PERSONAL STATEMENT

I chose to pursue a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a
focus on Network Engineering because of an intense desire to constantly broaden my
knowledge, and an enthusiasm to solve some of the challenges facing the networking industry.
There is an unmet demand for reliable infrastructure to cope with the rapid growth of artificial
intelligence (AI) and 5G technology. Additionally, research has shown that telecommunication
companies contribute some of the biggest volumes of energy consumption in the world. My
desire to solve these challenges guided my research interests toward improving and creating
more efficient methods of wireless power transfer.

I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering with a focus on

Telecommunication during which I discovered my aptitude for the creation of secure and efficient
fault-tolerant networks for the propagation of data through wireless power transfer technologies.
This greatly informed the choice of my undergraduate Honors project on the Design,
Construction, and Implementation of a Wireless Charging Platform for Charging Mobile Phones
Using the Inductive Technique of Wireless Power Transfer, which I completed under the expert
guidance of Engr. Dr. Alagbu Ekene and Engr. Dr. Ogwugwum Ezeagwu. I successfully
developed a coupling system that could wirelessly transmit enough power to recharge mobile
phones within a distance of 1.5cm. Furthermore, I implemented a fault-tolerant power supply for
the system, to prevent power failure using three power sources - mains 230V/50Hz stepped
down to 5V and rectified to DC, a 130W monocrystalline solar panel, and a deep cycle battery.
This innovation was particularly advantageous given the persistent issue of power outages in
my country. This project allowed me to cultivate my academic research and writing skills, refine
my project management capabilities, and develop the crucial ability to work independently while
adhering to strict time constraints. These competencies, I believe, are essential for my journey
toward a Master's degree.

To underscore my independent learning abilities, I have completed certified online courses like
CCNA (Routing and Switching) and Cyber Operations by Cisco. My strong foundation in
network fundamentals, electronics, and programming has been complemented by practical skills
gained through internships. In my fourth year, I self-learned Python, JavaScript, HTML, and
CSS, and mastered Cisco Packet Tracer, which helped me secure a competitive internship at
Airtel, a major Nigerian telecommunications company.

During my internship, under the supervision of a Huawei-certified field maintenance engineer, I

was entrusted with critical responsibilities related to cellular base station maintenance practices.
These responsibilities included network monitoring, antenna realignments, and cabling.
Furthermore, I actively participated in projects aimed at optimizing existing base station
technologies, particularly the transition from 3G to 4G technology in rural areas of Nigeria.

Notably, I was involved in addressing an incident that resulted in a communication failure due to
the misalignment of point-to-point microwave antennas. With my team, which included riggers,
we successfully realigned the antennas using the MINI-LINK Craft software, thus restoring
communication in the affected area. However, the Airtel outage showcased the vital role of
effective communication and fueled my passion for networking and learning more in this field.
After my undergraduate studies, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, co-founding a tech
startup “swizel.co”, focused on internetworking within the educational sector, in my active role
within the management and tech development team, I have played a pivotal part in creating
AIdriven software solutions aimed at digitalizing manual processes and enhancing operational
efficiency, particularly within the educational sector.

Simultaneously, I have also, devoted a significant portion of my time to working as an ICT

teacher and an instructor in a coding club. In these capacities, I impart essential skills such as
Python, HTML, and CSS to students in two distinct educational institutions. This multifaceted
experience has further solidified my dedication to the convergence of education and technology,
strengthening my commitment to fostering digital literacy and technological empowerment
among the younger generation.

My decision to pursue a Master's degree at this juncture is driven by my desire to expand my

knowledge base within my chosen area of specialization and to advance my career as a
network engineer. I firmly believe that my educational and professional background has
equipped me with the requisite foundation to excel in this demanding phase of my academic
and professional journey.

The University of Kansas stands out as my first choice of academic institution due to several
compelling reasons. The university boasts world-class facilities, a cadre of experienced faculty
members, and generous funding opportunities that support multidisciplinary research and
innovation. I am particularly excited about the prospect of witnessing the practical application of
my work in solving real-life challenges on a grand scale. Furthermore, I am eager to engage
with fellow students and industry professionals, with the hope that my expertise in wireless
power transfer techniques and network analysis can contribute positively to their ongoing
research endeavors.

Most significantly, I am excited about the opportunity to work under the mentorship of renowned
experts in my chosen field, such as Professor Frost, Professor Hashemi, or Professor Keshmiri.
I am particularly interested in Professor Hashemi’s pioneering work in utilizing unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs) for precise cellular network performance data collection in rural regions. This
work has left me profoundly inspired. I am keenly interested in being supervised by Professor
Hashemi and securing a place within his research group. Additionally, I would be honored to be
considered for a Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantship under his guidance, as well as
other funding opportunities.

In conclusion, I believe my skills in wireless power transfer techniques, and network analysis, as
well as my problem-solving abilities, should underscore my potential to successfully undertake a
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Kansas. I
eagerly anticipate the opportunity to learn from the university's outstanding peer network and
esteemed research professionals. Furthermore, I am committed to contributing to the success of
research at the institution while enhancing my own academic and professional journey.
