II you were designing a circuit Ior maximum power dissipation at the load resistance, this theorem
would be very useIul. Having reduced a network down to a Thevenin voltage and resistance (or Norton
current and resistance), you simply set the load resistance equal to that Thevenin or Norton equivalent (or
vice versa) to ensure maximum power dissipation at the load. Practical applications oI this might include
radio transmitter Iinal ampliIier stage design (seeking to maximize power delivered to the antenna or
transmission line), a grid tied inverter loading a solar array, or electric vehicle design (seeking to maximize
power delivered to drive motor).
PROCEDURE:
1. Make the connections as shown in Iigure1.
2. Keeping R
s
in maximum position, apply voltage and note down current Ilowing through and voltage
across load resistance R
L
.
3. Increase the value oI R
L
and note down the above readings in regular intervals.
4. Tabulate I

and V
L.
5. Plot the curve between P
L
versus R
L.
6. To Iind R
th
Connect the circuit as shown in Iigure2 and note down the ammeter reading by applying 30
Volts.
7. To Iind V
th
Connect the circuit as shown in Iigure3 and note down the voltmeter reading by applying
30 Volts.
