CHAPTER-I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
NIC ASIA Bank has its antecedents in NIC Bank which was established on 21st July 1998. The
Bank was rechristened as NIC ASIA Bank after the merger of NIC Bank with Bank of Asia
Nepal on 30th June 2013. This was a historic merger in the annals of Nepalese financial
landscape as the first of its kind merger between two successful commercial banks in the
country. Today, NIC ASIA has established itself as one of the most successful commercial bank
in Nepal.
During the post-merger integration phase, NIC ASIA managed the transition very smoothly
receiving accolades from the regulators as well as the stakeholders, paving the way for other
mergers and consolidation in the Nepalese financial sector. After the merger, NIC ASIA was
recognized as “Bank of the Year 2013-Nepal” by The Banker, Financial Times, UK. This is the
second time that the Bank was recognized with this prestigious award, the previous occasion
being in 2007.
NIC ASIA Bank is now, one of the largest private sector commercial banks in the country in
terms of capital base, balance-sheet size, number of branches, ATM network and customer base.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study are as follows:
 To find out total composition of total deposit.
 To find saving deposit to total deposit.
 To compare of fixed deposit with total deposit.
 To study utilization of the deposit of NIC Asia Bank.

1.4 Rationale
The main rationale of the study is to highlight the investment policies of commercial banks with
the expectation that the study can bring the gap between deposit and investment. On the other
hand, the study would provide information to management of the bank that would help them to
take collective action.
In the context of Nepal, there is less availability of research works, journals and articles in
investment policy of commercial banks as well as other financial institution. As it is well known
that success and prosperity of the bank heavily relies upon the successful investment of collected
resources to the important sector of the economy. Successful formulation and effective
implementation of investment policy is the prime requisite for the successful performance of
commercial banks.
1.5 Literature Review
The saving deposit has played a vital role in developing banking sector and other organizations.
It is the main income sources for banks. This study tries to describe the features of bank.
However, this study also consider the interest rate, bonus incentives, promotional interest rate,
minimum
2
opening deposit, monthly deposit requirements, etc. like economic variable that support the
investment decisions.
1.5.1 Conceptual Review
Conceptual review of various different literature provided by different authors, research scholars,
practitioners, etc. have been presented in the following sections:
1.5.1.1 Saving Deposit
A saving account is an interest bearing account. In NIC Asia Bank, interest is calculated on three
month basis and credited to the account on quarterly basis. The minimum balance for saving
account depends on the nature of saving account. Such balance is subject to any incidental
charges that the bank specifies during the period. The types of saving account in NIC Asia Bank
are:
 General Saving
 Nari Bachat
 Share Khata
 Jestha Bachat
 Bal Bachat
 Lok Bachat
 Corporate Staff Saving
 Bachat Yojana
 Student Saving
1.5.1.2 Factors Affecting Saving Deposit
a) The Level of the Real Interest Rate
In any attempt to identify the factors behind a higher or lower rate of saving, the first possibility
to be considered will undoubtedly be the interest rate, which is the remuneration for saving.
Empirical finding obtained in practice do not point to a significant between the interest rate and
saving.
b) Fiscal Policy
According to the economic theory known as the Ricardian Equivalence, a decline in public
savings will be offset by a rise in private savings. In other words, a growth in public
consumption (or from the longer term viewpoint, a growth in the public debt), which implies a
decrease in public saving, will cause individuals to change their saving habits and increase their
saving in order to create implies a decrease in public saving in order to create a reserve against
the future tax burden (which is like to grow).
c) The Distribution of Income
An inequality in the distribution of income, as measured by the Gini coefficient, rise during the
1990’s, due among other things, to the wave of mass immigration. The arrival of such a large
3
number of immigrants, most of whom came with few assets had the effect of increasing the
extent of inequality measured.
d) Financial Reforms
Financial reforms usually have a temporarily adverse effect on saving rates. Israel is a good
example of this phenomenon, in view of the wide-ranging (if gradually implemented) financial
reforms initiated since the 1985 stabilization program.
