WHERE DO MY RECYCLABLES GO?
Do you ever wonder what happens to your recyclables after they leave your house? That
squashed can of Coca-Cola? How about your old homework paper? Let’s take a look!
First, the garbage truck picks up your recycled items and takes them to the Materials Recovery
Facility, or MRF. This is where they sort the recycled materials into different groups: iron and steel,
aluminum, glass bottles, paper, wood, and plastics. A tractor pushes the waste onto a conveyor belt,
where workers pick out the pieces of trash that may damage the MRF machines. Sometimes we
accidentally put the wrong things in our recycling bin, so these workers help to take them out.
Once all the recyclables are sorted into different groups, each type of material is either put into
big containers, or they are baled. This means that they are crushed into big cubes. Some materials are
cleaned, others are crushed, and most are melted; but all of these materials get recycled into a new
product.
At the end of the whole process, the materials that were picked out by the workers or cannot be
recycled will be taken to a landfill. This is why it is so important to recycle and to only put what is
allowed into your recycling bin. If we throw our recyclables into a regular trash bin, they won’t be sent
to the MRF and will therefore end up in a landfill. This is a waste of resources and bad for the
environment.
27. What does MRF stand for?
A. Materials Reclamation Facility B. Mutual Recognition of Funds
C. Medication Request Form D. Materials Recovery Facility
28. Why do the workers pick out trash from the conveyor belt?
A. They want to recycle the trash. B. They want to take the trash home.
C. They want to avoid damaging the machines. D. They want to clean the trash.
29 To ‘bale’ is to ________________.
A. crush into big cubes. B. put on the conveyor belt.
C. melt into big cubes. D. clean the trash.
30. All the materials in the MRF eventually ________________.
A. go into a landfill B. get recycled into a new product
C. get cleaned and sold D. go in the trash
31. What happens if we throw our trash into a regular trash bin?
A. The trash won’t be sent to the MRF and will end up in a landfill.
B. The trash will be recycled and turned into new products.
C. The trash will be cleaned and sold as new.
D. The trash will be sent to the MRF.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.
The costs and benefits of global warming will vary greatly from area to area. For moderate
climate change, the balance can be difficult to assess. But the larger the change in climate, the more
negative the consequences will become. Global warming will probably make life harder, not easier, for
most people. This is mainly because we have already built enormous infrastructure based on the climate
we now have.
People in some temperate zones may benefit from milder winters, more abundant rainfall, and
expanding crop production zones. But people in other areas will suffer from increased heat waves,
coastal erosion, rising sea level, more erratic rainfall, and droughts.
The crops, natural vegetation, and domesticated and wild animals (including seafood) that
sustain people in a given area may be unable to adapt to local or regional changes in climate. The ranges
of diseases and insect pests that are limited by temperature may expand, if other environmental
conditions are also favourable.
In its summary report on the impacts of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change stated, "Taken as a whole, the range of published evidence indicates that the net damage costs of
climate change are likely to be significant and to increase over time.”
