17. Read the following case and answer the questions.
Henry Ford was born in Spring wells Township, Michigan in July of 1863. He was the first
of six children born to Irish-born William Ford and his wife Mary. Being born to an
immigrant parent who had to work his way up in his attempt to achieve the American
Dream, Ford learned the value of hard work from a young age.
This manifested through his love for mechanics. By age 12, he spent most of his time in a
machine shop that he had made and stocked himself. By 15, he constructed the first
steam engine. From his knowledge, he was able to become a machinist’s apprentice in
Detroit. Working under the machinists at James F. Flower and Brothers, as well as the
Detroit Dry Dock Company, Ford finished his apprenticeship in 1882. He never went to
school at all but learned his trade through apprenticeships. With new found knowledge
and skills, Ford set out to make his mark on the world. He was employed by Edison
Illuminating Company of Detroit, becoming chief engineer in 1893. Because of his
employment there, he and Thomas Edison became lifelong friends. However, in 1899,
Ford resigned from Edison’s company. He formed the Detroit Automobile Company
alongside others who shared his love for mechanics. Unfortunately, within 18 months, the
company had gone bankrupt. This left him open to form the Henry Ford Company two
years later, in 1901. He eventually left this company as well. All the while, Ford was
creating some of the fastest race cars of the time. In 1903, Henry, along with 12 other
investors finally created the Ford Motor Company. By 1906, he became the company’s
president and controlling owner. Finally, he became the sole owner in 1919. He remained
president on and off until he died.
On one side of the coin there are people like Henry Ford and many others who are
examples of successful entrepreneurs who did not necessarily go to educational
institutions rendering entrepreneurial related knowledge. While the other side of the
coin shows students who from their early age are engaged in brainstorming projects,
taking part in seminars and conferences, knowledge sharing through classroom teaching
learning process, and many more other initiatives, all these so they can acquire
entrepreneurial knowledge. India alone has many colleges, universities and B-schools to
offer education on entrepreneurship development. The common ground here is that
students are required to develop their own ideas, plan ventures, develop their products
and services for commercialization, and then go to market.
However, the critics say that students may benefit learning the mechanics of business but
the psychological redirection of effort toward money making is inappropriate. This
further leads to the question whether entrepreneurship can be taught in the sense that
most students do not have entrepreneurial personalities.
(Excerpts from the greyjournal.net and David Holt)

(a) What aspects of entrepreneurship can you see in the case study?
(b) Can entrepreneurship be a career option? Comment.
(c) Take a position with respect to the controversy “whether students can be taught to be
entrepreneurs.” [3+3+4]
