Topic: Linear
Transformation

Note: Following are the problems which are required to be done by the students for an
overall understanding of the topics.

Que 1. Is there a linear transformation T : R 3 → R 2 such that T (1, − 1, 1) = (1, 0) and

T (1,1, 1) = (0, 1) ? Justify your answer.
Que 2. Show that the mapping T : R 2 → R 2 defined by T ( x1 , x2 ) = (1 + x1 , x2 ) is not a
linear transformation.
Que 3. State and prove fundamental theorem of homomorphism of vector space.
Que 4. Let V be finite dimensional vector space. Show that a linear transformation
T : V → V is one to one if and only if T is onto.
Que 5. Give an example of a linear transformation T such that Range T = Ker T .
Que 6. Show that the mapping T : R 2 → R 3 defined by T ( x, y) = ( x + y, x − y, y) is a
linear transformation. Find Range T and Ker T .
Que 7. Find the range, rank, kernel and nullity of the linear transformation T : R 4 → R 3
defined by T ( x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) = ( x1 − x4 , x2 + x3 , x 3 − x4 ) .
Que 8. If V and W are two vector spaces over F of dimensions m and n , respectively;
then show that Hom (V ,W ) is a vector space over F of dimension m n .
