Capstone Project

Level 2 headings may be created by course

providers in the future.
Bookmark this page
Note: You will find the data for this capstone project in the Week
4 folder of your course exercise files.

For the final capstone project of this course, you will complete a
Power BI project on your own with no guidance from your instructor.
You will receive a CSV file that contains data showing daily case
counts across the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. These
are cumulative case counts, which means the count on a particular
day represents the count from the previous day plus any new
confirmed cases.

Your task is to build a Power BI dataset and report that prepares,

models, and visualizes this data. This will require the use of
techniques that span Power Query and DAX, including dimensional
modeling and time intelligence functions.

Objectives:

1. Connect to the data source and restructure it into a star schema

model that utilizes dimension tables and a single fact table. You may
choose to augment the CSV file with data that we used in previous
weeks of this course, but be aware that this may require you to clean
up the data so you can get country names to match between the two
different data sources.
2. Build a date dimension table that allows you to analyze the data by
day, week, month, and year. (reference: Date and time functions
(DAX) - DAX | Microsoft Learn)
3. Calculate growth rates for the daily case counts. Perhaps daily,
monthly, or yearly growth rates would be useful?
4. Calculate non-cumulative daily case counts, as seen in the example
table below. This involves simple arithmetic that can be achieved
using the DAX techniques we learned in Weeks 1 and 2.
5. Visualize the data to show both cumulative and non-cumulative case
counts over time, with the option to filter the data by countries and
time periods.
6. Apply dashboard design principles to organize your information
based on its importance. Consider using PowerPoint as we've shown
earlier in this course to design a custom background for your report
pages(s), or to design icons.
7. Don't be afraid to get creative with this. If you augment the project
with outside data, maybe you can aggregate the case counts by
regions. Or maybe you can find a way to smooth out the volatility in
the non-cumulative case counts.
