7. Write the applications of F test and ψ (chi- square) test
8. Define F variance.

PART B

Large sample test (Z statistic)

1. The mean breaking strength of the cables supplied by a manufacturer is 1800 with an SD of 100.By a new
technique in the manufacturing process, it is claimed that the breaking strength of the cable has increased. To
test this claim a sample of 50 cables is tested and it is found that the mean breaking strength is 1850.can we
support the claim at 1 % level of significance?

2. A simple sample of height of 6400 Englishmen has mean of 170cm and an SD of 6.4 cm, while a simple
sample of heights of 1600 Americans has a mean of 172cm and an SD of 6.3 cm .Do the data indicate that
Americans are on the average taller than the Englishmen?

3. A sample of 900 members has a mean of 3.4 cm and SD 2.61 cm.Is the sample from a large population of
mean3.25cm and SD 2.61cms?
Small Sample test(Student’s t test Problems)
1. A machinist is making engine parts with axle diameters of 0.700 inch. A random sample of 10 parts
shows a mean diameter of 0.742 inch with a S.D. of 0.040 inch. Compute the statistic you would use to
test whether the work is meeting the specification.

2. The mean lifetime of an sample of 25 blubs is found as 1550 hours with a S.D of 120 hours. The
company manufacturing the bulbs claims that the average life of their bulbs is 1600 hours. Is the claim
acceptable at 5% level of significance?.

3. A machine is designed to produce insulating washers for electrical devicesof average thickness of 0.025
cm. A random sample of 10 washers was found to have a thickness of 0.024 cm with a S.D of 0.002cm.
Test the significance of the deviation. Value of t for 9 degrees of freedom is 2.262 at 5% level of
significance.
4. A random sample of 10 boys had the following I.Q’s 70, 120,110, 101,88,83, 95,98,107,100. Do these
data support the assumption of a population mean I.Q. of 100?

5. The nine items of a sample had the following values 45,47,50,52,48,47,49,53,51. Does the mean of the
nine items differ significantly from the assumed population mean 47.5.

6. Samples of two types of electric light bulbs were tested for length of life and the following data were
obtained

TypeI TypeII
Sample number n1=8 n2=7
Sample means 1234 hrs 1036 hrs
Sample S.D 36 hrs 40 hrs

Is the difference in the means sufficient to warrant that type I is superior to type II regarding length of
life.
7. The average numbers of articles produced by two machines per day are 200 and 250 with standard
deviations 20 and 25 respectively on the basis of records of 25 days production. Can you regard both
machines equally efficient at 1% LOS.

8.The following are the average weekly losses of working hours due to accidents in 10 industrial plants before

and after an introduction of a safety program was put into operation

Befor 45 73 46 124 33 57 83 34 26 17
e
After 36 60 44 119 35 51 77 29 24 11

Use to 0.05 level of significance to test whether the safety program is effective.

9. Below are given the gain in weights(in lbs) of pigs fed on two diets A and B.

Diet A 25 32 30 34 24 14 32 24 30 31 35 25 - - -
Diet B 44 34 22 10 47 31 40 30 32 35 18 21 35 29 22

Test if the two diets differ significantly as regards their effect on increase in weight.

F Test

10. Two independent samples of sizes 9 and 7 from a normal population had the following values of the variables.

Sample I: 18 13 12 15 12 14 16 14 15
Sample II: 16 19 13 16 18 13 15
Do the estimates of the population variance
differ significantly at 5% level?.

11. In one sample of 10 observations , the sum of the squares of the deviations of the sample values from the
sample mean was 120 and in another sample of 12 observations it was 314. Test whether this difference is
significant at 5 % level of significance.

12.A group of 10 rats fed on diet A and another group of 8 rats fed on diet B, recorded the following increase in

weight .
Diet A: 5 6 8 1 12 4 3 9 6 10
Diet B: 2 3 6 8 10 1 2 8

Chi- Square Test

following data.
Extravagant father Miserly father

Calculate ψ and discuss the effect of vaccine in controlling susceptibility to tuberculosis.

15. Two researchers adopted different sampling techniques while investigating the same group of students to
find the number of students falling into different intelligence level. The results are as follows.

Researchers Below Average Average Above Average Geniu Total

s
X 86 60 44 10 200
Y 40 33 25 2 100
