Oracle Data Science Cloud FAQ

What has Oracle announced for data science and machine learning
development?

Oracle has announced a new platform aimed at the data science and machine learning
development lifecycle called the Oracle Data Science Cloud. The platform enables data
science teams to organize their work, easily access data and computing resources, and
build, train, deploy, and manage models on the Oracle Cloud.

What is the goal of this new data science platform offering?

The goal of the platform is to make enterprise data science teams more productive. The
platform enables teams to deploy work faster and power their organizations with
machine learning.

The challenge facing data science teams today is that their ecosystem of tools and
workflows is very fragmented- resulting in lost productivity, dollars wasted on
computing resources, and process bottlenecks. Both data scientists and IT professionals
feel the burden of these inefficient workflows. While organizations are making
significant investments in data science capabilities, many are not seeing the value of
these investments, and are losing out on millions — if not billions — of dollars in profits
and operational cost savings that could be driven by machine learning.

By providing Oracle customers with a data science platform built on top of Oracle Cloud
Infrastructure and Oracle’s PaaS offerings, we will give enterprise organizations the
resources they need to realize the full potential of machine learning.

1
How is the new Oracle Data Science Cloud different from competitors?

The Oracle Data Science Cloud couples a best-in-breed workbench with the
infrastructure horsepower enterprise data science teams need to tackle high-impact
analyses. When compared to similar solutions from major cloud vendors like AWS
Sagemaker and Azure ML Workbench, we offer the best project-based platform for
enterprise data science teams where collaboration is a priority. Cloud-agnostic vendors
like Domino Data Lab and Databricks can’t match the horsepower that comes from our
platform’s tight integration with Oracle’s PaaS and IaaS services and access to Oracle’s
data and integration tools.

Highlights:
● Built for enterprise teams
○ Collaborative, project-driven UI
○ Native support for version control providers, including GitHub, GitLab, and
Bitbucket
● Leverages data science “horsepower” of Oracle PaaS and IaaS
○ Built on top of Oracle Cloud and can take advantage of features like fast
networking, GPU, and Kubernetes
● First-class access to Oracle data and integration tools
○ Native integration with Oracle data sources like the Autonomous Database,
Oracle Data Cloud, and Object Store
● Vision for Model Operations and Management
○ Planning a comprehensive system to train, track, evaluate, compare, and
operationalize models from the development stage to retirement

What are the components of the Oracle Data Science Cloud?

By launching a Jupyter Notebook session in the Oracle Data Science Cloud, users are
able to explore data, conduct analyses, create visualizations, and build models using
their favorite open source tools. When launching a notebook session, users can also
select from a list of curated Environments. Environments are collections of pre-installed
packages and libraries that support popular data science and machine learning use

cases, making it easy for data scientists to get projects up and running. Sessions can be
run on compute resources of various sizes, depending on a user’s needs.

All work on the platform can be easily saved and synced to an organization’s git provider
of choice — such as GitHub — and is organized by project. Team members and
stakeholders can be added as project collaborators with configurable access control
permissions. Once a model has been built in the platform, it can be deployed
programmatically as a REST API. Platform users have native access to Oracle Object
Store; connections to other data stores are also supported.

When will the new Oracle Data Science Cloud be available?

A public cloud version of the Oracle Data Science Cloud is slated for release at the end of
the first half of fiscal year 2019. For a more specific timeline, please check with Oracle’s
Product Management team.

Will the new Oracle Data Science Cloud be made available to sell on-
premises?

The Cloud at Customer version of the Oracle Data Science Cloud will be available
following the release of the OCI native offering. Please check with the Product
Management team for specific timelines and availability.

Will the new Oracle Data Science Cloud be made available on other public
clouds like Amazon, Google and Azure?

The new Oracle Data Science Cloud will only be available on Oracle Cloud or Oracle
Cloud at Customer. However, like many Oracle Cloud services, the platform will facilitate
access to remote datasets stored on other cloud providers.

How will existing development AI/ML cloud service work (AI Platform) at
Oracle be integrated with the Oracle Data Science Cloud?
3
The new Oracle Data Science Cloud is the consolidation of all data science capabilities in
the Oracle Cloud Platform. It enables collaboration among data scientists, model
training, model deployment, model management, and ongoing model operations
running as a service on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The team that worked on the Oracle
Cloud AI Platform has been combined with the DataScience.com team to deliver this
single, integrated data science cloud service.

What will the pricing be of the new Oracle Data Science Cloud?

As the new version of the platform is currently under development, final pricing
decisions have not been made. The pricing model will become public at the time of the
product’s release. Like all other Oracle Platforms, the Oracle Data Science Cloud will be
available under the standard cloud credit model.

Will there be a trial available for customers to try the new Oracle Data
Science Cloud?

Yes. Customers will have access to a limited trial version for which they can use Oracle
Cloud credits. At this time, there is no fixed date for access to trial environments.
However, customers who have immediate interest in the platform can participate in an
Early Adopter Program. If you have a qualified prospect you would like to submit for this
program, please submit a response on this page.
