DISCUSSION
A. Definition of Communication
Anendya Niervana (2021), Effective communication is the process of
transmitting ideas, thoughts, or information from the sender of the message
(communicator) to the recipient of the message (communicant) which results
in a positive relationship or reciprocity for both parties. Effective
communication is characterized by achieving goals through the
communication process carried out.
3
Inability to Listen to Others
Active listening is an important aspect of effective communication. You
cannot engage with someone if you are not listening to them because you
will tend to make assumptions about their needs based on your
perceptions versus reality.
Lack of Transparency & Trust
It is extremely difficult to communicate anything when there is a lack of
transparency and trust. For example, if your staff believes you are
holding something back, they will be anxious, some will speculate, and
as a result, it will be more difficult for them to process any attempt you
make to communicate with them.
Communication Styles (when they differ)
Everyone has their own communication style. Some people are very
direct while others prefer a more indirect approach. Some use detailed
data, while others rely on generalities, and so forth. Occasionally, one
person is so entrenched in their way of communicating, they find it
difficult to communicate with others who rely on a different style. You
might hear comments such as, “Mary never explains what she wants me
to do, she’s never specific” or “Bill gets so caught up in the weeds, that I
lose focus on the bigger picture.”
Conflicts in the Workplace
Conflict can happen for a variety of reasons and when it does, it becomes
a barrier to effective communication. The nature of the conflict is not
necessarily important, what is important is working to resolve the
conflict. When conflict is not eradicated, it grows and then people begin
to take sides, which further impedes effective communication.
Cultural Differences & Language
It is important to understand the cultural differences in communication.
But don’t just think international as in remembering that in Japan one’s
surname precedes their given name. There can also be regional
differences – for example, a northerner might not like the term "y’all" or
even understand the more comprehensive version, "all y’all." While these
4
examples may seem trivial, the point is that cultural differences can occur
within the boundaries of the US, and when one does not recognize
cultural differences, they risk offending the other person. It is in the
offense that communication breaks down.
C. Advantages of effective Communication
a. Building strong relationships
One of the most important aspects of having good Communication Skills
are to build meaningful professional and personal relationships. You can
understand more about them by going through these components:
Foundation of trust: Effective communication fosters
transparency and honesty. It is an essential element for building
trust in any relationship.
Deepened understanding: Regular and open dialogue allows
individuals to understand each other's perspectives, emotions,
and motivations, leading to deeper connections.

addressing and resolving misunderstandings or disagreements,
preventing them from escalating into larger issues.

aspirations aligns individuals towards common objectives,
reinforcing their connection.

cultural nuances and differences, promoting inclusivity and
respect in diverse relationships.

tone based on the situation and the individual they're interacting
with, ensuring that the relationship remains harmonious.

can drive change, secure funding, or initiate new projects within
an organisation.

to understanding client needs, ensuring customer satisfaction, and
fostering long-term business relationships.
Feedback reception: Those skilled in communication are typically
more receptive to feedback, viewing it as an avenue for growth
rather than criticism.

negotiations. They are able to articulate their standpoints clearly
and understand the positions of others.
Professional development: Regularly participating in discussions,
meetings, and conferences not only enhances visibility but also
contributes to continuous learning.
c. Facilitating Problem Solving
Effective Communication Skills help you to solve problems both in your
personal and professional life. This is how you can use your skills for
problem-solving:
Identification of issues: Clear communication allows team
members to articulate challenges, ensuring that everyone
understands the problem's root cause.
Collaborative solutions: Open dialogues foster brainstorming
sessions where diverse perspectives converge, leading to
innovative solutions.
Mitigation of conflicts: Effective communication helps address
misunderstandings, preventing them from escalating into major
disputes.
Decision-making process: Engaging in constructive discussions
aids in weighing pros and cons, ensuring well-informed decisions.
7
Feedback loop: A continuous communication channel ensures
feedback is received, processed, and acted upon, refining
solutions further.
Stakeholder alignment: Clear communication ensures that all
stakeholders, from team members to management, are aligned
with the proposed solutions.
Documentation: Properly documenting discussions and decisions
aids in creating a reference point, ensuring consistency in
approach and understanding.
D. Porpose of The Effective Communication
The purpose of effective communication is multifaceted and crucial in
various aspects of life. Here are some key purposes:
Exchange of Information: Effective communication facilitates the sharing
of ideas, thoughts, and information between individuals or groups. This
ensures that everyone involved understands the message being conveyed.
Building Relationships: Good communication fosters healthy
relationships, whether personal or professional. It helps in establishing
trust, mutual respect, and understanding among individuals, which are
essential for strong interpersonal connections.
Conflict Resolution: Clear and effective communication is vital in
resolving conflicts and misunderstandings. It enables parties to express
their concerns, listen to each other, and find mutually acceptable
solutions.
Decision Making: Effective communication plays a critical role in the
decision-making process. It ensures that all relevant information is
conveyed accurately, enabling informed decisions to be made.
Achieving Goals: Whether in personal endeavors or within organizations,
effective communication is essential for aligning efforts toward common
goals. It ensures that everyone understands their roles, responsibilities,
and objectives.
Influence and Persuasion: Communication skills are instrumental in
influencing and persuading others. Whether it's convincing someone of
8
an idea, selling a product, or gaining support for a cause, effective
communication enhances one's ability to persuade and influence others
positively.
Enhancing Productivity: Clear communication within teams and
organizations boosts productivity by reducing misunderstandings,
streamlining processes, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
Personal Development: Effective communication is integral to personal
growth and development. It involves active listening, self-expression, and
understanding others' perspectives, which are essential skills for self-
improvement and building empathy.
In summary, the purpose of effective communication is to facilitate
understanding, foster relationships, resolve conflicts, support decision-
making, achieve goals, influence others positively, enhance productivity, and
promote personal development.
2/ Verbal and nonverbal cues: The Effective Communication includes the use
of spoken words as well as nonverbal cues like facial expressions, tone of
voice, and body language.
9
3/ Less formal: The Effective Communication is often less formal than written
communication and may involve informal language. However, the level of
formality can vary depending on the context of the communication.
10
3/ Interviewing: This type of communication involves one individual asking
questions of another individual. Interviews are often used in job interviews, media
interviews, and research interviews.
4/ Video Conferencing: This form of communication is similar to face-to-face
communication but takes place over video conferencing software. Video
conferencing proves beneficial for remote teams and individuals unable to meet in

CHAPTER III
CLOSING
A. Conclusion
Communication is the foundation for the midwife profession in
providing midwifery care because the midwife's job is to provide services to
the community. The communication process is a delivery of messages, ideas,
or symbols to other people in order to achieve the same perception as desired
by the communicator. The purpose of communication is to facilitate and
facilitate the achievement of goals. The basic elements of communication
consist of the communicator, message, communication channel,
communication method, communicant, environment, and feedback. Basically,
communication is very important for everyone, especially students. Because
apart from being required to be able to speak and communicate, a teacher
must also be able to communicate continuously. Many processes for effective
communication also use other media. The process of exchanging information
and ideas will produce feedback, so that attitudes and behavior that were
previously deviant can be changed.
B. Suggestion
We hope that the paper that our group has written can be useful and
can be applied to society later. It can also be used as reference material for
subsequent assignments related to communication as well as for other
students who need information regarding effective communication material.
