DESIGN RAINFALL CALCULATION Page 1 of 4

Scope:
This document details the design rainfall calculation for Job of EIL at BPCL Mumbai.

Hourly Rainfall Calculation:

Annual daily maximum rainfall values are converted to 1 hour short duration rainfall using IMD Formula,

where, Pt = Rainfall in mm for t hours duration,

P24 = Daily Rainfall data in mm,
t = Shorter duration in hours.

Table of Historical Maximum Rainfall data (IMD) and corresponding hourly rainfall

Gumbel’s Extreme Value distribution method is used for calculating design rainfall intensity in mm/hr.

The rainfall (PT) corresponding of a given return period (T) using the Gumbel’s Distribution is given by,

where, Pave = Average Annual Daily Maximum Rainfall,

S = Standard Deviation of Annual Daily Maximum Rainfall.

The Mean and Standard Deviation are calculated using this formula,

and,

Mean of hourly rainfall from 1970 to 2022 for 1 hour duration = 75.44 mm
Standard Deviation of hourly rainfall from 1970 to 2022 for 1 hour duration = 21.12 mm

K = Gumbel Frequency Factor.

where, T = Return Period in years.

For 50 years Return Period,

Frequncy Factor, K = 2.592
Design Rainfall for 1 hour duration, Pt = 130.19 mm

Intensity of Rainfall, IT (in mm/hr) is given by,

where, Td = duration in hours. (1 hour)

Design Intensity from Gumbel's Distribution, IT = 130.19 mm/hr

Return Period Empirical Constants Intensity, Correlation Coefficient,

(Year) x y i = x.(td)^-y R
5 653 0.66 i = 653*(td)^-0.66 1
10 770.2 0.66 i = 770.2*(td)^-0.66 1
25 919.8 0.66 i = 919.8*(td)^-0.66 0.999
50 1035 0.66 i = 1035*(td)^-0.66 0.999
100 1142 0.66 i = 1142*(td)^-0.66 0.999

To estimate the maximum rainfall intensity for different duration and return periods, the following
empirical equation is used.
i = x * (td)-y

where, i = Rainfall Intensity in mm/hr,

td = Rainfall Duration in minutes and
x and y are the Empirical Constants.

IT = i * R

For 50 years Return Period and Time Duration, td = 1 hour,

IT = 1035 * (1 * 60) (-0.66) * 0.999 = 69.33 mm/hr

Design Intensity from Empirical Equation, IT = 69.33 mm/hr
