SINGLE NEEDLE LOCKSTITCH MACHINE PARTS AND FUNCTIONS

1.1. Name and Purpose of major parts


1. Needle bar: holds the needle so that its up and down movement gives the needle its movement
2. Presser foot: holds the fabric firmly so that it will not move up and down together with the needle
3. Thread Retainer: a three holes guide that gives small amount of tension to the thread so that it will
flow to the tension discs uniformly.
4. Pretension: a simple tension disc used to regulate the thread so that it will feed in to the tension
assembly evenly.
5. Machine pulley: the part that controls the motion of the machine manually and/or electrically
6. Reverse stitch lever: a lever used to make the needle sew backwards to make strong stitches at the
start and end of sewing.
7. Bobbin winder: used to fill the lower (bobbin) thread
8. Finger guard: protects the finger from getting injured by the needle while sewing.
9. Thread take up cover: guards the thread take up and prevents it from causing injury
10. Belt cover: covers the belt that transmits motion from the motor to the machine

11. Thread take up lever: it’s up and down movement makes the upper thread unwinds from thread cones.
12. Tension post (discs): to tighten or loosen the upper thread.
13. Feed dog: it’s clockwise and anti clockwise rotation gives the fabric its movement making sewing
possible.
14. Bobbin: a shuttle where the lower thread winded on.
15. Bobbin case: holds the bobbin with a mechanism to adjust the bobbin thread tension.
16. Knee lifter: used to lift the presser foot while or at the start and end of sewing.
17. Presser foot lifter (hand lifter): used to raise the presser foot during lower thread winding, protecting
the feed dogs from damage.
18. Needle plate: the semi circular part where the presser foot lands on and with marks on it.
19. Face plate: the part beside the needle plate which can be opened when fixing the bobbin case in to the
hook set.
20. Hook set: used to hold the bobbin case
21. Oil gauge window: used to view the oil quantity without lifting the machine head.
22. Pedal: used to run the machine or gets the machine to action.
23. Power switch button: used to turn machine on and off .
24. Spool pins(thread stands) for the upper and lower thread: used to hold the cone of the upper and
lower threads
