Overview
To get the best results from the Compac InVision 9000 system, it is very important that the camera
cabinet is set up correctly.
Any large errors at the setup stage can have a significant impact on the performance of the blemish
system, so if at any stage during the setup you are unsure, unable to get the desired result or have
any questions, please feel free to contact the InVision team at [email protected],
mailto:[email protected] or [email protected] for advice.

Installation steps
The aim is for all documentation to apply the same or similar standards for consistency and
branding purposes and to inform Compac staff of the procedure around publishing
documents.
1. Lighting
InVision cabinets can come with two types of lighting systems. Fluorescent and LED. From
2013 onwards all 9000C and 9000CIR systems will come equipped with LED style lighting.
You will likely encounter fluorescent style lighting when completing regional service work and
or hardware upgrades. For the sake of this document it is assumed you are working with LED
style lighting.
For further information regarding the setup of LED lighting please refer to the following
documents in C:\SmartLEDManager\Help
2. Cameras
2.1 9000C systems
You will need to mount one camera on the incoming and one camera on the outgoing side of
the cabinet. Each camera should be on a single camera sliding block.
InVision 9000 CIR systems manufactured in 2009 or later will use ‘pixel matching’ hardware
and software. These systems should have adjustable camera mounting blocks, which allow
the two cameras to be tilted or rotated independently of each other.
For consistency, the color cameras should be mounted on the ‘incoming’ side of each
pair.
a. Open the ‘Iris Setting’ window in InVision, and select the camera you wish to focus.
b. Ensure the iris on the camera lens is fully open.
c. Place a calibration chart on the carriers. Draw an ROI over the chart that covers the
transitions between several patches.
d. For rough adjustment by eye, adjust the focus on the camera lens to get the sharpest
possible view of the details on the chart.
e. For fine adjustment, look at the ‘focus’ reading in the statistics at the top of the screen.
Adjust the focus slightly to get the highest possible reading.
NB. The ‘focus’ reading does not provide a measured value for focus, so you cannot
use it to compare between cameras or between lanes. It is just an aid to allow you to
focus each camera individually.
InVision 9000CIR ‘Pixel-matched’ systems are fitted with adjustable camera mounting blocks.
These blocks will allow one camera in the Color/IR pair to pivot horizontally, and the other
camera in the pair to pivot vertically.
The goal of this calibration is to have the center of the color and infrared images at the same
point on the conveyor.
Perform these procedures for each pair of color and infrared cameras in the system.
Steps a. and b. – The camera on the vertically adjusting block is selected and a chart is placed on the lane with a
distinctive line under the blue alignment marker
Steps c. – The camera on the horizontally adjusting block is selected. This image shows the view before the
adjustment is made.
Steps d. – The horizontally adjusting block is adjusted until the same line we used in step a. is under the blue
alignment marker.
Steps a. and b. – The horizontally adjustable camera is selected, a calibration chart is placed on the lane, and an
ROI is drawn around the patches on the chart.
Steps c. – The vertically adjustable camera is selected, this image shows the view before any adjustment is
made.
Steps d. – The vertically adjustable block is adjusted until the same part of the chart we identified in step b. is
bounded by the ROI.
An example of a camera view that appears on a diagonal. The vertically adjustable block is adjusted until the
same part of the chart we identified in step b. is bounded by the ROI.
a. Sliding the camera (or camera pair) back on forth using the sliding block, position the
incoming camera (or camera pair) to be as close as possible to the center of the cabinet
without the center wall of the cabinet appearing in the images. Tighten the nylon locking
bolts on the incoming camera.
b. Place a calibration chart on the lane, positioning a distinctive line on the chart so that it is
under the green alignment marker.
c. Switch to the outgoing camera (or camera pair), and adjust the sliding block until the
green alignment marker sits over the same distinctive line on the chart.
d. Tighten the nylon locking bolts on the outgoing camera to lock it in place.
Steps a. and b. – Notice we are viewing the incoming camera, and the chart has been positioned so the green
alignment marker is between patches 7 and 8.
Steps c. – Notice we are viewing the outgoing camera, the sliding block has been moved so the green alignment
marker is again between patches 7 and 8.
3. Adjust mirrors
Perform these procedures for the incoming and outgoing side of each lane in the system. Before
adjusting the mirrors, you should have the following items available:
• A piece of the largest produce you intend to run. Use this to ensure that you can get a full
view of even very large produce.
• The white 70mm calibration ball.
• A piece of white paper or brown cardboard. This is useful to help identify the dead band.
If you cannot see a ‘Dead Band’, try adjusting the tilt of the TVA mirror to move the top
and side view closer together until a dead band becomes visible. If you are still unable to
see a dead band, you may need to loosen the TVA mirror from its mount and raise it
slightly.
b. Draw an ROI around the dead-band. Once you have done this, click on ‘Tools’ -> ‘Centre
ROI vertically’. This will place the ROI in the center of the image.
c. Adjust the camera tilt mirror (Cn) until the dead band is again centered under the ROI.
Steps a. – Identify the “Dead Band” effect – where the top and side views fade into each other.
Note: If you cannot adjust the tvB mirror so that the whole carrier fits in the top view, it is
acceptable to readjust the Camera Tilt Angle slightly to widen the top view (making the
side view slightly smaller).
Place the largest fruit you expect to run (or an object the same size) on the carriers.
Make sure that it is not cut at the top of the image and does not extend into the dead band
Steps a. – The top view of the carriers should be centred so the entire carrier is visible in the top view, with a
5mm clearance on either side of the carrier. The largest produce you intend to run should fit in the top view.
Steps b. – The part of the produce touching the carriers should be as close as possible to the dead band, without
actually entering the dead band.
Steps b. – Notice the bottom edge of the produce in the side view is very dark. This is because the side view
mirror has been adjusted to place some of the produce inside the dead band. This should be avoided as it will
negatively impact colour and blemish grading.
A. and C. Is the recommended 5mm gap at the top and bottom of the image?
B. Is an ideal dead band, note that the shadow does not touch the carriers and the distance between
the top and side views is clearly defined.
a. Turn on profile view and view the calibration ball and uniformity chart in the IR screen.
b. Create a vertically elongated ROI over the white calibration ball
c. Using the left and right arrow keys, shift the ROI from the ball across to the calibration
chart.
d. When looking at the profile view, the blue line should not indicate a shadow near the
horizontal position of the calibration ball.
e. If a shadow is present near or on the ball then look at readjusting the position of the
dead band.
The profile of the side view shows the calibration ball is not illuminated evenly.
a. Set the Top inside LEDs to 3 amp the top outside LEDs to 4 amp and bottom LEDs to 6amp
b. Place a clean WHITE hockey ball in the center of your view create a ROI over both Top and
side view and bring up the brightness profiles in the Iris Setting Window as shown in the image
above.
c. If the profiles indicate shadows we can compensate for the comparatively darker side view
by reducing the top inside and outside LED currents until the brightness profiles get more and
more square.
The colour and IR views with the LED current settings adjusted to create a more even profile.
Step b. – The ACC chart should be positioned so most of It is visible in the side view, and there is no gap
between the ACC chart and the edge of the image..
