Lesson
Concepts of Manicure
1 and Pedicure
In the previous modules, you have learned about the structure of the nail and
identified different nail disorders and diseases and their treatment. You have also
learned the benefits of hand and foot spa treatment.
In this module, you will learn the concepts of manicure and pedicure. Basic
hygiene and safety measures will be described and decontamination is being
discussed. Before rendering manicure and pedicure services, nail structure and
conditions need to be analyzed and checked to address possible problems. The
client’s consultation is very important in rendering manicure and pedicure services.
Checking and analyzing the nail conditions were already discussed in the previous
lessons
3
A pedicure is a beauty treatment for improving the condition and appearance of
the feet and toenails. A standard pedicure starts with sanitizing the feet. This is
followed by filing and/or cutting the toenails, and soaking the feet in warm, soapy
water to which an antiseptic is added. Once the feet are softened, the therapist
then proceeds to scrub any areas of the foot which has hardened, rough skin.
Under the nail is cleaned and cuticles are gently pushed back. Nail polish is then
applied to the toenails.
Manicure and pedicure offer many benefits, including improving the texture and
appearance of hands and feet, prevention of hangnails, ingrown nails and nail
breakage. Treatments that include massage also help preserve the firmness and
elasticity of the skin on the hands and feet as well as aid circulation and improve
the flexibility of joints. Most nail polish can stay on nails for 2-3 weeks before
another manicure/pedicure if there is no deliberate damage to it.
The word manicure and pedicure are derived from two Latin words
MANUS – Hands PEDIS - Feet
CURA - Care CURA – Care
MANICURE
is the proper care of hands and nails.
PEDICURE
Is the proper care of feet and toenails.
Once you learned the concepts about manicure and pedicure, this could be your
stepping stone to augment personal income. This activity can be performed at
home.
Hygiene and sanitation in the beauty salon are important. The beauty therapist
must be very careful to maintain a safe and clean environment. To provide
professional manicure and pedicure services to clients you have to understand how
to prevent infection and cross infection.
4
Decontamination is the removal of all disease-causing pathogens. There are three
main ways to decontaminate or clean things in the salon:
Sanitizing - is a process that significantly reduces bacteria
Disinfecting - a chemical form of cleaning which kills most germs
Sterilizing - a cleaning method that kills all germs and bacteria
Sanitized tools and surfaces will still have pathogens or other organisms on them.
Washing your hands is a form of sanitizing. You may think that if you wash your
hands with soap and hot water that they are clean. Indeed they are ‘clean’ but they
will probably still have micro-organisms on them either from the tap or the towel
that you dried them on.
5
What can be sterilized?
Only hard, non-porous items can be sterilized. In the salon, this means metal tools
like metal nippers, scissors, and tweezers can be sterilized but tools like nail
brushes, cuticle pushers, and files that are made of plastic or wood can only be
disinfected.
Methods of sterilization
Bacteria and all other micro-organisms are killed by heat. Therefore, placing tools
and equipment in a container that heats them at very high temperatures is the best
way to sterilize. High-temperature sterilization can be wet or dry.
Types of Sterilizer
http://oasis.col.org/bitstream/handle/11599/1010/Manicure_Pedicure_BTEP_Final.pdf
Another dry form of sterilization is a special cabinet that contains a lamp that gives
off ultra-violet light. The rays of light destroy micro-organisms. Not all micro-
organisms are destroyed so the ultra-violet cabinet is best used for storing
equipment that has previously been sterilized by the autoclave or disinfected by
chemical method.
To keep previously sterilized tools clean when you are giving a treatment you can
put them in a jar of disinfectant solution (wet sterilizer). Liquid chemical agents are
also available which have to be diluted before use for sterilization. You must be
very careful when using these chemicals as they can harm your skin if it is touched
by the undiluted chemical.
Waste disposal
The waste matter must be disposed of correctly in the salon. Separate all waste.
Some items, such as blades must be disposed of in special containers for sharp
items. Empty chemical containers should be wrapped in plastic before putting
them in the dustbin to ensure there are no leakages. All waste bins should have a
self-closing lid.
6
Are you aware of the concept of a “green and sustainable environment?”
The main aspect of a green and sustainable environment is the concept of the 3
R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Empty bottles and cans could be re-used for storage of manicure implements.
Separating waste is an efficient way of identifying material that could be recycled,
for example, plastic bags.
Lesson
Client Consultation
2
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN THE SALON
Before you try to do a treatment, first you must understand the client's needs. You
can only get this data by asking them a lot of questions and attempting to answer
all the questions they might have asked you.
This is called effective communication. When answering them, the client should
understand the reason behind the questions asked and feel relaxed. You can speak
plainly when you talk to the customer so that she or he can understand. When he
or she speaks, you can learn to listen to the client and be able to carefully ask
questions.
Ask “open” questions which will encourage the client to give more than a one-word
response of ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
7
Open questioning techniques may begin with how, what, when, or where. For
example ‘How would you like nails to be done?’ ‘What nail care products do you use
currently?’