The most notable factor affecting savings during the initial stage of this liberalization process
was found to be the lifting of restrictions on the taking of credit. The much greater ease with
which loans can be obtained as a result of this reform measure reduces the individual’s incentive
to save.
e) Uncertainty
A situation of uncertainty whether political, economic or personal, will generally have the effect
of encouraging all economic units to increase their savings. On the other hand, uncertainty
concerning a change in the financial climate might shift savings from financial to material, such
as diamonds, real-state, etc.). Households will be afraid that their future income decreases and
hence they will display an increased tendency to save.
f) The Effects of Taxation
Tax reduce their payer’s disposable income, and thereby have the effect of reducing private
saving while increasing government revenue and savings. When the various channels of savings
are either subjected to taxation or are subsidized, another effect is apparent from the real interest
rate after tax.
In Israel, exemption from capital gain tax is granted on securities marketed on the stock
exchange, provident fund interest, saving schemes, foreign currency restitution deposits and life
insurance proceeds. Tax benefits are also provided when making an instruments.
g) Demographic Factors
One of the factor found to have a clear and significant effect on savings is the age composition of
the population. This effect can be explained by the life cycle model, whereby savings are used
for retirement and are accrued at different rates during the individual’s lifetime. Accordingly, we
can expect the saving rates to decline in proportion to the size of the elderly population who have
retired from the labor market.
1.5.1.3 Features of Saving Deposit
a) Interest Rates
The way in which your savings will grow is with a competitive interest rate. The higher the rate,
the quicker you will earn more and more pennies. With a saving account the financial institution
offers a standard variable interest rate per annum. So, be sure to take the time and find a saving
account with an impressive interest rate.
4
b) Bonus Incentives
If there’s savings account featuring a bonus interest rate then by all means take a further look. A
bond rate is offered on top of the base rate when a specific criteria is met. It often requires you to
make a minimum deposit per month along with a limited number of withdrawals. For example,
with the ANZ progress saver account you can earn a bonus 4.24% p.a. when you make at least
one single deposit of $10 or more in a month and there are no withdrawals, fees or charges
processed to the account in that same month.
c) Promotional Interest Rate
As you start your search for a new savings account you will come across plenty of banks enciting
you to sign up with them. A lot of bank in Australia offer and impressive promotional interest
rate to new account holder. This rate is usually only for a limited time before reverting to the
standard variable interest rate of the account.
d) Minimum Opening Deposit
Some financial institution requires you to make a minimum deposit before they open and activate
your saving account. This is usually to cover cost associated with setting up the new account and
then maintaining it. Having to make a minimum opening deposit may defer you away from that
saving account.
e) Monthly Deposit Requirements
This feature comes in hand with a lot of saving accounts. In order to lap up the high interest rate
on offer you are required to maintain a minimum monthly balance or deposit a certain amount
every month. If you fail to meet the requirement the bank will lower your interest rate or pay no
interest for that month. So, it’s a good idea to work out how much you can save each month and
then look for a bank that offers bonus rates for fulfilling these criteria.
f) ATM Facility
Many online saving accounts don’t come with a whole in the wall facility where you can
withdrawal money from your saving account. So, if you need to access your savings you will
need to transfer the money into your linked transaction account in order to withdraw it. Which
keep in mind takes time. If you’re likely to withdrawal money regularly from your saving
account.
1.5.2 Review of Previous Work
During the study, the previous students have carried out several thesis works. Among them some
of thesis is found to be relevant for this study which is presented as below:
Yan (1993), talks about time series behavior as well as the determinants of the changes in saving
deposit. It focus on forecasting future models for saving deposit. It focus on management aspect
also.
Bova (2015), highlight problems and solutions in deposit policy. It focus on formulating
5
appropriate deposit policy, objectives, operational structure and tools.
Gupta (2021), “Understanding saving deposits: Features, Benefits, and Risks” – this article
provides an overview of the key features, benefits, and risks associated with saving deposits in
banks. It discusses topics such as interest rate, minimum balance requirement, withdrawal
restrictions, and the importance of saving for financial goals.
