Overview
Use the following procedure to replace either or both of the 25 GbE front-end (Rabbit or Hare) and back-end (fox and Hound)
in an ECS rack. The front end switches are the top two, and the back end switches are the bottom two in the four switch
cluster in EX-Series.
Pre-Site Tasks
Carry out the following presite tasks, which include downloading the firmware files and copying the ECS factory configuration
files.
Steps
1. Download ECS Switch firmware files from Dell EMC Support (ECS Appliance -> Downloads), which is required when
replacing Dell switches operating ECS software versions 3.4.x.x and above. These firmware files are not available by default
in the local ECS Solve desktop repository.
a. Firmware package for ECS release to support 3.4.x.x ,3.5.x.x, and 3.6.x.x.
b. 3.4.x.x ,3.5.x.x, and 3.6.x.x = ecs-os-firmware-dell-3.6.1.2-1590.d5b699f.61.zip = 1.37GB
2. Copy the ECS factory configuration files for the replacement switch to a USB flash drive by performing the following steps:
a. Verify that the flash drive is formatted with MS-DOS or FAT file system.
b. Copy the ECS factory configuration for Dell switches to your USB flash drive.
● Locate the Dell configuration files. These are available in the ECS SolVe generator from one of the following paths:
ECS Tools Folder or C:\ProgramData\EMC\SolVeDesktop\ECS.SOLVE\tools directory.
● Open the ECS_switch_configfiles_vX.X.zip file (where X.X is the latest version).
Tools
This section describes the tools that are required to replace the switch.
Prerequisites
● Service Laptop
● USB Drive to load files to or from
● Serial DB-9 to RJ-45 connector adapter cable. (This cable is provided with every replacement switch.) If the service laptop
does not have a 9-pin connector, you need a USB to serial port adapter
● ESD gloves or ESD wristband
● Philips screwdriver
● Flat headed screwdriver
● Permeate marker and labels
Caveats
This procedure requires the customer to have implemented the 25 GbE front-end switches in a high availability configuration.
If the 10 GbE front-end switches are not configured as high availability, implement the "ECS Rack Shutdown" procedure as
a part of replacing the 25 GbE switches which requires a maintenance window. Estimated time is one hour. See Dell Switch
Firmware Installation.

Avoiding electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage
While replacing or installing the hardware units, you can inadvertently damage the sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment
by touching them. Electrostatic charge that has accumulated in your body discharges through the circuits. If the air in the work
area is dry, running a humidifier in the work area helps decrease the risk of ESD damage. Follow the procedures as mentioned
below to prevent damage to the equipment:
Steps
1. Provide enough room to work on the equipment.
2. Clear the work site of any unnecessary materials or materials that naturally build up electrostatic charge, such as foam
packaging, foam cups, cellophane wrappers, and similar items.
3. Do not remove the replacement or upgrade units from their anti-static packaging until you are ready to install them.
4. Before you begin the service, gather the ESD kit and all other materials that are required.
5. Once you begin the service, avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise, you may build up an electrostatic charge.
6. Use ESD anti-static gloves or an ESD wristband (with strap).
If you are using an ESD wristband with a strap:
● Attach the clip of the ESD wristband to the ESD bracket or bare metal on a cabinet or rack or enclosure.
● Wrap the ESD wristband around your wrist with the metal button against your skin.
● If a tester is available, test the wristband.
7. If an emergency occurs and the ESD kit is not available, follow the procedures in Emergency Procedures (without an ESD
kit).
Steps
1. Locate the ECS rack containing the defective FRU.
Based on the rack PSNT reported in the service request (SR). The rack PSNT serial number is on a black tag in the top area
of the rear of the ECS rack.
2. Identify the switch that needs to be replaced in an EX Series EX300, EX500, or EX3000 rack.
NOTE: The racking is identical for both EX300 and EX500 meaning the switches are in the same U locations on both
systems.

Figure 2. EX3000
Prerequisites
● Access to private network IP addresses (192.168.219.1 to 16 and 192.168.219.101 to 116) are limited to the nodes connected in
the rack backend 1/10/25GbE fox management switch.
● Private.4 (NAN) network IP addresses (169.254.x.x) of all nodes in all racks in the ECS Virtual Data Center (VDC) are
accessible from any node in the ECS VDC once you SSH in to a node using a private IP address (192.168.219.x).
● Access to public network IP addresses for all ECS racks are available once you, SSH to one of the ECS nodes, if security
lockdown is not enabled.
● Two 10/25 GbE Switches Fox and Hound are used for the private network, or Nile Area Network (NAN). For example, node
8 must connect to Hound port 8 and Fox port 8. For more information, see ECS EX Series Hardware Guide.
About this task
If the switch being replaced is the Fox switch, you must use a Serial Connection:
Steps
1. Connect your service laptop to the VDC.

