Subject: Electronic Navigation Aids Exercise number: 9

Surname and Name: Dmytro Baranov Group: L01 Date of exercise: 01.07.2024
Purpose of the exercises:
The purpose of the exercise is the practical use of the GPS GPS Compass KGC1 GPS receiver,
manufactured by Koden, including the navigational function to determine the course, position,
and assessment of its accuracy on the basis of statistical analysis and error theory.

Description of the measurement system

The GPS Compass KGC-1 is a 9-channel receiver that uses two antennas for
receiving a signal. The receiver has two ports that enable cooperation with other
devices through the NMEA 0183 protocol. In addition, the first port also supports
the KODEN format, which allows data exchange with another receiver and
cooperation with a computer.

Formulas to make calculations:

Standard deviation (and mean square error) formula:

=STDEV(number1,number2,...)
Average deviation formula: =AVEDEV(number1,number2,...)
Formula of average: =AVERAGE(number1,[number2],...)
Range of angle change (confidence interval) formula:
= CONFIDENCE(alpha,standard_deviation,size) ,
where the confidence level equals the sample size 100 · (1 - α)% and size is same
Converting φ into minutes: = (value - 5300) + 53*60
Converting λ into minutes: = (value -1 400) + 14*60
Circular error formula: =SQRT(STDEV” φ”^2 + STDEV” λ”^2)
Calculations from Excel:

$GPHDT sheet :
● Average: = AVERAGE (A:A) = 59,92563 [°]
● Standard deviation: =STDEV (A:A) = 3,173553
● Range of angle change at 95% confidence level:
1. 100 · (1 − α)% = 95%
1 − α = 0.95
α = 0.05
2. Sample size = 301
3. Standard deviation as calculated earlier
=CONFIDENCE(0,05;C2;320) = 0,347711

$GPGGA sheet :
 Average φ: = AVERAGE (B2:B53) = 3205.745 [min]

 Average λ: = AVERAGE (D2:D53) = 873.816 [min]

 Average deviation φ: = AVEDEV (B2:B53) = 2,27 e-12

 Average deviation λ: = AVEDEV (D2:D53) = 5,68 e-13

 Mean square error φ: = STDEVA (B2:B53) = 2,3 e-13

 Mean square error λ: = STDEVA (D2:D53) = 5,74 e-13

 Circular error: = SQRT(STDEVA(B2:B53)^2+STDEVA(D2:D53)^2) =

2,37 e-12
Conclusions
During this exercise, I had the chance to work extensively with the Compass
GPS receiver. I used its navigational functions to determine course and position,
and assessed its accuracy through statistical analysis and error theory. All
necessary calculations were conducted in Microsoft Excel, with each performed
on separate sheets as required.

Using the GPS receiver in a practical setting greatly enhanced my

understanding of its functions and limitations. The statistical analysis allowed
me to evaluate the precision of the navigational data. This hands-on experience
reinforced theoretical concepts and provided valuable insights into the practical
aspects of GPS navigation and data accuracy assessment.

Additionally, working with real-world GPS data gave me a deeper appreciation

for the complexities of navigational technology. By examining errors and
applying error theory, I learned how to mitigate inaccuracies and improve the
reliability of the positional information from the GPS receiver. This exercise
bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application,
underscoring the importance of accuracy and precision in navigation.
