AND DEVELOPMENT OF OIL EXTRACTION
MACHINE
ABSTRACT

This project intends to develop a 3d printed proof of concept for oil extraction machine to extract oil
from sesame seeds, simplifying the process from manual labour. The goal is to eventually create a
fully automated version using more complex mechanisms. This will address the growing demand for
efficient processing while reducing the significant amount of time and manpower currently required.

Utilizing CAD software, an initial prototype was modeled, incorporating modularity and ease of
assembly as critical design considerations. The prototype comprises essential elements such as the
pressing chamber, screw press, and filtration system, all designed to be fabricated using widely
available 3D printing materials like PLA and ABS. Subsequent to the design phase, the components
were printed and assembled, followed by rigorous testing to evaluate the machine's efficiency in
extracting oil from sesame seed. Key performance metrics included extraction yield, operational
stability, and energy consumption. Preliminary results indicate that the 3D printed machine achieves
a satisfactory oil yield comparable to traditional methods, while significantly reducing the initial
manufacturing costs and production time.

This proof of concept underscores the potential of 3D printing technology in revolutionizing the
manufacturing of specialized machinery. It demonstrates that with precise engineering and strategic
material selection, 3D printed machines can perform reliably in practical applications. Future work
will focus on optimizing the design for enhanced durability, scalability, and integration of advanced

they hope to streamline the cutting process, improve productivity, and

ensure consistency in nut size and quality.

1.1 PROBLEMDEFINITION:

The traditional manual process of cutting areca nuts poses several

significant challenges that hinder productivity, consistency, and overall
efficiency. One of the primary issues is the slow pace of operation, which
substantially limits the throughput and overall output. Manual cutting is a
labor-intensive and time-consuming task, often leading to fatigue and
decreased productivity over extended periods.

1.2 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS:

The automated Arica nut cutter project holds significance in enhancing

agricultural processing efficiency. By transitioning from a limited manual
prototype to an automated system, it aims to boost productivity, ensure
consistent nut quality, streamline operations, reduce labor demands, and
potentially increase profitability for producers. Successfully implementing
this innovative technology could drive advancements across the
agricultural industry, promoting sustainability and efficiency in food
production.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

The primary objective of this project is to design and develop a semi-

automatic machine for cutting areca nuts efficiently and effectively. The
machine should be capable of accommodating different sizes of areca nuts,
ensuring versatility and adaptability to varying requirements. Furthermore,
the machine should prioritize user-friendliness and ease of operation,
making it accessible to a wide range of users.

2
1.4 STRUCTURE OF THE REPORT:

The project aims to design and develop an automated Arica nut cutter to enhance
efficiency over the existing manual prototype. It involves system design, integrating
mechanical and automation components, fabrication, and rigorous testing. Results will

1.1 :LITE-DUTY MOTOR

This high-speed sewing machine motor packs a punch despite its

small size. At 75 watts, it offers enough power for various
sewing tasks. Compatible with both 220 and 230 volts, it
delivers a maximum speed of 7200 rotations per minute. With a
current draw of only 0.5 amps, it's energy-efficient, and its 1/12
horsepower rating makes it perfect for light-duty sewing projects.

1.2 MILD-STEEL:

In the realm of areca nut shell cutters, mild steel reigns supreme as the
material of choice. The mild steel plays the crucial role in manufacture
of the areca nutshell cutter, the reason to use a is because mild steel has a
good balance of strength and ductility, making it able to withstand the
force required to crack through the hard shell of an areca nut without
bending or breaking easily..Mild steel is relatively easy to shape and
machine, allowing for the creation of a sharp and precise cutting
edge..Mild steel is a common and inexpensive material, making it a cost-
effective choice for the manufacturer.

1.3 STAINLESS-STEEL AS A CUTTER:

Stainless steel emerges as the ideal material for areca nut shell cutters due to its
exceptional properties. Its corrosion-resistant nature ensures longevity, even in humid
environments or when exposed to moisture, safeguarding the cutter from rust and
deterioration. Certain grades of stainless steel boast remarkable edge retention,
enabling precise and efficient cutting while maintaining sharpness over extended
periods. The harder and stronger composition of stainless steel allows the blades to
withstand the demanding task of slicing through the tough and fibrous areca nut shells
without succumbing to excessive wear. Moreover, the non-porous surface of stainless
steel facilitates easy cleaning and maintenance, ensuring optimal hygiene – a crucial
factor in food processing applications. The durability and versatility of stainless steel
cutters contribute to their cost-effectiveness, as they can be honed and sharpened
repeatedly, extending their functional lifespan.