cable.
If you want to connect a service Locate port 36 on the fox switch. The fox switch is the bottom back-end switch in a
laptop to the rear of the rack. dual switch co-figuration. Port 36 has a 1GB SFP that you can connect your service
laptop to with a Cat6 cable.
2. Set the network interface on the laptop to the static address 192.168.219.99, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, with no gateway
required.
3. Verify that the temporary network between the laptop and the rack's private management network is functioning by using
the ping command.
NOTE:
If 192.168.219.1 does not answer, try 192.168.219.2. If neither responds, verify the laptop IP or subnet mask, network
connection, and switch port connection. If the service laptop is connected to Dell's VPN, ping to 192.168.219.x does not
return a response.
Prerequisites
If the Front-End switch (rabbit and hare) is being replaced, verify with the customer if the uplinks to customer network are
configured for each switch and are healthy.
Steps
1. Execute xDoctor RAP025 to verify no node to switch interfaces (Front-End or Back-End) are down.
NOTE: Before running this step, it is recommended to update xDoctor to latest available version.
2. Determine the report archive for the xDoctor session executed in the previous step. admin:~> sudo xdoctor -r |
grep -a1 Latest. For example, Latest Report: xdoctor -r -a 2019-08-14_190658
3. View the latest xDoctor report using the output from the command in previous step. If no errors are reported, continue with
next step. If the errors are on the FE or BE switch pair being updated, the issues should be addressed prior to updating
OS10.
Add the -WC option to display only "Warning and Critical" events.
The following example shows a clean report with no events.
The following example shows a report with an error on Node 3, slave-0 = Front-End rabbit switch network connection down.
If the firmware was being updated on hare, this would cause a loss of access to node 3 through public interfaces.
The following example shows a report with an error on Node 4, pslave-1 = Back-End hound switch network connection
down. If the firmware was being updated on fox, this would cause a loss of access to node 4 through private interfaces.
Prerequisites
If either the switch that is being replaced has failed, or there is no previous xDoctor backup, ensure to get the latest
configuration file from the customer since you cannot access the switch to pull the configuration file.
Steps
1. Check if there is a recent xDoctor backup. Run:
The switch config can be loaded from plain text or xml.
admin@provo-diamond:~> cd /var/log/hardware
admin@provo-diamond:/var/log/hardware> ls -l

2. On the replacement switch, install the optical SFP module in the port with the same number as the port from which you
removed it (as shown in the figure).
a. On the SFP module, push the spring release latch up.
b. Align the replacement SFP module with the switch port.
c. Slide the SFP module into the switch port until it is securely connected.
Transfer Rails
Transfer the inner rails from the faulted switch to the replacement switch.
11
Steps
1. Unscrew the four screws attaching each inner rail to the faulted switch.
2. Attach the inner switch rails to the S5148F-ON switch. Line up the rail with the mounting heads and attach the rail to the
switch. Slide the rail back until it locks into place. The following figure shows the detail of the front standoff with the locking
tab.
Steps
1. After installing both switch rails, line them up on the previously mounted ReadyRails and slide the switch in until it is flush
with front of rack. To keep the switch from inadvertently sliding out of the rack and falling, about 3 inches before you fully
insert your switch, the rail locking feature engages.
12
Figure 9. Installing the Switch Assembly in the Rack
2. Tighten the two thumbscrews and rack screws (as shown in the figure).
3. Connect the AC power cables to the switch and power it on.
NOTE: DO NOT CONNECT ANY OTHER CABLES BESIDE.
4. Firmly tighten the two small screws that you previously installed on front of each rail.
5. Before proceeding, if the new switch has an operating system installed, run the "show version" to determine which version
of OS10 is running.
Prerequisites
Ensure that you have the following materials and carry out the following tasks before you start the switch upgrade:
● Service Laptop onsite.
● Serial DB–9 to RJ–45 connector adapter cable. Dell EMC provides this cable with every replacement switch. If the service
laptop has no 9-pin connector, you will need a USB to serial port adapter. (onsite for troubleshooting - Optional)
● PuTTY and SCP tools installed on your service laptop. This software allows you to establish SSH terminal sessions and copy
firmware files from laptop to ECS nodes.
13
● Determine the default service login user/password on nodes and switches. The ECS Service User Access document provides
for more information on default service login passwords. If the CLI user or password is changed from the default, contact
the administrator for details.
● We recommend that you check the x.509v2 certification status of the pair switch to validate if it is either patched or running
10.4.3.6C1 code that contains the latest x.509v3 certificate. See ecs-ex-series-dell-os10-switch-certificate-renewal for more
details.