If, after the consultation, you are unsure of the client’s suitability for treatment,
tactfully explain to the client why this is and ask her to seek medical help before
treatment is given. The expectations of some clients may be unrealistic. If this is
the case tactfully explain why and aim to agree to a realistic treatment program.
At times a client may ask you for information outside your responsibilities, politely
inform her that you are not qualified or unable to deal with her request but you will
get someone you assist him/ her and indicate how long it will take if it will not be
immediately.
Modes of communication
Let us compare the two modes of communication.
1. Verbal Communication:
Use of words spoken or written to express ideas and feelings
2. Non-Verbal Communication:
Communication without words e.g.
body language/ body posture
gestures (hand)
eye contact
facial expression
Body Language –
Without saying a word your body can reveal what you are feeling or thinking
Your ability to read your client’s body language is important
We will now look at the examples of body language. What might the following non-
verbal cues mean?
8
DOS AND DON’TS IN COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR CLIENT
There are certain things that you should do and should not do when handling
clients. When speaking, always speak clearly and precisely, and avoid using slang.
It is important to be a good listener, this will help you identify the client’s treatment
requirements and understand her/ his personality. You can then guide the
conversation appropriately.
Communication, as you might have known, includes all facets of life. Poor
communication can lead to disagreements, tension and conflict and it can be time-
wasting. All these affect good service delivery.
Client consultation
This is done to assess the condition of the client’s skin, nails and cuticles. An
effective analysis will help you to choose appropriate tools and products.
9
Consultation is done in a private room. Recording and keeping your analysis on the
client’s record card will help you compare the progression of the treatment. The
information you have collected from the client is confidential and should be stored
in a secure area following the client's treatment. You have to protect the client’s
privacy and confidentiality according to the Data Protection Act 1998. This is
especially true with recording their biographical data such as contact details, age
and medical history.
Assessment
One of the important parts of the manicure and pedicure treatment is the nail and
skin assessment. This makes it possible to decide as to what care plan is needed
for the client.
3. Advising the client following your assessment of the client’s nail, cuticle and skin
condition on the most suitable and frequency of the treatment.
Post Treatment
When you have completed the treatment you should inquire from your client if he/
she is satisfied.
10
what future treatments you recommended
the products you used and those recommended for home care.
A client card should be provided.
Let Us Practice
How is the lesson going now? Show that you have learned something by doing an
independent practice. This will help you understand the lesson better. Read each
question carefully and identify what is being described in the sentence. Write your
answer on your answer sheet.
11
Let Us Practice More
Well done! Now, let’s transfer what you have learned from this module by
completing the table below.
Write on the second column how items in the salon should be cleaned. In the third
column, write how the item can be decontaminated. Number 1 is given as your
guide. Do it on your answer sheet.
4. Work surfaces
5. Orangewood stick
6. Hands
Let Us Remember
The concepts of manicure and pedicure and client consultation were discussed
in this module.
You learned that manicure and pedicure derived from two Latin words Manus
means hand, Pedis means feet, Cura means to care.
Manicure is the proper care of hands and nails.
Pedicure is the proper care of feet and toenails.
Manicure and pedicure have similarities in terms of treatment.
Hygiene and sanitation in the beauty salon are important
You also learned the importance of washing your hands as a way of removing
bacteria.
There are three main ways to decontaminate or clean objects in the salon:
Sanitation is the lowest level of decontamination or cleaning. This method does
not remove all bacteria.
12
Disinfection is the second level of decontamination. Disinfectants are chemicals
that destroy most (not all) bacteria and some viruses.
Sterilization is the highest level of decontamination. It destroys all the living
organisms on an object (both harmless ones and pathogens).
You learned the importance of separating waste and recycling. Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle.
You also learned about the key elements of communication and its effects on
your relationship with others. The key elements discussed were:
paying attention to what others are saying
making eye contact: look at people when you communicate with them
asking questions
listening: listen twice as much as you speak
responding: knowing when to respond and what to say
When you apply these principles you would discover that they:
bring success to your business
reduce chances of tension
close the gaps of assumptions
encourage good interpersonal relations
enable individuals or groups to perform effectively
The two modes of communication are:
Verbal communication is the use of words, written or verbal to express
your ideas.
Non-Verbal communication refers to body language and includes
gestures, facial expressions, and body posture.
It is helpful to remember basic rules, Do’s and Don’ts of communication.
Consultation is done to assess the condition of the client’s skin, nails, and
cuticles as well as to identify any contra-indications.
Before carrying out the consultation you must record the client’s details such as
name, address, contact details and any medical conditions that may affect the
health of the skin and nail. This information must be treated as confidential.
Making a treatment plan is important. This is necessary for the decision you are
going to make for your client. The materials that you are going to be used, and
when they can return for follow-up treatments.
A successful business will depend on your communicating with your clients;
informing them about specials, reminding them of their appointments,
informing them if you have an emergency and need to rebook.
13
