Dame Fanny Waterman and Marion Harewood were joint founders of the Leeds International Piano Competition. They also joined together to
write the piano tutor Piano Lessons, which this piece comes from.
In this piece, we need to imagine that the swans are played by the left hand and the ducks by the right hand. Waterman and Harewood say:
‘The swans are gliding gracefully across the water; play the left-hand melody as smoothly as possible. The ducks are quacking busily; play the
right-hand chords with a pecking sound.’
