FORCED VIBRATIONS

1. When a system was subjected to damped vibration test the measured

frequency was 10 hz. When the same system was subjected to constant
excitation force, the measured peak frequency was 9.6 hz. Then what is the
natural frequency and damping factor of the system?
2. The expression 4𝑥̈ + 1.2𝑥̇ + 100𝑥 = 1.2 𝑆𝑖𝑛 10𝑡 represents single degree
freedom system. Calculate the following:
i) damped natural frequency of the system
ii) frequency at peak amplitude
iii) peak amplitude
iv) amplitude at resonance
3. The equation 2𝑥̈ + 3𝑥̇ + 50𝑥 = 0.8 𝑆𝑖𝑛 3𝑡 describes single freedom
system. The units are in S.I. Calculate natural frequency, damping factor,
amplitude of steady state vibration, phase angle difference, amplitude of
vibration resonance and the ratio of any two successive amplitudes.
4. A system of beams supports a motor of mass 1200 kg. The motor has an
unbalanced mass of 1 kg located at 6 cms radius. It is known that the
resonance occurs at 2210 rpm. What amplitude of vibration can be
expected at the motors operating speed of 1440 rpm, if damping factor is
assumed to be less than 0.1?
5. A single cylinder vertical petrol engine of total mass 320 kg is mounted
upon a steel chassis frame and causes a vertical state deflection of 0.2 cms.
The reciprocating parts of the engine have a mass of 24 kg and moves
through a vertical stroke of 15 cms with SHM. ‘e’ can be considered to be
half the stroke length. A dashpot is provided, the damping resistance of
which is directly proportional to the velocity and amounts to 490 N at 0.3
m/sec. Determine the following:
i) Speed of driving shaft at which resonance will occur.
ii) Amplitude of steady forced vibrations when driving shaft of
the engine rotates at 490 rpm.
6. A motor mass of 60 kg is mounted on a simply supported beam that has a
stiffness of 39200 N/m. The rotor of the motor has a mass of 10 kg and has
an eccentricity of 0.1 mm. What will be the amplitude of vibrations of the
motor when it runs at 1440 rpm? Neglect damping, the weight of the beam
and deflection of the motor shaft. Derive the equation used, starting from
the fundamentals.
7. Time of free vibration of a mass hung from the end of a helical spring is
0.8 sec. When the mass is stationary, the upper end is made to move
upwards with displacement ‘y’ mm given by 𝑦 = 18 𝑆𝑖𝑛 2𝜋𝑡, where ‘t’ is
the time in seconds measured from the beginning of the motion. Neglecting
the mass of spring and damping effects, determine the vertical distance
through which the mass is moved in the first 0.3 seconds.
8. The support of a spring mass system is vibrating with an amplitude of 5
mm and a frequency of 1150 cycles/min. If the mass is 0.9 kg and the spring
has a stiffness of 1960 N/m, determine the amplitude of vibration of the
mass. What amplitude will result if a damping factor of 0.2 is included in
the system?
9. The springs of an automobile trailer are compressed 0.1m under its own
weight. Find the critical speed when the trailer is travelling over a road
with a profile approximated by a sine wave of amplitude 0.08 m and wave
length of 14 meters. What will be the amplitude of vibration at 60 kmph?
