2.0.0 DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM

2.1.0 INTRODUCTION

The quality of data collected is an important ingredient to the effectiveness of data

retrieval and analysis. Therefore, it is important to identify each source of
information and to ensure that accurate data are timely transmitted.
Information given must be detailed enough for easier interpretation and future
analysis.
(For instance, a PIREPS stating only “Pack Fault” should be avoided; details on the
environment should be indicated: in climb, with Pack 1 operating)

2.2.0 DATA SOURCE AND DATA COLLECTED

2.2.1 Pilot Reports/Maintenance Reports

Pilot reports, (PIREPS) are reports of occurrences and malfunctions entered in the
Aircraft Technical Log Book by the flight crew. PIREPS are among the most
significant sources of information, since they are a direct indication of aircraft
reliability as experienced by the crew.
Maintenance Reports (MAREPS) are entered in the Aircraft Technical Log Book by
the maintenance.

The information provided includes the following data:

- Date
- Aircraft identification (tail number/registration)
- Flight Number
- Station
- ATA
- Flight phase
- PIREP/MAREP description
- Action/Rectification (with the name or approval number of who performed it)

Log book entries given for information only (i.e.: cat II landing performed,...) should not be
counted as a PIREPS in the database.

2.2.2 Operational Interruptions

Aircraft Operational Interruptions (delays, cancellations, diversions, in-flight turn-

backs, return to ramp) resulting from Technical defects or Operational reason are
reported daily by flight operations or line maintenance and are routed to the

Reliability Section. Each report gives the cause of delay and clearly identifies the
system or component in which the defect occurred.

The information provided includes the following data:

- Date
- Aircraft identification (tail number/registration)
- Flight Number
- Station
- ATA
- Flight phase
- Operational Interruption type (delay, cancellation, diversion, in-flight turn-
back, return to ramp)
- Delay duration
- Operational Interruption description
- Action/Rectification (with the name or approval number of who performed it)

2.2.3 Technical Incidents

The Technical Incident monitoring is important in order to identify problems
affecting airworthiness and potentially affecting safety of operations.
The definition of a Technical Incident is detailed in the Appendix. The Technical
Log Sheet provides details of the incident. (See forms MCM: BGSL/MNT/F-001)

The information provided includes the following data:

- Date
- Aircraft identification (tail number/registration)
- Flight Number
- Station
- ATA
- Flight phase
- Technical Incident description
- Action/Rectification (with the name or approval number of who performed it)

2.2.4 In-Flight Shut Downs

Flight crew reports of engine shutdowns include details of the indications and
symptoms prior to shutdown. IFSD rates provide an overall measure of propulsion
system reliability.
In-Flight Shut Downs are reported by the Flight Crew on a technical log sheet and
are routed to Reliability Section.

The information provided includes the following data:

- Date
- Aircraft identification (tail number/registration)
- Engine identification (Serial Number)
- ATA

- Flight phase
- IFSD description (including indications and symptoms before shut-down)
- Action/Rectification (with the name or approval number of who performed it)

2.2.5 Engine Parameters (engine condition monitoring)

The parameters monitored are listed below, which are obtained from the instrument
reading form filled in by the crew:

The information includes:

- Date
- A/C registration
- Flight No.
- GMT
- Gross weight
- IAS/Mach No./Altitude
- OAT/TAT
- Engine Parameters (i.e. N1, EGT, N2, FF, TLA, Oil press, Oil Temp,
Vibration)

2.2.6 Aircraft Utilization

The information provided regarding Aircraft Utilization includes the following data:
- Date
- Aircraft identification (tail number/registration)
- Flight Number
- Aircraft Block-to-block times
- Flight times
- Cycles
- Flight nature (Revenue, ferry, training,)

The Technical log sheet supplies this information.

2.2.7 Component Removals

The information provided regarding Component Removals includes the following

data:
- Date
- Aircraft type
- Component Location
- P/N out, S/N out; P/N in, S/N in
- Airframe hours/cycles at removal
- Component hours/cycles since new/overhaul/repair/calibration
- Reason for removal (Scheduled/Unscheduled/Convenience)
- Reason for removal description

The Technical log sheet and the Technical Records section supplies this
information.

2.2.8 Aircraft Deferred Defects

An Aircraft Deferred Defect is an inoperable system or component, which does not

require an immediate corrective action according to MEL.
The monitoring of Aircraft Deferred Defects results in general in launching
correctives actions in the following areas: additional spare provisioning, review of
transit time, additional manpower.

The information provided includes the following data:

- Date
- Aircraft identification (tail number/registration)
- Flight Number
- Description of the technical snag, reason for deferral
- MEL reference
- MEL CAT
Sample deferred defects form is in MCM: BGSL/MNT/F-005).

2.3.0 DATA STORAGE

2.3.1 Storage System

Data that can be entered into the computer is entered. Reliability Section computer
is the data base system used by the Reliability Section to store the data collected
under the RCP. Other data, in which there is currently no computer program
running, is kept in files.