1.4 WARM WHEEL AND WARM:

In the realm of areca nut shell crackers, the worm wheel, also known as a worm gear,
takes center stage as the unsung hero of power transmission. Imagine a screw-like
shaft, the worm, working in perfect harmony with a circular gear, the worm wheel.
This dynamic duo is designed to conquer challenges where two shafts meet at right
angles, never quite parallel and never quite intersecting. This ingenious setup
efficiently transfers rotational force from the motor, the driving force behind the
operation, all the way to the cutting blades or discs that crack open the areca nut
shells. But the worm wheel's talents extend even further. It acts as a torque multiplier,
a crucial feature for an areca nut cracker where immense force is needed to break
through those tough shells. And to top it all off, the worm wheel arrangement is
remarkably compact, saving precious space in the design of these nut-cracking
machines.

1.5 MILD-STEEL ROD:

Mild steel offers a good balance of strength and ductility. It can withstand the forces
applied while cranking the cutter without bending or breaking easily. This ensures the
crank can handle repeated use over time. Mild steel is relatively easy to shape and
machine. This allows manufacturers to create cranks with the specific design and
dimensions needed for the cutter. Mild steel is an affordable material, making it a
cost-conscious choice for manufacturers. This translates to a more accessible price
point for consumers.Mild steel offers a good balance between weight and
functionality. It's strong enough for the task without adding unnecessary weight to the
cutter, making it easier to operate.

The literature review surrounding encompasses the wide range of

researches, articles, case studies and technical reports hightlightening their
design,implementation,applications and impact

1.Design and optimization of operating parameters for areca nut de-husker

The exisiting machines developed are not so capable to completely remove the outer
layer of the areca nut due to the difference in the size of the area nut, and the areca nuts
damaged due to the non-availability of the optimal process parameters, and they are
expensive. Damaged areca nuts have lesser value in the market. This paper deals with
the design and development of an areca nut de-husking machine which can de-husk
areca nuts of different sizes without damaging it. The flow of paper starts with the
definition of the problem, relevant need analysis, field survey, and literature survey
based on these data areca nut de-husking machine designed. Finally, the factor effect
study using the Design of Experiment (DOE) method is presented in this paper.

2.Design and fabrication of environmental friendly areca nut collecting and

bagging agri -machine.
Agriculture is now one of the most important sectors in the Indian economy. Areca nut
Cultivation is one of the major livelihoods of farmers of Kerala and Karnataka. Labour
Problems in every sector is leading to mechanization of processes. Agricultural sector is also
facing such problem due to which most of the farmers tend to give up the practice. In order to
further develop this sector technology has become one of the main components. Typically,
dealing with the agriculture sector can entail difficulties relating to a number of factors.
Consequently, to overcome such problems, farmers are being encouraged to adopt technology
that suits their farm. Research has to be conducted for Areca nut collecting and bagging
machine technology to understand more about the current scenario. To overcome the
problems of an existing concepts like motorized, engine, solar and pedal operated the
proposed design is best suitable for collecting and bagging the areca nut from ground to gunny
bag. Areca nut cultivation is a long process involving harvesting, moving the areca nut to
ground, separating the fruits from bunches, drying, bagging, de-husking, separating. Several
9
machines are being developed to help farmers to aid the aforementioned processes. Areca nut
collecting and bagging machine is a new one among them. The machine is intended to collect
areca nuts from ground directly to gunny bags fixed in a moveable trolley. After the bag is
filled the trolley can also used to move the bags to store rooms. The machine is operated by a
person so that farmer alone himself can use it. In addition, it can be used anytime. Another
advantage of this machine is that after loading/filling the areca nut from ground to gunny bag
And also weight indication is provided to check the weight. Since the machine is manually
driven, the machine is ergonomically designed to reduce the user effort. The major enabling
mechanism in the machine is rotary gear mechanism that pulls the areca nuts from ground. A
belt driven Conveyer carries the collected areca nuts up into the bags.

3. Design and Construction of a Cutting Machines for Fresh Betel Nut

Indonesia is one of the largest producers of areca nut as agricultural products after
India. However, agricultural technology (machinery and equipment) to carry out
postharvest handling is always left behind by other countries. One of the postharvest
handlers is to cut the fresh betel nut (FBN) with the aim that the postharvest handling
process (drying, packaging, and transportation) can be carried out better. Therefore,
this paper aims to design, construction and test simply from a FBN cutting machine.
The machine uses a static circular blade. Some physical properties of FBN are
measured to support the design of the machine. The main parts of the machine are
shaft, transmission unit, engine, carrier part, and circular blade. The power
requirements are calculated through an approach before construction. The test results
of work capacity performance will be compared between the quality of cutting nuts
manually with cutting machine. The results of machine performances indicate that the
machine capacity, machine efficiency, and work efficiency are 16.43 1.16 kg hr -1 ,
31.40 2.22%, and 68.72 16.29% respectively.