Smith (2022), “Comparing saving deposits accounts: A guide for savers” – this article compares
different saving deposit accounts offered by different banks, highlighting the differences in
interest rates, minimum balance requirements, and other features. It provides insights on how to
compare and choose the best saving deposits account that aligns with your financial goals and
preferences.
Patel (2023), “How to choose the right saving deposit account” – this article offers tips and
advice on how to choose the right saving deposit account that suits your financial needs and
goals. It discusses factors such as interest rates, fees, account access, and customer service which
can impact your decision when selecting a saving deposit account.
1.6 Research Methodology
Research methodology can be understood as a science of studying how research has been done.
It looks into the research design, nature of sources of data, data collection procedure and tools
and technique of analysis for the purpose of achieving the objective of the study.
1.6.1 Research Design
This research report is based on a descriptive research design, which involves the systematic
collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to describe the features, performance, and
customer satisfaction of NIC Asia Bank’s Saving Deposit. Both primary and secondary data
sources are used for this research, including data from NIC Asia Bank’s annual reports, official
website, and other relevant publications.
1.6.2 Population and Sample
There are altogether 20 commercial banks, which are functioning all over the country. Most of
their stock are traded actively in the stock market. NIC Asia Bank has been selected in sample
for the study.
1.6.3 Types of Data
There are mainly two types of data. They are as follows:
a) Primary Data
The data which are collected for the first time by an investigator or researcher is known as
primary data. These data are original in character. These data are raw data which has high degree
of accuracy.
b) Secondary Data
6
The data which are collected already and then used by others is known as secondary data.
Generally, these types of data have low degree of accuracy compared to the primary data.
1.6.4 Data Collection Procedure
The data and information are collected from the primary and secondary sources. For the primary
information, research interview and questionnaires are used. The research interview was set to
interview bank officials. The research questionnaire was set for bank account holders who are
known as depositors in the thesis report.
For the collection of secondary data and information, annual report of NIC Asia Bank,
magazines, various publication and the internet have been used. Also, for other related
information various books and periodicals have been referred from library.
1.6.4.1 Primary and Secondary Data
Secondary Data: Secondary data for NIC Asia Bank are collected from
 Annual report of the NIC Asia Bank Ltd.
 Brochures, magazines and leaflets
 Different statement
 Files, balance sheet and various documents
 Websites of NIC Asia Bank Ltd.
1.6.5 Instruments
There should be various financial, statistical and accounting tools to achieve the objectives of the
study. The analysis of data will be done according to pattern of data available due to limited time
and resources. For this research statistical tools have been used to achieve the purpose:
 Statistical Tools
1.6.5.1 Statistical Tools
Some important statistical tools are used to analyze the data to achieve the objective of this
study. The basis statistical tools related to this study are discussed below:
i. Standard Deviation (S.D.)
The standard deviation measures the absolute dispersion. The greater the amount of dispersion
will be greater the standard deviation. A small standard deviation means a high degree of
uniformity of the observations as well as homogeneity of a series and vice-versa. The standard
deviation of different ratios can be calculated as:

where, X = Variable
X = Mean
n = no. of observation
ii. Coefficient of Variation (C.V.)
The coefficient of variation (C.V.) is the relative measure of dispersion. Comparable across
distribution which is defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean expressed in
percent. It can be compute as:
SD
CV = × 100
MEAN
1.6.6 Limitation
There are certain limitations to this research report which include:
 The study mainly concentrates on saving deposit aspects of NIC Asia Bank and may not
be applicable to other banks or financial institutions.
 Only five years data is taken for the study of saving deposit of NIC Asia Bank.
 The analysis will be mainly based on secondary data.
 This study deals with limited financial and statistical tools.
 It focuses only in saving schemes, therefore overall position of NIC Asia Bank can’t be
judged by this report.
1.7 Report Structure
The whole study has been divided into three chapters.
First Chapter includes introduction, objectives of the study, rationale, literature review,
research methodology, limitation and report structure.
Second Chapter is devoted to presentation and analysis of data through definite course of result
and finding.
Third Chapter provides summary and conclusion for improving the future performance of the
bank has also been outline.