Install Cables
This section provides the steps to install cables.
Steps
1. Cable up the switch using the labels, making sure that each cable is inserted into the correct port.
Dell EMC offers an optional HA pair of front-end 25 GbE S5148F switches for customer network connection to the rack with
two 100 GbE virtual link trunking (VLT) cables per HA pair. These switches are referred to as the Hare (FE2) and Rabbit
(FE1) switches. Customers can use their own front-end switch pair (10/25 GbE for EX300 and 25 GbE for EX500 and
EX3000) through the Dell EMC Request for Product Qualification (RPQ) process. In this case, the customer must provide
the appropriate VLT cables, SFPs, or external connection cables.

Dell EMC provides two 25 GbE S5148F back-end switches (BE1 and BE2) with two 100 GbE VLT cables. These switches are
referred to as the Hound (BE2) and Fox (BE1) switches. In the following diagram, all labeled ports relate to an ECS virtual
data center (VDC) in which all racks or nodes are EX-Series (Gen3 hardware), except for ports 39 and 40. Ports 39 and 40
are only used in the scenario where there is Gen2 hardware series integration with EX-Series hardware in the VDC. When
Gen2 hardware is mixed with EX-Series hardware, ports 39 and 40 are the only ports that are used for connectivity. All
iDRAC cables from nodes and all front-end switch management cable connections route to the Fox (BE1) switch.

The front-end switch management ports connect to back-end switch ports through two CAT6 cable and two 1GBaseT SFP.
These two cables and two SFP are used for Dell EMC switches. If you are deploying in a third-party rack with customer
switches, or using customer switches in a Dell EMC rack, these two cables and two SFP are not required. The connections
between the front-end switch ports and back-end switch ports are as follows:
● Hare (FE2) to Fox (BE1)
● l Rabbit (FE1) to Fox (BE1)
The connections are shown with green lines in the following diagram:

Appendix B: Manual ONIE Install (If rack switches are at
10.4.3.6 or 10.4.3.6C1)
If the other switches on the system are currently at 10.3.2, disregard this procedure.
Prerequisites
This method should be used only when a replacement switch has an OS10 version of 10.4 or higher, and all other options are not
available, and switches have to be reinstalled fresh.
● Service Laptop (onsite)
● Serial DB–9 to RJ–45 connector adapter cable (This cable is provided with every replacement switch.) If the service laptop
has no 9-pin connector, you will need a USB to serial port adapter. (onsite for troubleshooting - Optional)
● PuTTY and SCP tools installed on your service laptop. This software allows you to establish SSH terminal sessions and copy
firmware files from laptop to ECS nodes.
● Determine the service login user/password (default) on nodes and switches required engagement. See the ECS Service User
Access document for more information. If the CLI user or password is changed from the default, contact the customer for
details.
● 10.3.2 or 10.4.3.6/10.4.3.6C1 switch config file:
○ Default: Tools -> ECS_switch_configfiles_vx, x.zip file in ECS Solve Desktop or online https://solveonline.emc.com/
solve/home/15 version.
Or
○ Backed Up: Configuration .xml files provided by customer.
● Ensure to use the v1.0 config for the appropriate switches for 10.3.2 version, and v2.0 config for 10.4.3.6/10.4.3.6C1 version.
● Dell Networking OS10 10.3.2 OR 10.4.3.6/10.4.3.6C1 binary. Available on solve in the EX-Series-Switch-OS10-images.zip
bundle.
Steps
1. Using the service laptop, format the USB partition to FAT/FAT32.
2. Copy the required PKGS_OS10-Enterprise-10.x.x.x.x-installer-x86_64.bin file, switch default, or customer provided .xml file
for target switch and .file to the USB.
NOTE: This is the bin file within the directory.
3. Connect service laptop to serial connection of the switch. Create PuTTy serial connection with the following settings:
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Baud rate: 115200
Hardware flow control: none
6. Reboot system. During switch reboot, select ONIE from the Grub Menu, then select ONIE: Install operating system.
24
Figure 15. Grub Menu
7. Stop the ONIE discovery process if the device boots to ONIE: Install.
$ onie-discovery-stop
8. Insert USB into target switch USB port on the rear of the switch.
9. Create a USB mount location on the system.
$ mkdir /mnt/media
10. Mount the USB media plugged in the USB port on the device.
11. Install the software from the USB, where /mnt/media specifies the path where the USB partition is mounted.
$ onie-nos-install /mnt/media/PKGS_OS10-Enterprise-10.x.x.x.x-installer-x86_64.bin
12. Once the switch has booted back into OS10. Log in with the default OS10 switch credentials (admin/admin).
13. Copy the default template .xml file to replace the default config://startup.xml file.
