working for the company.

Community Involvement:

● Dorat Al Khaleej International Private School engages in community awareness by donating to the
Oman Cancer Society, blood banks, Al Rahma Maternal and Childcare Society, and other nearby non-
profits. It also helps families in need of financial assistance and provides a special discount for orphans.
Food items like rice tins, flour, and oil are gathered by the school, packaged, and distributed. During the

13
holy month of Ramadan, children are also given new toys, clothes, and books, which are gathered and
packaged. Roshan Jewels collaborates with craft organizations, donates to regional charities, and takes
part in community events actively.

Ethical Considerations:

● Both companies prioritize ethical considerations in CSR. Dorat Al Khaleej Private International School
focuses on economic, social, and environmental factors. Roshan Jewels company ranks social
considerations first, followed by environmental and economic considerations.

Future Plans for CSR:

● Roshan Jewels intends to expand its endeavors to include educational programs for artisan communities,
as well as minimize their environmental footprint. Dorat Al Khaleej Private International School intends
to organize a charity day, with funds going to the Oman Cancer Association.

Collaborations and Partnerships:

● The two companies interact with others to boost their CSR impact. Roshan Jewels collaborated with non-profit
groups, artisan cooperatives, and other enterprises to maximize their social responsibility effect. However, Dorat
Al Khaleej Private International School partnered with the Oman Cancer Association and Blood Bank.

Common Themes:
● Commitment to Society All of these companies see corporate social responsibility (CSR) as an
opportunity to give back to the community and stress its significance.
● Community Impact: both businesses are committed to having a social impact. This is demonstrated by
their support of and donations to different charities, as well as their collaborations with craft
organizations and involvement in neighborhood events.

14
Recommendations:
● Improved planning is advised because both businesses had difficulties organizing and putting CSR into
practice. Streamlined planning procedures can help with resource allocation, budgetary control, legal
compliance, and permit acquisition.
● Communication and Awareness: By stressing the value of corporate social responsibility, as Dorat Al
Khaleej International Private School does, employees' commitment and awareness of the issue can grow.
● Increasing the variety of CSR initiatives: A more all-encompassing effect on the community can be
achieved by investigating new CSR initiatives beyond donating to charities and giving food, toys, and
books to families and children.

conclusion:
In conclusion, this report highlights the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Omani SMEs
using Dorat Al Khaleej International Private School and Roshan Jewels as case studies. Despite the challenges,
both companies demonstrate a strong commitment to CSR through effective initiatives focused on education,
community engagement, and environmental sustainability.

The results highlight the importance of CSR for SMEs to promote positive social change and promote
sustainable growth. Aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged to embrace corporate social responsibility as a
strategic imperative for mutual benefit. By learning from the experiences of these companies, SMEs can
promote a more responsible and inclusive business environment.
