LECTURE 6: CHAIN RULE

MATP 112: CALCULUS 1

ISAAC KWESI ACQUAH

UNIVERSITY OF EUDCATION, WINNEBA
DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS EDUCATION
CHAIN RULE
The chain rule is by far the trickiest derivative rule, but it’s
not really that bad if you carefully focus on a few important
points.
Suppose you are asked to differentiate the function 𝑓 𝑥 =
𝑥 2 + 1, then the differentiation formulas we have learned
in the previous lesson do not enable us to calculate 𝑓 ′ 𝑥 .
 we observe that F(x) is a composite function and therefore
we have to apply a special rule called the chain rule to solve
it.
The Chain Rule: If g is differentiable at x and f is
differentiable at g(x), then the composite function f=f.g
defined by F(x)=f(g(x)) is differentiable at x and 𝑓 ′ is given by
the product
CHAIN RULE
In Leibniz notation, if y=f(u) and u=g(x) are both
differentiable functions, then

STEP INVOLVED IN CHAIN RULE

1. You start with the outside function, √ , and differentiate
that, IGNORING what’s inside. To make sure you ignore
the inside, temporarily replace the inside function with
the word stuff.
2. Multiply the result from Step 1 by the derivative of the
inside function, 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑓𝑓 ′ .
CHAIN RULE
3. Differentiate the inside stuff.

4. Now put the real stuff and its derivative back where they

belong.

5. Simplify.
CHAIN RULE
Example 1:
𝑓 ′ 𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 + 1
Solution
if we let 𝑢 = 𝑥 2 + 1 and 𝑦 = 𝑢, then

𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑢
𝑓′ 𝑥 =
𝑑𝑢 𝑑𝑥

1
𝑓 𝑥 = (2𝑥)
2 𝑢

1 𝑥
𝑓′ 𝑥 = 2𝑥 =
2 𝑥2 + 1 𝑥2 + 1
CHAIN RULE
Example 2
𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑦 = sin(𝑥 2 )
Solution
if we let 𝑢 = 𝑥 2 and 𝑦 = sin(𝑢), then

𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑢
𝑓′ 𝑥 =
𝑑𝑢 𝑑𝑥

𝑓 ′ 𝑥 = 2𝑥𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑢)

𝑓 ′ 𝑥 = 2𝑥𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑥 2 )
CHAIN RULE
Example 3
𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 − 1 100
Solution
Taking u= g(x)=𝑥 3 − 1 and n=100

𝑑𝑦 𝑑 3 100
𝑑 3
= 𝑥 −1 = 100 𝑥3 −1 99 𝑥 −1
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

= 100 𝑥 3 − 1 99 . 3𝑥 2

300𝑥 2 𝑥 3 − 1 99
