Introduction

1 Introduction

This document is a general description of the battery unit.

For information regarding installation, refer to the relevant enclosure or power

system installation instruction.

38/1551-LZA 701 6011/3 Uen E | 2017-12-08 1

Battery Unit Description

2 Product Overview

The battery unit is 48 V DC lithium-ion (Li-ion), designed for indoor

environment and used for backup power in radio systems.

The built-in Battery Management System (BMS) monitors and controls the
battery functions to ensure that the battery unit operates in a safe, reliable,
and efficient way.

The battery unit is delivered with an installation accessory kit.

2.1 Main Features

• High energy density and excellent safety

• Long service life and cycle life

• Easily installed, powered up, and maintained

• High reliability and excellent electromagnetic compatibility

• Real-time monitored and controlled by the BMS

• Possible to monitor remotely with the Ericsson Site Controller (ESC)

• Adjusts the stage of charging and discharging automatically

• Suitable for 19-inch standard racks

• Natural air-cooling with low noise

2.2 BMS Functions

When the battery unit is powered on, the BMS monitors the system conditions
in real-time. The following is monitored:

• Cell voltage

• Battery pack voltage

• Battery pack circuit current

• Battery pack temperature

2 38/1551-LZA 701 6011/3 Uen E | 2017-12-08

Product Overview

The BMS also controls solid state relays to protect the system from over-
charging, over-discharging, over-current, over-temperature, and other fault
operations.

2.3 Warranty Seal

The unit is equipped with a warranty seal sticker.

Note: Seals implemented by Ericsson must not be broken or removed, as it

otherwise voids warranty.

3.2 Installation Recommendations

The battery unit can be installed in a 19-inch standard rack, suitable for the
battery unit weight.

Mounting screws, 4 × M6, are not included in the accessory kit and must be
ordered separately.

3.3 Space Requirements

The battery units require no space between each other when installed in a
multiple configuration.

3.4 Environmental Characteristics

The battery unit environment must be clean, dry, and ventilated, with no
conductive dust or corrosive gas. The environmental requirements are shown
in Table 2.

Table 2 Environmental Requirements

Parameter Value Comment
Operating environment +5 to +50ºC Recommended
temperature temperature 25ºC.
Storage temperature -20 to +50ºC Recommended
temperature 25ºC.
Relative humidity 0–95% No condensation.
Altitude ≤ 3000 m On higher altitudes the
power use must be
reduced.

3.5 Indoor Equipment

The operating environment for indoor equipment must be a temperature-
controlled enclosed location suitable for sensitive data and telecommunication
equipment, with very low levels of airborne particles.

The operating environment must comply with the following standards:

• IEC 60721-3-3 classes 3K3/3Z2/3Z4/3B1/3C2(3C1)/3S2/3M2, and

• ETSI EN 300 019-1-3 Class 3.1 except for the main unit operation
temperature.

An appropriate installation location must have an adequate air conditioning

system that provides the installation locations with the following:

38/1551-LZA 701 6011/3 Uen E | 2017-12-08 5

Battery Unit Description

• Controlled level of particles in the air, according to Table 3.

• Controlled air temperature, according to information found in the

Description documents of the respective products.

• Controlled air humidity, according to information found in the Description

documents of the respective products.

Table 3 Air Particle Limitations

Particles Maximum Value Unit
Salt Mist 0 cm3/m3
Sand 30 mg/m3
Dust (Suspension) 0.5 mg/m3
Dust (Sedimentation) 1.5 mg/m2h

3.5.1 Operating Environment

This section describes operating environment parameters for equipment
operation.

There are three operating environments for the equipment: normal,

exceptional, and non-destructive.

• Normal: Under normal conditions, all units function as specified.

• Exceptional: Under an exceptional environmental stress outside of normal

operating limits, all units continue to function but with reduced
performance or capacity. When conditions return to normal, the systems
resume "Normal operation" status.

• Non-destructive: Under a non-destructive environmental stress beyond

exceptional limits, no equipment function is guaranteed, and performance
may degrade in an unspecified manner. However, the equipment still
fulfills legal requirements and does not become hazardous to people.
When conditions return to normal, no on-site intervention is needed to
restore full performance.

For information about the operating environment for the equipment, refer to
the Description documents of the respective products.

3.6 Discharging Mode

The maximum discharging capacity differs significantly at different
temperatures.

6 38/1551-LZA 701 6011/3 Uen E | 2017-12-08

Technical Data

To protect the safety and life of the battery unit, the BMS monitors the state of
discharging in real time. When the continuous discharging current exceeds the
maximum value, the BMS automatically disconnects the discharging circuit.

7.1 BMS Functions

The BMS monitors and controls battery functions to ensure that the battery
unit operates in a safe, reliable, and efficient way.

The BMS generates alarms if abnormal conditions occur during system

operation.

The basic functions of the BMS are described in Table 19.

8 Maintenance

This section describes general maintenance of the battery unit.

8.1 Preventive Maintenance

If possible, keep the operating ambient environment temperature between +20
and +45°C.

If the battery unit is stored for a longer period of time, it must be charged
regularly to 30% SOC.

Before cleaning the battery unit, the power must be switched off and the
battery unit must be in power-off state. Do not rinse the battery unit with water.

To clean the battery unit, use a dry cloth, vacuum cleaning, or compressed air.

8.2 EOL Management

The battery unit is designed for 15 years service life in standard operation.

Transportation and Storage

9 Transportation and Storage

This section describes the transportation and storage aspects of the battery
unit. For detailed information regarding transportation and storage of Li-ion
batteries, refer to Battery Guidelines.

Because of the characteristics of the battery unit, the environmental conditions

during transportation and storage must be met, to keep the performance of the
battery unit.

Keep the battery unit away from water and condensation. Liquid entering the
battery unit can cause short circuits, electricity leakage, and connector
corrosion. Moist air entering the battery unit must be avoided. If the battery
unit is exposed to water or condensation, it must be considered faulty and is
not to be used.

9.1 Transportation Information

The classifications and requirements regarding transportation are as follows:

• The battery unit is classified as Dangerous Goods for transport according

to the UN Model regulation for the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

• The battery unit is classified under CLASS 9, Dangerous Goods because

of their dual hazard properties associated with their chemical and
electrical content.

• The battery unit is shipped from the supplier not more charged than 30%
SOC.
