CHAPTER – 7 GRAVITATION
SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (2 OR 3 MARKS EACH)
1. Express law of gravitation in vector form. What are its implications?
2. State Newton’s shell theorem for the gravitational force.
3. The mean orbital radius of the earth around the sun is 1.5 ×1 08 km. Calculate the mass of the
sun if G ¿ 6.67 ×1 0−11 Nm2 kg−2 .
4. Write expressions for the gravitational force exerted by the earth on a point mass m located
above on the surface of the earth.
5. Write expressions for the gravitational force exerted by the earth on a point mass m located
below on the surface of the earth.
6. Compare the gravitational acceleration of the earth due to attraction of the sun with that due
to attraction of the moon. Given that mass of sun, M s=1.99 × 1030 kg mass of moon,
22 11
M m=7.35 ×10 kg, distance of sun from earth, r es =1.49 ×1 0 m and distance of moon from
earth r em = ¿ 3.84 × 10 8 m .
7. A man can iump1.5 m high on the earth. Calculate the approximate height he might be able
to jump on a planet whose density is one‐quarter that of the earth and whose radius is one‐
third of the earth’s radius.
8. A body hanging from a spring stretches it by 1 an at the earth's surface. How much will the
same body stretch the spring at a place 1600 km above the earth's surface? Radius of the
earth = 6400 km.
9. At what height above the earth’s surface, the value of g is half of its value on earth’s surface?
Given its radius is 6400 km.
10. How much below the surface of the earth does the acceleration due to gravity become 1%
of its value at the earth's surface? Radius of the earth = 6400 km.
11. Derive an expression for the gravitational potential energy of a body of m located at distance
r form the centre of the earth.
12. Three mass points each of mass m. are placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of
side l. What is the gravitational field and potential due to three masses at the centroid of the
triangle ?
13. Determine the escape velocity of a body from the moon. Take the moon to be a uniform
sphere of radius 1.76 × 106 m, and mass 7.36 × 1022 kg.
