CHAPTER 2

1. Definition of Scientific Research

- To investigate a research problem systematically, carefully and thoroughly.
- Researchers have to follow a sequence of step from formulating the research
problem to publish the results.

2. Procedures of Scientific Research (6)

- Select a research problem
- Apply a theory to derive the hypothesis about the problem
- Test hypothesis
- If hypothesis fail- modify/reject
- If hypothesis pass- provisionally accept it
- Test hypothesis in a new context

3. Research Step (4)

i. Planning for research:
-Brainstorm idea and get possible sources of information
-Narrow the topic so that it is manageable
-Plan how we are going to do the research

ii. Accessing the resources

-Decide what source of information will be the best and find them
-Locate the information that might be helpful in answering our research question

iii. Proccessing the information

-Look carefully the information of the sources and decide which is important and -
take note
-Organize the information, make sense to it and develop our own idea

iv. Transferring our learning

-Transmit our idea and information collected to other people by present our
finding and solution.

4. Definition of research design

- Overall strategy that outlines how a research study will be conducted
It serves as a blueprint for the entire research process, guide researchers in
collection, analyzing and interpreting data to address their research question

Categorized into 3 categorize: exploratory research, descriptive research and

causal research
5. Stage of Economic Research (7)
Formulate research problem: Research begin with a question/ problem. From a
general idea, we must decide more specifically what we want to know and the
purpose. The best idea on how to refine the problem is from literature review.

Prepare Research Design: Develop a overall framework for the research. Researcher
must anticipate about what sort of observation are needed to solve the problem, what
strategy is appropriate to obtain the observation and how to analyze the data.
Anticipate these problem will help to prevent serious mistake in a study.

Measurement: Devising operations that will link to specific concept to empirical

observable events

Sampling: Determine how many units should be selected and how to choose them

Data Collection: Obtain the observation for the research

Process Data: Data obtain must transformed for analysis to be carried out

Data analysis and interpretation: Processed data must be manipulated further so that
their meaning and implications to problem and hypotheses can be extracted. After
that, we can draw conclusion about the theory and hypotheses and asses the practical
implication of the finding. Report the result.

6. Process of identify the researchable issue

- Choose a topic to research
Select a general topic that interest you, list key word to help u look for
information about the topic and get an overview about the topic.
- Frame the research question
- Design the project

7. Criteria of choosing a topic (5)

- Interest and relevance : Choose a topic that interest you so that we can sustain
our motivation and commitment to complete the project. The topic should also
interest to the scientific community or policy makers.
- Durability: Choose a topic that can complete within a year time
- Breadth of research question: Is the topic too broad or too narrow? Is the topic
sufficient for the time frame provided?
- Access: The topic should be able to access to database
- Resources: Sufficient literature must be available on the topic so that a critical
literature review can be carried out

8. Stage to choose topic (6)

- identify broad topic and academic discipline
- Determine the scope
- Brainstorm issues and question
- Map and structure the issues
- Conduct a reconnaissance- discuss with others about the topic and get advice
- Frame our research question

9. Attributes of good research topic

- Relevance: A good research topic should be relevant to the field of study and
address current issues or gaps in knowledge, or emerging trends.
- originality: An original research topic explores new ideas, perspectives, or
approaches within the field. It should offer a fresh angle that hasn't been
extensively explored before.
- Significance: The topic should have significance and potential impact within the
academic community and beyond.
- Feasibility: A good research topic should be feasible within the constraints of
time, resources, and access to data or participants. It should be realistically
achievable given the researcher's capabilities and limitations.
- Interest: The topic should be of interest to the researcher, motivating them to
explore it in depth and invest time and effort into the research process.

10. Definition of research proposal

-an exercise in persuasion where we seek to convince our audience so that we can
complete a meaningful and interesting research on the selected topic

11. Components of research proposal

- Statement of the nature of the problem
- The research question
- Literature Survey
- Research Design
- References

12. Requirement for a Good Research

- A good research question
- A Testable hypothesis
- A good data set
- An empirical methodology that adequately test the hypothesis
- Correctly interpretation of empirical result
